Zipdial launches an Innovative "Zipdial to verify" service

Zipdial – a service which leverages the missed call mechanism – has introduced an innovative approach to work around the SMS restrictions brought about by the complex TRAI regulations. We have covered Zipdial in the past for surveys and also at out flagship event UnPluggd for running contests.

Verification of phone numbers has been usually done by ecommerce sites sending a verification SMS with a PIN to the user. The user then enters the PIN received in the ecommerce site thereby indicating his ownership of the number. This is fraught with its own challenges – e.g. late delivery of SMS (we have tried with the most common SMS gateways and all of them have had some issues with late delivery). Verification of users has become an issue with TRAI mandating that even these have to adhere to rules same as promotion SMS. Therefore the gateways have to block sending these SMS to people on DND list – almost striking a death blow to mobile phone verification.

Well almost. The new service by Zipdial generates a random number to call for an user once the user has submitted his mobile number on the registration form on the ecomm site. The user can call within a specified (customizable) time and his call is disconnected after a ring. The Zipdial system then recognizes the number called, and sends the appropriate message / indication / service call response to the ecomm site.

Myntra, Flipkart have already started utilizing this service for mobile number verification. This solution has several benefits including:

  • Zero cost and simple for end users
  • Immediate verification without any SMS delivery latency issues
  • Cost savings for the web business (no cost of sending SMS)

They also mention Tutorvista – where is is used for lead generation (same flow as above – but someone would call you after you verify your phone. Although the efficacy for this flow is somewhat circumspect – why wouldnt the user just call a toll free number and talk to a person for his requirement? The SMS flow was different because the user could be lazy and just have the PIN entered. The business would be spending money to call and get requirements from customer anyways – why should they spend it with Zipdial?

However that doesn’t take away the major advantages this powerful system brings to the table. I am sure they would be tweaking the system to polish it for other vendors e.g.

a) giving specific numbers for ecommerce sites (which ecomm sites can advertise)

b) figure out time – elastic verification methods (call any time)

c) Support for other countries including US (I am sure they have this)

d) API based support vs a web page plugin (integrate with mobile apps – and enable calling directly from the phone)

e) Two factor authentication – Some businesses might still require a PIN, could they customise CRBT to say a PIN e.g. even if its a missed call the PIN could be the a ringtone.

Do try out the new service at http://zipdial.com/zipdial/verify and let us know your feedback!

Introducing PowerPlug–The Monthly Contest For Indian Technology Entrepreneurs [iPad]

Well, we heart startups and we are now taking our obsession to the next level with PowerPlug Contest.LOGO_04

Before I share the details, let me share a perspective here – Pretty much all ‘startup award’ ceremonies in India do a namesake job – the awards often go to the same old startups (you know whom I am talking about) or the one popular in that particular quarter. There is hardly any attempt to go deep inside the rice fields & animal sheds of the startup farms.

Somebody needs to do something. At a much deeper level.

Introducing The PowerPlug Contest

Starting March 2011, Pluggd.in will be recognizing Indian technology entrepreneurs on a continuous basisevery month. We will announce a winner out of nominated startups. And the winner wins a brand new iPad!! Yeah, you read it right. A Brand New iPad, supported by Sequoia Capital India.

As an applicant, you would be up against the best startups in the country – and the people running them. You would have to come out all guns blazing to win this – and we are sure you would. The PowerPlug is a story you want to tell about yourself to the world and you should make sure the story is compelling to last you 1 month on Pluggd.in.PowerPlug_logo_1

The PowerPlug Contest : Details

The core idea behind PowerPlug is to recognize Indian entrepreneurs on a continuous basis.

As part of The PowerPlug of the month, entrepreneurs will share their startup details with Pluggd.in team and Pi will select one entrepreneur every month as the contest winner. The winner gets an opportunity (optional) to meet Sequoia Capital team members and spend half-day with them and get feedback/mentorship on his/her business plan.

The winner also gets a brand new Apple iPad sponsored by Sequoia Capital! Yeah! A Brand New Apple iPad is up for grab every month!

Process/Selection Parameter

The contest form opens 1st of every month and will be available till 20th. Pi team will do the first selection and the contest will then be open for public voting. Winners will be announced towards the end of every month.

As far as selection parameters are concerned, here are broad level parameters:

  • Potential of Business Idea
  • Articulation of the Business Plan and Understanding of the Competition
  • Execution Strategy
  • Team and company building
  • Maturity of Product/Revenue Stage.

Rules

  • The contest is applicable only for Indian Entrepreneurs.
  • An entrepreneur can apply for this contest only once in a quarter.
  • The startup should be at least 6 months old and revenue making. If not revenue making, the startup should have pivoted the business model/product at least once.
  • The contest is open to Indian entrepreneurs across different industries/verticals.
  • In general, preference will be given to product startups as we believe that IP creation is the biggest value and core differentiator.
  • Final decision lies with Pluggd.in Team.
  • The contest format will be revisited every quarter (and will be modified based on response from the entrepreneurial community).
  • The decision to fund (or not) rests squarely with Sequoia Capital and this contest serves no guarantee what so ever.

How Do I Apply?

Hop to the PowerPlug site and fill up the application form.

How Can I Help?

This is surely the first of its kind contest in India and if you are a startup enthusiast/love Pluggd.in – please help us reach out to your entrepreneurial friends (ReTweet/Share with your Facebook friends/Blog about the contest).

How To: Build an Internet Product Business from India

[Guest article by Sahil Parikh, Founder of Deskaway. Sahil shares key insights on building an Internet product company from India, from a talk he gave at IIT Mumbai]

* Keep scalability and cost efficiency in mind. Products are highly scalable but also expensive and time consuming to build and market.

* Most programmers you will meet will be veterans of the service industry. Watch out. Hiring for a product company needs a shift in thinking. In addition, I always believe in hiring for attitude.

* Try to keep a slim team initially. Get ready to wear multiple hats – development, design, marketing and support.

* Do not use offline strategies to build an online business. Marketing offline will increase the cost of customer acquisition. Selling SaaS to Indian companies will include multiple demos, presentations and negotiations. You need to evaluate if that is worth the cost of the product that you are selling. Instead focus on online marketing strategies – SEO, blogs, email marketing, social media, forums, q&a sites etc.

* Startups are hungry for attention and reviews. People know that and take advantage of this. Avoid startup events that will ask you to pay money to participate and lure you to meeting tens of VC’s. That is BS. Instead use that money for product development or customer acquisition.

* Build your initial user base quickly. Give free accounts and see how people use your product. Get early feedback and iterate.

* Focus on the minimal viable product that does a couple of things well. Don’t let featuritis get to you.

* Charge early and try to break-even or get profitable. There is lot to learn when people won’t pay for your product.

* Get quotes, testimonials and case studies from initial paying customers. This early credibility will go a long way to get others interested in your product and might just increase the conversion rate on your website. People like to know that others have liked your site and are using it.

* Build an affiliate program. Instead of one to one, think one to many. Most brick and mortar companies have gotten big by leveraging ‘partners’ or ‘resellers’.  The same applies to an online business.

* Get noticed early. Get reviewed in blogs. This is one of the best ways to spread the word.

* Create a clean and slick website. Back when I was in the web design business there was a stat which said that people take 1/20th of a second to make a decision about the site they are on. Make sure the initial user experience is a good one.

* In the iPhone/iPad era an ugly looking/feeling app is not going to cut it. Make sure your user interface is crisp. People will like your product if it feels good. This includes the speed of your app and site.

* Customers buy your vision and not what you are selling. There are tons of others who are selling the same thing as you. What you need to do is to fix your vision and truly understand why you are in business.

* Measure metrics and understand analytics. Everything on the web is measurable. Do this weekly. Create various spreadsheets to track traffic, engagement, visitor to trial, trial to paid, churn, traffic sources etc.

* Paid online marketing is expensive. Instead, spread the word via social media. It is much more personal and effective.

* Have someone with above average English writing skills. You will need an online community manager, customer service rep and someone who can maintain your website and blog. Broken English doesn’t cut it anymore.

* Lastly, don’t get too caught up in code. Remember, you are building a business, not just a product.

Orkut To Get a New Look [Inspired by Facebook?]

Orkut is all set to get a new look & feel (2 weeks from now), and while many of us believe that game is over for the social network, Google still wants to fight Facebook.

Upcoming changes to Orkut include

  • Left navigation, to help you get to the most popular features more easily.
  • A new larger profile photo, a popular request. Be sure to upload a higher resolution photo of yourself!
  • New full profile view, which lets you and your friends see your info, interests, badges, testimonials and recent photos and videos.
  • New fullscreen slideshow for photos (this surely seems to be inspired by Facebook).

The new UI will be made available to all users (i.e. no invitation play).

Are you going back to Orkut, even if they have the best user experience? First things first, Orkut needs to control spams on the site. And then, find out ways to bring back users (so far, there hasn’t been a single push drive by Google to reach out to ‘lost users’).

What’s your take? If you were the product manager of Orkut, what would you do?

Orkut recently turned 7 years old and last month, launched Orkut Box Office.

Yahoo! Mobage Passes 3 Million Users In 5 Months, Facebook Falls Down To 6th Position

Yahoo! Mobage [J], a joint PC social game platform by two Japanese web gorillas Yahoo! Japan and DeNA, announced [J] that the number of their users passed over three million in 5 months since its official open on October 1st, 2010.

3 million is bigger than 2.55 million, the number of active users Facebook Japan has gotten so far (according to Socialbakers.com), though Facebook’s Japanese users also shows a spike helped by recent media rush. See the chart from Socialbakers.

The social network service is designed around social games, but has user profile, messaging between users and user communities like other social networks. Yahoo! Mobage’s profile page is like this,

As DeNA repeatedly says their “virtual graph”(friends network does not necessary need to be based on your real-life network) does not compete with “social graph” oriented networks like Mixi (and Facebook), you may say how huge mobile Mobage-Town/Gree and PC Yahoo! Mobage has no relation with real-world-based Facebook’s success in Japan.

But if you start suspecting the future importance of building friends network from real-life, this means Facebook Japan becomes down to the 6th player, needs to chase Yahoo! Mobage in addition to Gree, Mobage-Town, Mixi and Twitter.

India Blocks Typepad [Digital Anarchy?]

Few days back Indian netizens were unable to access .blogspot addresses and now the story continues with typepad.

Airtel DSL shows following message, though  we are able to access typepad from Reliance network.

typepad-blocked

As per the message, DoT has ordered a ban on typepad – for reasons better known to them.

By the way, did you know that Indian Govt. can block websites (and you cannot contest the decision) – IT Act Bill?

Digital Anarchy? Well, read this interesting article (and discussion) on  Entrepreneurship – The China vs. India Divide.

Is Indian government trying to be China (in terms of anarchy) without the Chinese leverage?
