Singapore is most innovative country in Asia?
Singapore has been ranked the most innovative country in Asia and third in the world by the latest Global Innovation Index just released by French Business School INSEAD. This year’s results mark a vast improvement for Singapore, which came in 7th overall last year.
The GII computes a score based on several elements, such as institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, as well as creative and scientific output.
But while Singapore has done well in terms of input, scoring first overall, the country ranks only 17th when it comes to output.
What this means is that while the government has invested a lot of capital to create the most conducive environment for innovation, the dividends produced are below expectations. Output is measured in terms of the creation of knowledge and the production of creative goods and services.
In fact, in terms of matching input with output (Innovation Efficiency Index), Singapore only ranks 94th.
Here’s what the GII report says of the island-state:
Singapore shows its strongest performance in the Input Sub-Index, coming in at 1st place on the basis of its strengths in the Institutions (9th), Human capital and research (1st), Infrastructure (9th), Market sophistication (2nd), and Business sophistication (1st) pillars. However, Singapore’s Innovation Efficiency Index ranking is low (37th among high-income countries, 94th in the general rankings); this shows up in its relative weak performance in the Output Sub-Index, where it is ranked 17th overall (Scientific outputs at 17th place and Creative outputs at 33rd). Singapore is ranked 41st in patent applications at the national office, 82nd in national office trademark applications, and 82nd in creative services exports.
In terms of overall rankings, only five Asian countries have cracked the top 20. Below are the placings for South and East Asia:

Baidu Announces Restructuring
Baidu, the largest Chinese search giant, announced a restructuring plan of its business lines including sales, commercial operations, user products and technologies, commercial products and technologies(cloud computing and mobile included), and said it will implement an executive rotational program in an attempt to spur innovation and efficiency. This is the biggest ever organizational restructure since its founding in 2000.
According to Baidu, after the realignment the search company will achieve efficiency in products research and development, operation and sales; bring out the synergy effects among its divisions. It could also help Baidu to be more innovative in new market sectors.
At the same time, Baidu announced the departure of Shen Haoyu, its senior vice president of business operations. Shen will be joining Chinese online shopping powerhouse 360buy to serve as chief operating officer, people familiar with the matter said.
Observers remarked that, Shen’s hands-on experience in sales and payment management would be a boost to 360buy’s sales and operation capacity. The company raised over 1 billion in its latest round and was reportedly to go public soon.

ZapakPlus Launches PC Games On Monthly Subscription at Rs.99
Relaince Entertainment’s gaming arm, Zapak, has launched subscription based PC gaming at ZapakPlus. ZapakPlus is initially offering 120 full version games at Rs.99 a month.
A client download of less than 1 MB is needed after which users can download multiple games from publishers like Codemasters, Focus Home Interactive, MumboJumbo, Absolutist, iWin etc.
Apart from the online payment, Zapak is also using its network of cash collection points across 50 cities. Though subscription based online gaming is new in India and it is hard to predict the market but given the target audience, expecting a decent internet connection would be to optimistic. Hard core gamers are definitely not falling for such games.
Apart from the legalities we also wonder how is it different from downloading game through torrent? On web legal/illegal cannot be your USP, can it?

840Mn Mobile Subscribers in India – 70% active. MTNL Least Active [TRAI Report]
TRAI has released the latest data on telecom subscribers for the month ending May 31st 2011.
Key Take Aways:
1. Total telecom subscriber base is at 874.68 Mn.
2. Total mobile subscriber base is at 840.28Mn. Active mobile subscriber base is 70% at 588.13 Mn. Idea leads with 92.33% active users. MTNL has 34.39% active.
3. Broaband subscription is at 12.12Mn. Increase of around 101K from month of April.
4. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests increase from 8.54Mn subscribers at the end of April 2011 to 10.57Mn subscribers at the end of May 2011.
5. BSNL maintains highest market share in wireline subscription at 72.27%.
6. Total loss in wireline subscriptions was 176K.

Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum 2011 – 25-28 Jul
Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum (JWEF) 2011 will be held in the various tertiary institutions across Singapore. It aims to gather entrepreneurs and youths together to share their vision, finding, ideas and recommendation on current global issues. This event will consist of a seminar and a networking cum discussion session, which facilitates the transfer of knowledge from industry professional to student participants and develop entrepreneurial skills in the youths.
