What Google Can Potentially Do With Your Privacy To Add Another Billion $

With all those data point from the plethora of free Google products that website owners and users surround themselves with, we can only imagine what kind of ad targeting platform can be made but Google can actually make it.

Imagine if you had to make a sales pitch to that jack-ass manager from the rich company who never bothers to reply your mails but you could run a $5 ad campaign that targets only him. So that you can show your brand to him everywhere he goes, from his Gmail account to web searches or even when he is on this blog you could shout out “Hey Jack Ass manager -reply to my mails”.

Or it could have helped you target the crush of your life to be your valentine by throwing your name on every site that she visited. Yes that is what Google’s ad platform could help you do. Help you do right now, if only it wanted to.

Zoom out a little and say if the new Groupon clone could target ads to only SnapDeal users and say “Hey, We got better deals”. Sounds familiar? Haven’t you done that already on Facebook? Did you not target your Facebok ads to all those who “Like” your competitor?

Google does allow you to target your ads to show on pluggd.in but why not target the ads to show it to Pluggd.in readers where ever they go? Why not on your demography, why only context? Wouldn’t it perform like it does now?

Google ads have always been contextual and little about demography. When i am searching about a fridge doesn’t mean that i don’t have the house that i want to buy at the back of my mind. I am more likely to be influenced with this because i know it is not being pushed to me, and would help build the advertisers brand with me overtime. It may not have a high CTR but the brand message is conveyed.

Even with its strong hold on online advertising, what Google hasn’t been able to achieve is a mindshare of brand managers who want to build their brand and spend most of their ad budgets in “branding”. Google isn’t yet considered a branding or engagement platform but that is where most of advertising $ goes. Brand managers would love to embrace such a targeting platform even if they had to pay per impression and not per click.

So is it Evil to do that? Does it dis-respect your privacy?

Take another case of Google’s almost dying social network, Orkut. Google never released the data of Orkut users on Google search. Imagine the if your Orkut data was searchable by your potential employer on Google, wouldn’t you keep it clean. Wouldn’t Orkut still be a top of the mind recall when we looked for anyone?

Are the web users going to reward Google to maintain their privacy? Or is Google waiting for Facebook to take step 2 in killing privacy before it takes step 1?

Your take? Do you really believe there is anything private about the web anymore?

Media Monitors acquires Singapore’s Brandtology, heats up crowded brand monitoring space

Media Monitors, a media intelligence group headquartered in Australia, announced today the acquisition of a majority stake in Singapore-based brand monitoring company, Brandtology, for an undisclosed sum.

Launched in 2008, Brandtology has 170 analysts in 15 countries across Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. Brandtology provides brand monitoring services to clients using a mix of technology solutions and trained social media analysts. Brandtology also provides multilingual services to clients, covering 12 languages. In April 2009, Walden International invested SGD2 million in the company.

Eddie Chau, Brandtology’s chief executive, said in the press release, “This is the logical and exciting next step for Brandtology, allowing us to continue our rapid growth across existing and new markets and maintain our focus on research and development with the financial strength and broad APAC sales network of the region’s leading media intelligence company behind us.”

Brandtology will remain a separate brand within the Media Monitors Group.

John Croll, Media Monitors CEO, said, “This is Media Monitors first acquisition since being acquired by Quadrant on 1 July 2010 and it reaffirms our growth strategy. This will create significant opportunities for cross-selling across all markets, and Brandtology’s strong presence in China in particular supports our strategic growth story in that market.”

The brand monitoring space is relatively crowded in Singapore, with local companies like Jamiq and Thoughtbuzz competing with Brandtology.

Facebook Brings Places To Singapore

Facebook logoFacebook finally brings Facebook Places to Singapore. Facebook Places allows you to “check-in” and share with your friends where you are and who you’re with, find friends who are nearby and discover new places your friends like – all in real time.

Places has been available elsewhere: in the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

About Places

“Facebook Places is available to users in Singapore with mobile access to the Facebook application for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, HP webOS, and Windows Phone 7, or to touch.facebook.com. When you use Places, you’ll be able to see if any of your friends are currently checked in nearby and connect with them easily. You can also check into nearby Places to tell your friends where you are, tag your friends in the Places you visit together, and view comments your friends have made about the Places you visit.

With Places, users are in control of what they share and with whom they share. They choose whether or not to share their location when they check in at a place, and only friends can see when they do, unless users choose to set their privacy setting otherwise. When users check in, they can tag friends who are with them but only if their settings allow it. When they are tagged, they are always notified.”

Google Streetview Vs. Traffic In Delhi [Cost goes up!]

I was driving down Greater Kailash area (GK – I, Delhi) last week and got to capture this: A Google Street View car struggling out of the traffic in Delhi. Well, nay, let me rephrase that – struggling through the battle of traffic in Delhi.

It is not a far cry to assume that the traffic conditions in Delhi are among the worst in the world, and yet believe me or not Delhi does sit on the top of the pyramid w.r.t.  technology provisions as compared to other Indian cities. Now ain’t that a bitch?

Some infrastructure work during Common Wealth event did Delhi good, but even today one can see there are billboards, posters and sign boards spread across the city claiming – Commonwealth Sports, 2010! This potentially creates confusion for the new visitors/tourists into the city.

What makes me wonder is how much these traffic woes can raise the cost for Google Street View project. And say after completion of project – i.e. after tracing all the streets of Delhi, what percentage of our screen will show as streets, and what percentage as vehicles? :-)

Any clues?
