What New iPad2 Case Reminds Japanese – Bath Tub Lid

iPad2 case and Japanese bath tag lid

Apple’s new iPad2 announcement was followed by a lot of coverage. A funny thing happened in Japanese web was about their newly-introduced official option – case.

Japanese bath tub lid is common item in Japanese home. The reason is that in Japan, family members share the same hot water (sounds dirty? Japanese wash their body outside of tub first, and bathing is thought as kind of lustral thing) so this lid is used to keep the water warm for the next person when you are done.

The design of the case looks so similar with one of the common type of Japanese bath tab lid, so it was so fast that this image was made.

The text in the image, “Kanzen-ni Icchi” means “Completely Identical”, which is a popular web meme often used to tell when two person’s faces are so similar, when plagiarized manga/illustration is identified and shown overlapped on the original, etc.

Steply: A HK-made Photo Sharing App Attracts iPhone Users, Especially In Asia

Last August, I was invited to attend Startup Saturday, a Hong Kong’s first ever remarkable tech start-up event, by Takeshi Hirano, the editor and writer for TechCrunch Japan, during his one-month visit to the city.   Then I could meet young aspiring entrepreneurs from more than a dozen of great tech start-up companies.

One of those companies, Stepcase was founded in 2007 by ex-RedHat engineer Leon Ho who is also known as the founder of Technorati Top 100 blog Lifehack.org.   He’s been in Tokyo during the last week in February, and there was a meet-up opportunity where Japanese techpreneurs and developers came together to listen to how he had developed a series of his popular photography apps for the iPhone and what he aims for in the next.

Steply is the most popular app of his company, and it allows you to share location-tagged snapshots with the community friends of yours, by tapping on the iPhone screen.   It was introduced last year, and has engaged more than 2 million users worldwide.   80% of them comes from Asia, Mr. Ho explains it it because Asian more eagerly want to take pictures in their daily lives than the people in the rest of the world.   Most of tech start-ups born in Asia aim to be highly evaluated in the western countries, but he said he would keep working harder for spreading his apps out among the Asian tech communities.

Steply uses Amazon EC2 and S3, some of attendees at the meet-up asked the founder, if the service costs a lot for using the cloud storage in order to store such an enormous number of picture files, but he answered it’s negative.   He visited Tokyo with his girlfriend Alice Lam, and she helped him promote the service among the attendees by distributing Steply’s logo printed T-shirts and stickers.   As well as holding sufficient capital and skilled system developers, having an understanding girlfriend could be necessary for a single male entrepreneur to achieve his great success, that I believe.

Steply is now looking for potential photo-related apps that can be integrated with its photo community network.   If you have developed your own apps for the iPhone and are interested to participate in the network, contact them via this form.   Furthermore, the company just released a new iPhone app called LabelBox a couple of days ago, which allows you to add your choice of picture-decorated labels on any of your snapshots and to publish it to Steply as well as other photo sharing services.

Introducing PowerPlug–The Monthly Contest For Indian Technology Entrepreneurs [iPad]

Well, we heart startups and we are now taking our obsession to the next level with PowerPlug Contest.LOGO_04

Before I share the details, let me share a perspective here – Pretty much all ‘startup award’ ceremonies in India do a namesake job – the awards often go to the same old startups (you know whom I am talking about) or the one popular in that particular quarter. There is hardly any attempt to go deep inside the rice fields & animal sheds of the startup farms.

Somebody needs to do something. At a much deeper level.

Introducing The PowerPlug Contest

Starting March 2011, Pluggd.in will be recognizing Indian technology entrepreneurs on a continuous basisevery month. We will announce a winner out of nominated startups. And the winner wins a brand new iPad!! Yeah, you read it right. A Brand New iPad, supported by Sequoia Capital India.

As an applicant, you would be up against the best startups in the country – and the people running them. You would have to come out all guns blazing to win this – and we are sure you would. The PowerPlug is a story you want to tell about yourself to the world and you should make sure the story is compelling to last you 1 month on Pluggd.in.PowerPlug_logo_1

The PowerPlug Contest : Details

The core idea behind PowerPlug is to recognize Indian entrepreneurs on a continuous basis.

As part of The PowerPlug of the month, entrepreneurs will share their startup details with Pluggd.in team and Pi will select one entrepreneur every month as the contest winner. The winner gets an opportunity (optional) to meet Sequoia Capital team members and spend half-day with them and get feedback/mentorship on his/her business plan.

The winner also gets a brand new Apple iPad sponsored by Sequoia Capital! Yeah! A Brand New Apple iPad is up for grab every month!

Process/Selection Parameter

The contest form opens 1st of every month and will be available till 20th. Pi team will do the first selection and the contest will then be open for public voting. Winners will be announced towards the end of every month.

As far as selection parameters are concerned, here are broad level parameters:

  • Potential of Business Idea
  • Articulation of the Business Plan and Understanding of the Competition
  • Execution Strategy
  • Team and company building
  • Maturity of Product/Revenue Stage.

Rules

  • The contest is applicable only for Indian Entrepreneurs.
  • An entrepreneur can apply for this contest only once in a quarter.
  • The startup should be at least 6 months old and revenue making. If not revenue making, the startup should have pivoted the business model/product at least once.
  • The contest is open to Indian entrepreneurs across different industries/verticals.
  • In general, preference will be given to product startups as we believe that IP creation is the biggest value and core differentiator.
  • Final decision lies with Pluggd.in Team.
  • The contest format will be revisited every quarter (and will be modified based on response from the entrepreneurial community).
  • The decision to fund (or not) rests squarely with Sequoia Capital and this contest serves no guarantee what so ever.

How Can I Help?

How To: Build an Internet Product Business from India

[Guest article by Sahil Parikh, Founder of Deskaway. Sahil shares key insights on building an Internet product company from India, from a talk he gave at IIT Mumbai]

* Keep scalability and cost efficiency in mind. Products are highly scalable but also expensive and time consuming to build and market.

* Most programmers you will meet will be veterans of the service industry. Watch out. Hiring for a product company needs a shift in thinking. In addition, I always believe in hiring for attitude.

* Try to keep a slim team initially. Get ready to wear multiple hats – development, design, marketing and support.

* Do not use offline strategies to build an online business. Marketing offline will increase the cost of customer acquisition. Selling SaaS to Indian companies will include multiple demos, presentations and negotiations. You need to evaluate if that is worth the cost of the product that you are selling. Instead focus on online marketing strategies – SEO, blogs, email marketing, social media, forums, q&a sites etc.

* Startups are hungry for attention and reviews. People know that and take advantage of this. Avoid startup events that will ask you to pay money to participate and lure you to meeting tens of VC’s. That is BS. Instead use that money for product development or customer acquisition.

* Build your initial user base quickly. Give free accounts and see how people use your product. Get early feedback and iterate.

* Focus on the minimal viable product that does a couple of things well. Don’t let featuritis get to you.

* Charge early and try to break-even or get profitable. There is lot to learn when people won’t pay for your product.

* Get quotes, testimonials and case studies from initial paying customers. This early credibility will go a long way to get others interested in your product and might just increase the conversion rate on your website. People like to know that others have liked your site and are using it.

* Build an affiliate program. Instead of one to one, think one to many. Most brick and mortar companies have gotten big by leveraging ‘partners’ or ‘resellers’.  The same applies to an online business.

* Get noticed early. Get reviewed in blogs. This is one of the best ways to spread the word.

* Create a clean and slick website. Back when I was in the web design business there was a stat which said that people take 1/20th of a second to make a decision about the site they are on. Make sure the initial user experience is a good one.

* In the iPhone/iPad era an ugly looking/feeling app is not going to cut it. Make sure your user interface is crisp. People will like your product if it feels good. This includes the speed of your app and site.

* Customers buy your vision and not what you are selling. There are tons of others who are selling the same thing as you. What you need to do is to fix your vision and truly understand why you are in business.

* Measure metrics and understand analytics. Everything on the web is measurable. Do this weekly. Create various spreadsheets to track traffic, engagement, visitor to trial, trial to paid, churn, traffic sources etc.

* Paid online marketing is expensive. Instead, spread the word via social media. It is much more personal and effective.

* Have someone with above average English writing skills. You will need an online community manager, customer service rep and someone who can maintain your website and blog. Broken English doesn’t cut it anymore.

* Lastly, don’t get too caught up in code. Remember, you are building a business, not just a product.

Orkut To Get a New Look [Inspired by Facebook?]

Orkut is all set to get a new look & feel (2 weeks from now), and while many of us believe that game is over for the social network, Google still wants to fight Facebook.

Upcoming changes to Orkut include

  • Left navigation, to help you get to the most popular features more easily.
  • A new larger profile photo, a popular request. Be sure to upload a higher resolution photo of yourself!
  • New full profile view, which lets you and your friends see your info, interests, badges, testimonials and recent photos and videos.
  • New fullscreen slideshow for photos (this surely seems to be inspired by Facebook).

The new UI will be made available to all users (i.e. no invitation play).

Are you going back to Orkut, even if they have the best user experience? First things first, Orkut needs to control spams on the site. And then, find out ways to bring back users (so far, there hasn’t been a single push drive by Google to reach out to ‘lost users’).

What’s your take? If you were the product manager of Orkut, what would you do?

Orkut recently turned 7 years old and last month, launched Orkut Box Office.
