Guohe Ad – mobile Ad integrator

If you are a mobile app developer, have you ever wondered which mobile ad platform should you use, which one can give you the highest payback, or CPM? Actually, you need not concern about such issues, if you use the services of Guohe Ad.

The Beijing based company integrates 10 of the most popular ad platforms in China, including Youmi, Domob, Wiad (from Wiyun), WooBoo, AdChina and SmartMad, and three global ad platform, iAd from Apple, AdMob from Google and Millennial Media. So that, app developers can dynamically adjust the sources and display of their ads and maximize their payback. For example, if today ads from Youmi is paying the highest rate, you can adjust all your apps to display Youmi ad.

Also, another important function Guohe Ad offered to its app developers is a third party monitoring feature. App developers can monitor the actual traffic and ad impression of their apps from Guohe Ad’s analytics platform, so that, they can check these with the numbers provided by the ad platforms.

“This is very important because some of the ad platform will reduce the payout rate for different reasons, for example, the ad is displayed to the same person too many times,” said Ron Zhang, marketing director of Guohe Ad, “With our analytics platform, App developers can at least know what is happening, rather than taking the ad platforms words blindly.”

Founded last year, Guohe Ad currently serves over 10 million ad requests per day and covers millions of smartphone users. Most of the apps using Guohe are games. Apps for reading fictions, news, jokes are also popular. Last but not least, the utility type of apps, for example those for weather, subway station, managing data of the mobile phone, etc.

The company just launched a new version, internally codenamed Guohe 3.0. “The user interface is greatly improved. The old interface has lots of limitation. With the new version, app developers can visualize the process of turning impressions into revenue more clearly and hence optimize the process,” said Ron.

Another new feature is called G-circle. It is like a marketplace for App developers to exchange ads with each other. “If app developers want to promote their apps but they cannot pay, they can use this function to do ad exchange with other apps. We have a formula to make sure the transaction is fair,” said Ron.

Guohe Ad got an angel investment at the end of last year and it is considering further funding plan later this year.

Chinese QA Initiative Mifan.me: Users’ Sticky Results From Good Experience

The success of Quora and formspring.me in social information seeking area is an inspiration for QA sites, which haven’t evolved much for a long time.

Following the pioneer’s step, Zhihu(like Quora) becomes an overnight sensation in Chinese websphere, with many people of consequence actively asking and answering question there, including Kaifu Lee, the former Google China head who founded Innovation Works, Hong Bo, one of the most prominent internet observer in China, Yang Bo, founder of Douban.com and many other experts from various fields.

However, Quora isn’t the only answer to Social QA service, and it’s more serious with higher bars for users. For instance, only invited users can register and join in Quora now. The site has 547,000 users as of Jan 2011. On the other hand, Formspring.me which founded in Nov. 2009, now has a total of over 24 million users with over 3.5 million unique visitors every day. And yes, anyone can sign up here.

The differences between Quora and formspring.me lie on many aspects besides the entry barrier, Quora prefers real users and serious and constructive answers. Users can vote up or vote down answers if they think the answer is good or stupid. People want to be smart – or at least sounds like so – so it’s much easier to locate lengthy answers on Quora or its Chinese counterpart Zhihu. While formspring.me tells a totally different story. Most of the questions are just for friends’ amusement. You can almost ask anything there and have your friends answer them. That’s why to many, it’s a social tool to enhance friendship via interesting questions.
Mifan.me, the Chinese formspring.me, apparently bears the same approach to social QA innovation. Went online couple weeks ago, its founders all shared the same and simple vision that the site should serve the real users rather than a small number of experts or so-called high-end users.

Currently, there’re 7 people in Mifan.me team, the dev team used to work at Baidu, Tencent and Shanda, some of the top-notch internet entities in China, so Li Chong, Mifan co-founder and CEO I talked to, told me that they didn’t worry about server overloading issue at all even if their users cross 10 million because of the scalable architecture.

When asked about why they decide upon the Formspring.me model, Li said that with the trends of online services going towards social and vertical, they saw opportunity in services combining both. Another reason is that, they believe that online life service area lacks of attention and curation. There’s too much potential to be tapped, for example, location or regional based QA service, vertical QA site with special focus and so on. And also, they think formspring.me is very cool, hence they followed the most popular QA site’s ideology.

Life service is going online, while whatever online is going social

The creation of Mifan.me has taken the advantage of such an opportunity when life service is going online while whatever online is going social. According to Li, users are sticky with the newly-released site because of its excellent user experience.

As for business model, Yu disclosed that except for online ads which are adopted by most websites, Mifan team also considered about value-added service through data mining, targeted classified information etc. But there’re more to be explored, Yu said. Because, he believed that for most listed companies, they spent at least 2 years in early stage testing out ideas.

With more and more social QA sites enter competition, such as Zheye, Rfanti, Sinan(which means ancient Chinese compass) and Baidu’s Xinzhi, Mifan team actually saw this as an benefit, for they can cultivate the markets.

Strong and Immediate Interaction

When asked about the site’s most profound innovation, Li said that strong and immediate interaction are what the Mifan team is raving about.

For future plans, Mifan hopes to amass over 1 million users by year end. As to products, mifan planning to release mobile clients for iOS, Android phones, as well as provides stronger API for 3rd party developers to ramp up the ecosystem. They’re also considering partner with sizable social networking sites to complete their platforms.

Facebook Opens The World’s First Official Navigation Site For Japan

When Japanese are asked why Facebook, the world-level phenomenon, has not taken off in Japan yet, many answer that its user interface is hard to understand, which is strange because the UI did not keep away people in many other countries.

There might be some cultural issues which make it difficult to attract Japanese. An answer from quite uncertain direction is a newly launched information site Facebook Navi(f-navigation.jp).

"The world's first official Facebook Navigation site" is a site contains the following items,

  • What is Facebook?
  • Facebook usage manual
  • Editors' choice of Japanese Facebook pages
  • Editors' choice of Facebook Apps

As Facebook has been translated to Japanese in 2008, all of these items must be well covered on Facebook itself, with using its social graph recommendation.

According to the about us page [J], this site is "the only one navigation service authorized by Facebook". The site is managed by Nabi Un'ei Iinkai(Navi management committee), which is noted that "there are no capital or administration ties with Facebook, Inc.".

The lead managing company displayed is All About, Inc., which runs All About Japan [J], Japanese version of All About.

Having another official (but not related) site may show that Facebook admits that its own site is not self explanatory for Japanese. But not only Facebook can be blamed for its lack of localization, as Twitter, very successful in Japan, also has been having TwiNavi, Twitter Japanese navigation site [J] run by a subsidiary of Digital Garage, Twitter's Japanese partner.

Different from Twitter, TwiNavi seems not so successful for me and I am unsure if it really helped Twitter's popularity. But some net-illiterate people might became to know how to use Twitter via there, it is better than nothing. Facebook Navi could be another "learning from antecessor" idea from what Facebook saw Twitter's Japanese success.

Kouxun, Amazing Voice-to-Text Application for Smart Phones

The first time and also the last time I was using a voice recognition software is around 10 years ago when I was working on my university thesis. It’s IBM ViaVoice. I was just tired of typing, but I had to give up after several days’ trying as I realized that it’s even more time consuming if you had to do the correction from time to time. iOS now comes with a simple voice recognition function too, but I have not seen anyone using it to play song, make call etc, and it does not work well with Chinese too.

I was totally amazed by Kouxun, the voice-to-text mobile application developed by iFlyteq (app store download). It’s deadly simple to use. Basically you just speak (Chinese mandarin only) with normal speed, the text will be auto typed in which can be sent as short message or email by one-click. Even the punctuations are auto inserted into the sentence. I’ve tried a couple of times, and the results are just perfect.

Kouxun requires the internet access as it’s actually a typical cloud-computing service. You voice is captured and its information is somehow sent to the cloud where it’s processed and return the text back to the phone.

Kouxun is probably the first app I’ve seen truly driven by technology over the cloud. Its owner iFlyteq was founded in June 1999 based on research originally conducted in the National Intelligent computer R & D Center and the Human-Machine Speech Communication Laboratory of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). The company’s principal products were a Chinese Text-to-speech engine and related software applications. “iFlyteq has over 10 years experience serving enterprise and government with the advanced voice recognition technology,” Jiang Tao, VP of iFlyteq said to me, “We saw the huge opportunity in current mobile industry where more and more consumers are using smart phone and get used to internet access over mobile device”.

“Our mission is simple”, Jiang said, “Set your Fingers Free.” Nobody knows if Apple plans to enhance its voice recognition function in future version of iOS. I hope it does as sometime voice is just much more convenient and efficient than moving fingers.

Marketing Gimmick Or CSR?

A first of its kind in India and like me, if you think this is a marketing gimmick, I’d still say hats off to Snapdeal team:
