Short of Business Professionals, Why LinkedIn Does Not Work in China

Why LinkedIn does not work in China? This is one of the hottest questions being discussed recently in China because Linkedin went to IPO and apparently the massive Chinese market has no real professional social networks yet. A hedge fund manager recently gave me a very interesting point of view, which I also agreed.

He said the reason why LinkedIn becomes successful in the U.S. is that: there are many professionals (accountants, consultants, lawyers, engineers, etc.) with 10+ years, 20+ years or 30+ years of experience looking for jobs in the U.S.  They post their resume on LinkedIn, so that recruiters can find them.

Many of the LinkedIn users are doing that – posting their resume on their LinkedIn account. In fact, recruitment accounts for 65% of LinkedIn’s revenue.

The situation is different in China.  Deng Xiao Ping’s economic reform did not happen until 1980s.  There are no business professional with over 30 years experience.  In fact, those with 15+ or 10+ years experience are already rare commodity in the market and they are bombarded by phone calls of headhunters almost everyday.  There is no need to post their resume online for job purpose.

“Maybe in 10 years, Chinese LinkedIn will work, when there are more business professional with 10 or 20 years of experience looking for jobs,” said the hedge fund manager.

This reminds me of the interview with the CEO of Wealink, one of the earliest Linkein in China. Its CEO said,

Professional social network needs white-collar users which are mainly based in several tier-one cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, so there actually is not much room for a Chinese Linkedin to grow quickly.

We may have a big Chinese Linkedin unless it can find something else that is valuable to the business professionals.  Right now the players are trying:

  • Tianji told me they have a lot of discussion forum, groups and activities, to help   the business professionals to socialize with each other.  And hopefully, friendship built this way can extend to business.
  • Hengzhi said they have 8 business applications for the users to manage their daily agenda, such as  contact management, Q&A, and Power Point document sharing.

But so far, they haven’t found the “killer app” yet.  All the Chinese LinkedIn clones are still struggling. Whoever found what the Chinese professional need the most will be the winner.  Or just as the hedge fund manager suggested we just have to wait another 5-10 years.

India telecomm company invests in Singapore-based mobile solutions firm LeapSky Wireless

LeapSky Wireless, which is working on a solution that gives business travelers access to wireless Internet on mobile devices by tapping on the host country’s 3G network, has received new funding from India-based telecomms company One97 Communications.

Currently, business travelers are restricted to wifi access in the hotel, which often allows connection to one device, or they have to purchase a local 3G SIM card, which can have prohibitive costs. The hardware consists of a compact wifi router with a SIM card embedded within, giving customers hassle-free access to the Internet while on the go.

But their product purports to do more: Customers would not need to deal with a new mobile carrier when they visit a new country, since they now only need to register with LeapSky.

Besides travelers, partner operators would also benefit, since Leapsky would need to purchase 3G and Wifi bandwidth from them.

The company, which was incubated at the Singapore Management University Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, had also received seed funding from the Singapore government’s ‘Spring TECS-POV‘ grant.

The product is set for launch in the last quarter of this year.

You don’t need professional designers to develop good products

“Design can never be complete because design solves people’s problems, and people are constantly changing,” said Kevin Fox, a product designer of Mozilla Labs, in concluding the Rainmakers LIVE! 2011 mini-conference in Silicon Valley.

With the theme “Bridging People and Technology with Design”, the Rainmakers put Fox onstage together with four other Silicon Valley-based designers and/or start-up founders; Luke Wroblewski of Bagcheck, Jason Putorti of Votizen, Garry Tan of Posterous and Y Combinator, and Jessica Mah of inDinero.

Three hundred participants made up of design and product enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and students based in Silicon Valley attended the event held at the AOL Auditorium on Jun 20, 2011.

We bring you the key takeaways of the panel discussion:

Q1. What does design mean to you?

Jessica Mah: Helping solve problems for users. In the case of InDinero, design is about helping business owners track their money online. It does not matter how something looks visually, but more of the user interaction.
Jason Putorti: Design is a process. In design, we work to find the intersection between user needs and business needs.
Luke Wroblewski: It depends on whom you ask the question to. To me, design is all encompassing.
Kevin Fox: Design can be anything. But it has to be functional, appealing and gratifying. It is important to give joy to the users.
Garry Tan: Good design is making something that people want.

Q2: What is your top principle in web design?

Jessica Mah: Test your design out with people. Go through your mock-ups with people.
Jason Putorti: I come from an advertising agency background. To me, user comprehension is very important. What is the most important thing in the page for the user?
Garry Tan: People do not get copy correctly. As a result, users get lost. This is a big problem. Designers should think about how they are communicating to one single person, what is in their mind, and what needs to be done to make the person do what they intend.
Luke Wroblewski: This is a big question. To me, the number one principle is “Do no harm.” Do not communicate the wrong thing and waste the users’ time. Today, time is the most precious thing. Wasted times means doing harm.
Kevin Fox: Design should make something very easy to understand yet seemingly invisible. Design is creating things to make things more productive.

Q3: Is there a shortage of designers in Silicon Valley? If there is, what can be done?

Jason Putorti: The stereotype of a designer in Silicon Valley is someone who has done “XYZ”, has “N” years of experience and maybe lives in San Francisco. The point is, most of them are happy. It is tough to move these guys unless they are inspired. However, most people (founders) do not have things that are really inspiring. Great designers want to work on something inspiring; something that is going to create social impact and change the world.

Founders have to think bigger and have an inspiring vision. This way, he/she can attract people to solve the big problem.

Secondly, consider thinking outside of the box. Look further out. For example, I have worked with designers from Sweden.

Jessica Mah: There is a massive reliance on design help. For example, think of a businessperson trying to recruit an engineer. This is like a start-up founder trying to recruit a designer but do not know how to design.

Kevin Fox: Designing is like cooking. Anyone can cook. There are recipes to follow for baseline design. But they are recipes. Imagine yourself as a chef. You have the recipe, but you start to play with the recipe, create your own techniques, explore what works and does not work. What are the patterns? How do people think? How to make new things that people like? This is the path for people to become designers.

Luke Wroblewski: When start-up founders say they are looking for a designer, they are not looking for a designer. For example, when I hear people saying “I need someone to create killer user experience”, it is too late. You already made the product. You already designed it. You already created the user experience. The sheer fact that you got that far means it is too late.

When people say that they want a designer, the designer has to take the technology and make it meaningful for people. The question in designing is what is the core essence of the product?

Many people have the misconception of the word “design”. People think it is making a product fanciful, when design is the core of the product.

Also, people tend to separate product from user experience. Fundamentally, product is the user experience.

Q4. For a coder who would like to learn design, what skills should I pick up? Which component (e.g. Typography, Copy) is the most important?

Kevin Fox: Get to the core. Components such as typography and copy are the makeup.

Luke Wroblewski: There is no need to take a class. Just put things out there, see how people use it and then iterate and move on.

Also, remember that engineering is crucial. There is no design without building something on the web. It is about collaboration – I learnt most about design from my engineering co-founder. He sees the system. He tells me what can be done and cannot be done.

Jason Putorti: Focus on interaction design and usability – everything comes in later.

About Rainmakers
Rainmakers LIVE! started with the simple idea of bringing amazing people passionate for design and entrepreneurship together. The event aims to be the catalyst in bringing people together and fostering a network of entrepreneurs.

Rainmakers LIVE! 2011 was organised by Julian Koo, Amanda Lim, Tay Kah Hong, Lucas Ngoo and Ang Sea Law together with NUS Entrepreneurs’ Association (NUSEA). NUSEA consists of participants of the one-year NOC in Silicon Valley programme, where participants take classes at Stanford University while working full-time in a Silicon Valley start-up.

Rainmakers was the name used by Gwendolyn Regina Tan (editor’s note: yes, the Gwen from SGE) when she produced the first NUSEA newsletter back in 2005. Later on, Rainmakers LIVE! the conference was conceptualised and organised by Gwen and the rest of the NUSEA executive committee then. Her Silicon Valley juniors have since then continued to carry on the legacy of the brand.

During the mixer, attendees got to enjoy the food catered by Coho and were invited to leave their feedback on Surveylicious a mobile survey platform. Surveylicious made giving feedback easy and fun amidst the bustling networking taking place at the lobby of AOL.

The Rainmakers LIVE! event is sponsored by Infocomms Development Authority of Singapore. AOL is the venue sponsor.

Mobile Internet in India– Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore Rule [Kolkata Stands At Number 4].

It’s quite obvious that Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore rule the mobile Internet penetration, owing to the savvy population these cities have, but what’s surprising is that Kolkata comes out as number 4 in mobile Internet usage in India (above Chennai and Pune).

As per Opera’s latest report, following are the top 10 Indian cities when it comes to mobile Internet usage:

Mobile Internet in India: Top Handsets

  • Nokia 5130 XpressMusic
  • Nokia 2700c

  • Nokia N70
  • Nokia 6300
  • Nokia 2730c
  • Nokia 7210 Supernova
  • Nokia N73
  • Nokia N72
  • Nokia 2690

It’s all Nokia.  For a short term, Micromax made an entry in the top 10 handsets, but Nokia’s ‘many-devices’ strategy has overthrown Micromax.

Also, it’s important to note that Nokia doesn’t bundle Opera browser in its smartphone – so keep that in mind while reading the report.

Insights from the report

  • Facebook seems to be making a major play against Orkut’s marketshare, much as it has eroded the marketshare of MySpace in countries such as the United States.
  • Vuclip (mobile-optimized video) and Mobile2Day (a mobile portal) are new to the top 10 compared to the same time last year, indicating that sites intended primarily for mobile access are gaining in importance.
  • Nokia 2690 jumped from #10 to #1 in India [from May 2010 to May 2011].

Coming back to the title of this article, why do you think Kolkata fares better than cities like Chennai and Pune?

Baidu Beta Testing Personalized Homepage

Google released new product Google+ in its late effort to rival Facebook and Twitter in social networking area even after several unsuccessful attempts including controversial Google Buzz, Google Wave and so on. Its Chinese counterpart Baidu also had a tough trip ramping up its own social network services, with the latest release of brand-new Baidu personalized homepage (pictured below), it seems Baidu has made up its mind to keep trying.

It seems the giant Chinese search engine is beta testing the new feature, only a small proportion of its users are directed to the newly-revamped personalized homepage, on which lots of Baidu services are integrated there, including updates from Baidu Tieba(BBS), Baidu Zone(SNS), Baidu Zhidao (social Q&A) and other apps from Baidu Open Platform.

According to some observers, the beta-testing product looks like the profile page on SNS websites, users can personalized it based on one’s needs. And in the future it could integrate with Baidu’s social networking platform. Baidu founder and CEO Robin Li said in this June that”Baidu is building a common social networking platform as infrastructure, when user comes to Baidu, he may switch seamlessly and intuitively among different Baidu products and apps. He may spend more time on Baidu, and he can also have instant access to desirable information.” One may wonder, could this be the common platform Robin talked about.

Japan Digest – 2 Jul

Here you can find interesting startup news from Japan, not only from its capital, Tokyo, but also other startup hubs like Fukuoka, Kyoto, Osaka, and many more.

(1) Nielsen Japan, a consumer and healthcare-related market research company, investigated the traffic Dropbox and Evernote have seen in the past 12 months, and it appears the both services have enjoyed much success  for the first five months of 2011.

(2) According to a recent report in business daily The Nikkei, Amazon Japan is planning to hire Japanese graduates coming straight out of college for the first time ever in spring 2012.

(3) Business daily Nikkei is reporting that KDDI, Foursquare’s partner in Japan, is ready to buy a 5% stake worth 500 million Yen (US$6.2 million) in Colopl, a simulation game in which cell phone users manage a virtual colony. In other words, the company is now valued at US$125 million.

(4) When the Japanese were asked why they think Facebook, a global phenomenon, has not taken off in Japan yet, many answer that its user interface is hard to understand, which is strange because the UI did not keep away people in many other countries. A potential solution is the newly launched information site Facebook Navi(f-navigation.jp).

(5) Groupon Japan is taking its competition with rival Ponpare up a notch: Everybody who registers for their service can download a PC game worth 3,980 Yen (US$50) for free.

Japan’s Daily Coupon Market: Is Groupon About To Lose Its Top Position To Ponpare?

Japan's market for daily coupon services is heating up. It has been pretty much a two-horse race for months now, with Groupon Japan as the top player in the market and Recruit's Ponpare as a close second.

In April, for example, Groupon Japan was estimated to have racked up $18.6 million in sales, while Ponpare is said to have generated $14.5 million in the same month.

But according to coupon search service CP4U, Ponpare has made about as much money as Groupon Japan last month. In fact, the difference between the two sites has never been smaller, after Ponpare doubled it sales from 858 million yen to 1.64 billion yen from May to June.

Groupon, however, still sits on the No. 1 position in Japan daily coupon market (sales in June: 1.65 billion yen). Compared to Groupon and Ponpare, other players barely play a role:
