Expect more mobile-based attacks, says security expert

A security expert has warned that while Apple’s iOS devices haven’t been mass-targeted by hackers, consumers – especially those with jailbroken iPhones and iPads – should be wary about possible attacks in the future.

“When the iPad and iPhone first came out, the devices were what security consultants have been asking for,” said Andy Ellis, the Chief Security Officer for Akamai. “Each app is sandboxed from each other, there’s no common file system that could be exploited, and there wasn’t multitasking, so there wasn’t chance for a process-space invasion.”

“Unfortunately, Apple has been moving away from that security model, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more attacks on that,” he said, adding that for now, users have a slight headstart over the hackers as there hasn’t been a large-scale attack on the iOS platform.

As for Android devices, Ellis said that he’s unsure if Google would head towards a more secure or insecure model for its OS, and added that those with jailbroken iOS devices are the ones he’s most wary about.

“The Android phones and jailbroken iPhones probably represent the biggest risk we have because those who jailbroken them have basically taken a device that was secure by default, and replaced it with an OS that is known to be insecure,” he said.

Going mobile

Besides being a target for hackers, Ellis is seeing a rising trend in using mobile devices tethered to mobile broadband networks to carry out hacks and Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS).

“It’s not the compromised smartphones that are used to launch the attacks, but rather the laptops that are on a mobile broadband network. We no longer have the clean attribution of where these attacks come from,” he said.

Referring to figures from Akamai’s State of the Internet report, Ellis also said that there were more Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS) in the last quarter of 2010 than in the previous three quarters. And the numbers are slowly growing this year.

According to Ellis, high-profile DDoS attacks were rare in between 2005 to 2009, but came back strongly following the July 4 DDoS attacks on US government sites in which Akamai’s clients withstood a 200GB/s surge of traffic. Other sites, however, went down, and it was after those attacks that the DDoS method became popular among hackers again.

Like last year, however, Ellis expects a spike of attacks to come at the final quarter of this year. “Most attacks are timed according to when the hackers can do the most harm, and for online traders that’s during the holiday season.”

A Phone Concept: No Keypad, No Dialing [For Blue Collar Jobs]

No keypad phone isn’t a reference to N9, but a concept phone which is developed by Bangalore based Nan Rajan.image

The phone has no keypad and requires no knowledge of numbers, symbols or alphabets and requires no dialing/no knowledge of numbers/alphabets/symbols etc.

The phone is essentially targeted towards blue collar job services and enables them to find new opportunities (think of this as a self-service version of babajobs). The ‘Illiterate Phone’ is a 1-button phone and supports Voice messaging (Illiterate to illiterate calls).

Nan Rajan is still working on the prototype and here is a video that demonstrates the phone capabilities.

Pretty basic, right? But a bit of packaging and improvement on form factor could just add to the magic. What’s your take?

Indian Startup EAFT Technologies Launches Android Based Magictile Marathon Tablet [Priced at 29K]

We are now halfway through of what is called the Year of the tablet PC and have already seen some pretty interesting devices that have been launched to battle the iPad. Even though many have tried and failed at launching a truly successful iPad killer, we don’t expect new products to stop appearing any time soon.

And as we have time and again said, the Android operating system is empowering companies to bring out their own version of what they feel is a device that can challenge Apple when it comes to smartphones and tablet devices. We have already seen Indian phone manufacturers hop onto the Android bandwagon, with Micromax, Spice and Olive making home-grown Android powered phones and now its time to shift their attention to the hugely untapped tablet market in India.

Bangalore based EAFT Technologies has finally launched their Android powered tablet, I say finally because you might not remember but this was one of the devices showcased last year in India. Although the specifications of the tablet have been changed since it was initially showcased, the device still ships with Android 2.2 (which is not tablet optimized). The device showcased last year was called ‘Magictile’ but the company probably wants to highlight that this is a new device and is calling it the ‘Magictile Marathon’ Here’s a look at some of the features:

product2

  • 10.1 inch LCD capacitive multi-touch screen.
  • Nvidia Tegra 2 processor @1GHz and 512MB RAM.
  • WiFi b/g , 3G ( data only)
  • Accelerometer
  • Ships with Android 2.2 Froyo ( no word on further software upgrades yet)
  • EAFT AppStore ( No Android Market?)
  • 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI out, docking port
  • HD video playback
  • 1.3 MP front facing camera

So here’s what we think looking at the specs, the hardware looks solid but where’s the software? Still running Android 2.2 when other tablets are running Android 3.1 honeycomb? And why is there no Android Market?

Well these are sure disappointments but its not all bad. The hardware can surely support newer versions of Android but can you count on a start-up to deliver timely software updates when giants like Samsung take forever to roll them out. All in all it looks like a solid built tablet that was cheated on its software side. Priced at 29k its slightly steep for buying a brand new tablet whose software is already outdated.

This will not be the first time that an Indian company has tried to launch a tablet PC and it will not be the last. You may remember NotionInk that launched their Adam tablet PC running Android last year and has received mixed reviews. Olive telecom too tried its hand at making one, the OlivePad. News is that other Indian phone manufacturers are soon to follow in the footsteps of these first movers, these new entrants may include Micromax, Lava and Zen. Looking at how much scope there is in India for well priced devices, we should see an onslaught of Android tablets from Indian companies.

Would you buy a tablet manufactured by an Indian company if its well priced?Do you ‘trust’ Indian manufacturers to built high-quality tablets (and not just bring cheaper imported tablets?).

Mobile Banking In India–$350 Billion Worth Of Transaction Expected By 2015

First, a recap of telecom/debit card data: India has 700 million+ mobile subscribers, just 240 million individuals with bank accounts, 20 million credit cards, 88,000 bank branches, and 70,000 ATMs. Of the households without a bank account, 42 percent have at least one mobile phone.

Mobile banking could be a game changer and while we have been hearing of this for quite sometime, it’s also important to note that very recently, transaction limit for mobile wallet card was increased to INR 50K and as per latest report by BCG, Mobile banking in India is set to generate fee-based income of Rs 20,250 crore over the next five years, mainly driven by lower transaction cost, favourable regulatory environment and UID project.

By 2015, $350 billion in payment and banking transactions could flow through mobile phones, compared with about $235 billion of total credit- and debit-card transactions today. This forecast is based on a recent analysis conducted by The Boston Consulting Group and depends on the willingness of banks, telecom operators, regulators, and consumers collectively to embrace this form of payment.

It is far less costly to offer banking and payment services using mobile technology than to build new branches in a country that, outside of major cities, is still largely rural. As mobile-money initiatives take shape, the projected fee income in India from mobile payment and banking transactions could exceed $4.5 billion by 2015. That amount is less than it might appear. These fees will be shared by banks, telecom operators, device makers, and service providers. [BCG]

Mobile Money & The Indian Market

Mobile banking is a tale of two metamarkets in India: rural and urban. Over the next five years, Unbanked rural markets could begin to rival the urban market in size. In urban areas, many consumers have bank accounts but still rely on cash for 90 to 95 percent of small-ticket transactions. Mobile payments would be a tremendous convenience for these consumers.

The mobile banking industry in India is ready to take off, especially with the ecosystem players – i.e. operators, banks and mobile manufacturers coming together and launching pilot services, though the bigger question is are these services planned keeping ‘consumers’ at the center, or is it just about proof of concepts?

What’s your opinion?

Mamashai – SNS for Mothers and Fathers

Sina Weibo Will Launch Virtual Currency Next Monday

Although Sina Weibo is spreading rapidly in China, investors are concerned about its ability to generate revenue. To address such an issue, Sina Weibo is to launch its own virtual currency. We already reported that the information about its virtual currency named Weibi had been leaked in its wiki page for developers. An industry insider has just pinged us saying Weibi will be soft launched next Monday (18th July).

In just 9 months, Sina Weibo users have increased almost 3 times, from 50 million last October to 140 million recently.  It becomes a popular social network in China for people to follow celebrities and news.   Many white collar users also use it to connect with their personal friends.

But industry experts criticize it lacks a working business model.  The introduction of Weibo virtual currency should help to address such problem.

To encourage the use of its virtual currency, Sina Weibo will not take anything from application developers for the first year.  But in the future, applications accepting such currency will have to pay Sina a certain percentage when they redeem it to Reminbi, said the insider.

The first batch of applications using Sina Weibo’s  virtual currency include about 10 applications.  Most of them are online games but there will also be an e-Commerce application, said the insider.

Da Vinci’s Singaporean founder in hot soup

First came damning reports by Chinese broadcaster CCTV that luxury furniture retailer Da Vinci manufactured their ‘imported’ Italian goods in China, sent them to Italy, and then brought them back again to obtain an ‘import certificate’.

Next came a chaotic press conference on July 13 where the Singaporean founder and CEO Doris Phua issued a press statement saying that all  furniture produced by her company are actually made in Italy. However, she was interrupted by an angry customer who “claimed that he had bought over 10 million RMB worth of furniture from DaVinci, and just wanted to know if he should believe the CCTV report or Da Vinci,” reported Shanghaiist.

Near the end of the presser, she broke down, apologized to the media, and left without taking any questions.

In more bad news for the beleaguered company,  the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau revealed soon after that some of the furniture that were purported to be from Italy never even left China in the first place, said ShanghaiDaily.com

XingCloud: Harnessing the Power of Cloud to Distribute Games Instantly and Globally

Social Gaming Going up on Hype

With the booming of social networking sites worldwide and the maturity of technology that enables browser-based games to offer players with marvelous experience on a par with client-based online games, social gaming area is crowded with small and young startups which are lured to the nascent waterfront for its profitability and potential.

According to a report by market research firm iSuppli, the global market for social networking games amounted to US$ 1.4 billion in 2010, up a whopping 116.4% from US$ 636 million in 2009, and the market is still aggressively growing. iSuppli estimates that the market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 15 percent from 2010 to 2015.

No wonder big names including EA and Disney all tapped into this lucrative market by acquiring social game vendors Playfish and Playdom separately. With the social trends going up on hype, the leading social gaming brand Zynga which had a profit of US$ 400 million on revenue of 850 million last year was valued as much as over 10 billion, making it the second largest game vendor in terms of valuation that towering over EA and only second to Activision Blizzard, both are long-established gaming brand with a history of nearly 30(EA, founded in 1982) and 20 years (Blizzard, 1991). While Zynga which was founded in 2007 was only 4 years old. Some aggressive observers even remarked that Zynga is the role model for future gaming.

Game Developers’ Pitfalls

Inspired by Zynga’s sensational success and aroused by the fruitful market, uncountable social game initiatives sprang up in China.

For Zynga, its secret recipe of success definitely includes 1 tsp of innovative game design, some slices of smart marketing and 2 cups of fast duplication of its peers’ idea. But many tend to ignore another important but invisible factor that also affects the company’s success. Without appropriately addressing it, even innovative design or smart marketing may not paying you off.

The thing is, how to distribute your portfolios into all the other social networking platform around the world without too much hassles, by hassles, it means you need to cater for every different sns site, for different payment solutions they adopted and for different operating environments, be it browser-based, PC client, iOS or Android system. Besides, you need to keep an eye on the server loads 7X24 in case anything unexpected happens. This is usually too much for a startup to take.

Bothered by the same itches, Chinese social game developer ELEX curated its own solution and eventually turned it into an offering that aiming at helping other social game developers to avoid all these inconveniences. Hence comes the birth of XingCloud, which means smoothly floating cloud in Chinese, a Beijing-based innovational startup with an aspiration of bridging the gap between social game vendors and social networking sites worldwide.

XingCloud to the Rescue

Incubated by Innovation Works, a Beijing-based startups incubator founded by former Google head Kaifu Lee, XingCloud has raised US$ 3 million from IW, and is currently in funding talks. The Zhongguancun-based company now has a headcount of over 60 while nearly 50 of them works in the tech division. XingCloud to date offers developers with three flagship products, including cross-platform game distribution initiative, cloud servers and operating management platform.

According to the tech leader at XingCloud, leveraging its cross-platform game distribution, developers can easily have their game portfolios instantly distributed into over 100 social networking sites around the world, including Facebook in the U.S., Renren and QQ in China.

On top of worldwide circulation, another problem constantly bothers developers is, sever operating and management. As to social game startups, they’re usually ill-equipped both in terms of headcounts and servers. That’s where XingCloud to the rescue. Harnessing its cloud server, startup can take it easy on server-related issues, since XingCloud’s cloud server offering can automatically and intelligently scale up or scale down server capacity according to server loads. With cloud server at hand, game vendor can make a new game server whenever they see fit in less than 60 seconds versus more than one week if the developers taking care of everything on their own. Also, XingCloud cloud server can recover from an unsolicited disaster – such as server down – without human intervention.

Besides international circulation and intelligent cloud-based server offerings, XingCloud can also do good to developers with detailed statistics and analytics which can be served as a reference or an indicator for further improvements and redesign. For example, you’ll get to know at which game level do players quit mostly, or even have access to data refer to a single user’s in-game behaviors. Those can be leveraged for future crank up.

As Renren’s open platform attracting more users, and Tencent recently announcing its all around open strategy including QQZone, one of the largest social networking initiative in China, more and more social game developers have been crowding into the promising market. In such a highly competitive market, it seems that doing the right thing while let someone else do your chores as well as harnessing the power of cloud would be a smart choice for standing out and surviving.

Lady Gaga Kicked Out From YouTube By Uploading SMAP Program

Lady Gaga's Japan visit was a sensation, left a lot of news with celebrities including Japanese' Ophra Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, prime minister Naoto Kan and SMAP, long-time ruling boys unit.

Lady Gaga's appearance on Japanese TV was estimated 135 million dollars worth [J] if it was advertising.

Gaga is recognized as a celebrity who directly talk to her fans over social media. Japanese, both media and people chased her tweets during her stay.

What happened today is that they noticed that her uploaded video, a TV program hosted by SMAP featuring her, which she had introduced on twitter on 12th, is not watchable. The same movie was posted on Rolling Stone, too.

It was not only that. Lady Gaga's YouTube official channel has been stopped, too.

The movie was claimed by Media Interactive Inc., which is the same company who mistakenly removed YouTube movie uploaded by a popular Japanese singer Hikaru Utada before. They were her own official movies.

SMAP and its agency Jhonny's Office are well known by their hard-line portrait rights control. It is not easy to find their unofficially uploaded photos, at least on Japanese web. Lady Gaga uploading such movie and a photo over Twitter was worried by Japanese users, because if other Japanese talents did that, she/he will get hard time by that. Actually, no Japanese would post their photos of Jhonny's Office talents on the web, as they know it would be troublesome.

When SMAP sang in front of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who was visiting Japan, most Japanese media did not post a photo with SMAP, whilst Chinese media did.

I do not embed the photo of Lady Gaga and SMAP here, because I do now want to be cautioned. ;-)
