Chinese Kik-like Apps At A Glance

Ever since Kik hit a sensational success overnight, we have seen its Chinese counterparts mushrooming here with Weixin (means micro message, by Tencent), MiLiao (by Xiaomi Tech), Feidou (by Kaixin001) and Youni (by Shanda) competing against each other with pretty much the same non-thinking imaginationless features, to name a few, “free short messages” via GPRS or 3G network (you still have to pay for GPRS fee though), group messaging, social contacts based on your cellphone’s contact list which according to me is the next waterfront that every mobile apps vendor will be scrambling for, few of them are aware and fast enough to combine walkie-talkie function as well.

Let’s take a closer look at each of them. Kaixin, the once popular now struggling Chinese SNS, released its own Kik-like offering late this March. But it seems the product has been discontinued. Visiting its homepage will refer us to the homepage of Kaixin. Period.

Youni used to know as Kiki – could you be more like Kik? – and rebranded itself as Youni (means have you) later on. Youni offers its users with person to person short messages via GPRS, no group messaging feature according to its introduction on the official website. I think lots of people will be wondering, we don’t care that much if you’re copying or innovating, but if you decide on copying, could you please at least copy the whole package.

As for MiLiao, yes it’s more promising and cares enough to innovate on top of what Kik and Talkbox already offer with attractive handwriting short message function alongside (group) short messaging, voice messaging and social contacts feature. MiLiao leader is kinda hoping the company could undermine Tencent’s penguin empire (Tencent is featuring a penguin with scarf) with first-strike advantage in mobile area. MiLiao claimed over 2 million users as of this May.

Well, not likely if Tencent is also making strides and evolving even more. Tencent’s Weixin, which just released its latest iPhone app (version 2.5) couple days ago, has incorporated video messaging, LBS feature and bit sense of elastic social networking as well.

Except for what Kik and Talkbox offer, Weixin now let its users shoot and send video clips whenever they want and wherever they are. With LBS, you can locate people who’re also using Weixin right around you. The night Weixin was launched, Sina Weibo was flooded with posts raving about these new features.

Besides new functions, one more thing Tencent can leverage – the cliché is coming, but yet its true – is its huge user base. Most of Chinese people have QQ accounts, Weixin is based on these. If you want to use Weixin, the only thing you need to do is to have it downloaded and installed, then you can see how many of your QQ buddies have already used it. While Youni, MiLiao have to build their own user base gradually.

But the fight hasn’t over yet. Xiaomi Tech, the vendor of MiLiao is announcing its branded Android smart phone Xiaomi Phone on this 16th at 798 Art Zone, Beijing. It’s foreseeable Xiaomi Phone will integrate all of Xiaomi Tech’s mobile apps, MiLiao included.

The post-kik war of social contacts is just getting started.

Of Roles & Titles In Startups [First Deserve, Then Desire]

“Make me CTO”, told a startup employee to the founder/CEO.

“CTO? You joined as Engineering lead, just a few days back..what happened?” [Founder/CEO]

“See..I am the senior most technology guy in the company! And I take care of all technology stuff, so…”

“Hmmm…” [Founder/CEO]

“And frankly, I was engineering lead in my last organization as well (a big brand MNC company)…Now that this is a startup, I should be taking over a bigger role” [Startup Employee]

How many times have you been through this situation? As a founder or as an employee in a startup? That is, the need to get a ‘sexy’ title, just because you work for a startup and the importantly, nobody else is (currently) occupying that ‘title’?

Indians, in general are very particular about roles & titles (you will never find a 15+ work experience guy working as a software engineer – we actually loathe that title and people want to “move up” – i.e. team lead/project lead/managers etc.), owing to the power distance DNA embedded in us.

Note to Startup Employees

Before you ask for that title:

-Understand that you really need to deserve the title. Read the next point.

- Size of company doesn’t mean much. Title translates to capability.
If you are CTO of a small company, would you join Google as an entry-level engineer or somebody senior (after all, you were the CTO of a small startup!). Can you really handle same level of complexity (in Google/Apple) and justify the “ CTO title”? Ask yourself. It’s not about the size of operation, but it’s the capability of the person that ‘title’ should stand for.

The same applies to startup founders too, but the good (and bad) news is that you don’t have a choice. You started the fire – so keep it going (either by being the Chief Executive Officer or hiring one).

- Think of 100X bigger company and ask yourself….

what’s really the role of a CXO (or whatever title you are running after) in this 100X sized company? What does he/she goes through everyday? It’s not about the fat pay packet, but it’s about responsibilities – so think twice before you ask for a role.

- Difference between role & title

How many of us understand the difference between role and title? Of course, startups are about risks and as an early employee, you need to reap the benefit of being there and building the company from scratch? Well, that’s where the difference between responsibilities & titles lie. You could be a software engineer performing the role of an architect – so you first show that natural leadership and grow, instead of taking the reverse route.

Startups provide a blank canvas and as an employee, you should first try to make that impact and then reap the ‘title’ benefit.

Notes To Startups:

For short-term benefits (i.e. instant gratification to attract talent), please do not distribute titles. You can be creative and say “Mischief Technology Officer”, but if you giveaway titles to undeserving candidates, you are just digging your brand’s graveyard (how cool will it be to meet your CTO who doesn’t have the vision to be called a CTO?).

What’s your opinion?

Livejournal.sg to go live next week

LiveJournal, one of the most popular blogging platforms in the world, has just launched their new Singapore startpage (livejournal.sg) on August 5. The actual site will go live sometime the following week.

Popular  for its ease of use and community features, there are now some tens of thousands of blogshops in Singapore alone. LiveJournal has also been ranked by Alexa as Singapore’s 30th most popular site, making it the 3rd largest e-commerce site after Amazon and Groupon. Its Singaporean users are predominantly females aged 18 to 25.

The startpage essentially acts as a directory that picks the best content from LiveJournal users in Singapore. For instance, with the country’s National Day arriving on August 9, the site editor will pick suitable content from the blogging community to appear on the startpage. Food, fashion, and beauty content will also feature on the startpage — a reflection of Singaporean’s preoccupations.

This project is a collaboration between LiveJournal, which is owned by Russian-based SUP Media, and Tickled Media, which runs theAsianparent, a popular parenting magazine with a presence in Singapore, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines (see prior announcement). In the pipeline are similar startpages for other countries in Asia, and integrated payment systems for LiveJournal users.

Japan Digest – 5 Aug

Here you can find interesting startup news from Japan, not only from its capital, Tokyo, but also other startup hubs like Fukuoka, Kyoto, Osaka, and many more.

(1) AT&T and mobile social games company ngmoco, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DeNA Co., Ltd., announced an agreement to bring the Mobage social gaming platform to AT&T customers. Mobage will serve as a hub for AT&T Android users to discover and play games, as well as connect and communicate with other players around the world.

(2) Mig33 recently launched a developer program, which allows mobile game developers to make revenue by developing games on a platform which is compatible with Gree’s. As of this writing, 12 developers from 7 countries have been participating in the program, which may cause keener competition in developing mobile gaming apps because more developers not only in Japan but also from foreign countries will be forced to sharpen swords on the common international arena, in publishing best-selling apps.

(3) Voltage company has begun to offer “Koi ni Ochita Kaizoku Ou,” one of their popular games from the “Koibito Game” series on their official website, in an English version intended for overseas applications on iPhone and Android as “PIRATES IN LOVE”.

(4) Gakufu Camera (gakufu = music score) is an iPhone app released by music instrument vendor Kawai. The camera application lets you scan music score by camera, recognize musical notes in real-time, and play the recognized notes.

(5) The world’s biggest social game Cityville just launched in Japanese, available exclusively to the Facebook platform. This is the first time a localized version of a US Zynga game has been launched in Japan since their entry into the Japanese market.
