KDDI To Bring Android Apps To China Mobile Subscribers

Japan's second biggest telco and mobile carrier KDDI is planning to bring a set of made-in-Japan apps to Android users in China, in cooperation with China Mobile, the country's biggest telco (over 600 mobile subscribers).

Under the deal, KDDI will start offering an initial 22 apps, for example manga or games, in China Mobile's Android market as early as from the end of this month. KDDI uses apps made by a total of five Japan-based companies, i.e. Cybird, Acrodea or G-Mode.

The company says services like billing or fee collection for these app developers will be handled by Hong Kong-based DMX Technologies, a firm KDDI acquired a 51% stake in back in 2009.

The Nikkei is reporting that KDDI is only the 10th company to be given the right to sell apps in China Mobile's Android market (which has 90 million customers).

Entrepreneurs! Welcome to Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) CEO Dinner at 22nd September, Shanghai

The Chinese tech industry is developing faster than ever with massive potentials.  We see more and more startups founded by young generation working in varied sections, more hot money, more angel investors and startup incubators. China has truly become the place for entrepreneurs to be! However, we have to see that the Chinese startup ecosystem is still not that mature. Young entrepreneurs needs more valuable advices from experienced experts; money is hot but not smart still; angle investors are flying around but experienced ones are hardly to be found; incubator is good but how to effectively encourage the true Innovation is still a question.

We should welcome more Silicon Valley-based energy coming to educate and enhance the local ecosystem. So it’s great to see Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) Financial Group has taken the initials and is serious about China. At the night of September 22nd SVB Financial Group is hosting a “CEO Dinner”  at the Strip Bar, Shanghai. Together with Ken Wilcox, SVB also brings other two entrepreneurs from Europe and U.S: Jacob Hsu, CEO of Symbio, and Marc van der Chijs , Co-founder of Tudou who have successfully started and grown their business venture here. I am really honored to be invited to moderate to moderate the panel discussion.

The following topics will be discussed (but not limited to):

  • The differences of entrepreneurship between East and West

Twitter launches in five more languages

Twitter is now available in Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Hindi, Tagalog and Malay, a move which would open itself to more users in Asia. This brings the total number of languages supported to 17 (see original announcement).

Tagalog is the first language of many Filipinos, while Malay is widely spoken in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.

The launch of these five languages (well, four, since simplified and traditional Chinese are technically the same) indicates a strong demand for Twitter in Asia. Hindi is spoken by many Indians, and while Twitter is blocked in China, populations in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and much of Southeast Asia speak and write Chinese.

Entrepreneurs and social media strategists in these markets should consider monitoring  whether more native language users in their brand’s radar would pick up Twitter in the coming months. If so, then they may need to adjust their marketing strategies.

The popular micro-blogging service relies on an army of 290,000 volunteers to do the site translation. Crowdsourced translation will be available for the Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Polish and Hungarian languages soon.

To access the translations, users can simply enter the ‘settings’ page and pick from a drop-down menu the language they want their Twitter interface to appear in.

Into the young minds of Card-Y

The one Card to rule them all revolution, Card-Y, had it’s humble beginnings as a junior college Project Week assignment at Singapore’s Victoria Junior College. No, the five students didn’t get an “A” for this (booo!) but what spun out of the endeavor was a team of passionate entrepreneurs that have taken this to the doors of the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) to see if that can turn this idea into something practical for the Singaporean consumer and probably more.

Card-Y is a free smartphone app that will be available on the iPhone. The app aims to unify all your cards in your wallet, allowing for faster transactions, better organization of information and enhanced security all in a user-friendly e-wallet. Unlike Google Wallet or Isis, which co-founder Benjamin Wong admits to be their biggest competitors, Card-Y has taken further steps to ensure that their product provides more value to banks, merchants and consumers in terms of cost and time, even including a loyalty point system.

Benjamin and his team’s quest to prove that innovation can not be graded has let them to refine their idea further. They found that a normal e-wallet solution that focuses on just  making payments faster, easier and more secure for consumers can be done with current technologies but that it was highly unsustainable, un-scalable and did not show a strong business model. The team identified that an advertising approach would formulate a solution with a stronger business approach. So an e-wallet solution that provides an effective advertising platform. Benjamin broke down how the solution will service the different user base:

Banks

Problem: Banks are not efficient  in managing their card accounts and their branding or interaction efforts with the younger generation. Application for credit cards is a hassle.

What Card-Y will do:

  • Provide comprehensive information on the benefits of the credit cards
  • Persuasive-Interactive Advertising: e.g. when a user enter Sakae Sushi and does not hold a Citibank card which offers a discount, the app will prompt the user to apply for the card
  • Shorten managerial costs to apply for credit cards through online applications
  • Ability to pay bills using the iPhone (shift AXS machines to the phone)

Merchants

Problem: Ineffective advertising that is cost-intensive and labour intensive. Loyalty programs are not sticky enough.

What Card-Y will do:

We provide the statistics of consumers and allow merchants to create better loyalty programs and branding

  • Targeted advertising: pick who you want to advertise to: perhaps target junior college students who spend more than $1,000 per month
  • Specialized campaigns: buy one get one free or first 10,000 cups half price (where the scale of campaign depends on retailer)
  • Interactive-persuasive Advertising: (active: when you make a payment, it tells you that you don’t have the card and persuades you) + location-based (where it gives you more discounts in a given radius)
  • Push-updates: everytime they have a new update, how do they tell the consumers – (eg. books that are thrown away can be used again.) non-intrusive. able to cut managerial costs and access. (according to the cards that they hold, the membership cards)
  • Game dynamics: sharing the link and good deals with everyone, we give you more benefits if you share the link.

Consumers:

Problem: lack of security, slow payment, hassle of managing different card accounts and carrying them in a bulky wallet.

What Card-Y can do:

  • Chooses best payment option. (allows the system to fully utilize the system for you)
  • Location-based discounts (viewed using Augmented Reality)
  • Targeted discounts
  • Discount-sharing system
  • Game dynamics: able to gain enough achievements to get additional discounts
  • Ability to view amount of money saved using Card-Y due to discounts available etc.
  • Able to view expenses daily for the month, sync it to DropBox etc.
  • Wallets cannot be lost/data stolen on the fly as they are on the cloud
  • Cost-savings
  • Share purchased over social media
  • Ability to ask for opinions for goods on social media before buying.

That’s quite a mouthful. More importantly, is that an executable mouthful from such a young team? The team is already in talks with DBS and Zylog in hopes of building a partnership. Other discussions are also on-going with  the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (iDA) and Networks for Electronic Transfers (NETS) to see how they can fit into the near filed communication (NFC) payment systems that are currently available. The team are looking to run their pre-Alpha tests in a polytechnic to see how receptive their targeted users will be towards this new version of an e-wallet. For a group of pre-National Service Singaporean guys, this is one gutsy and dedicated venture. We’ll definitely keep an eye out for them. All the best guys!

InMobi Raises $200 Million From Softbank [Valuation of $450mn]

Mobile Ad network InMobi has raised $200 million from Japan’s Softbank. Rebranded from mKhoj, InMobi earlier raised $8mn from KPCB and Sherpalo Ventures (in 2010) and recently launched SmartPay a mobile payment service.

Though KPCB and Sherpalo aren’t participating in this round, Softbank’s investment will take place in two tranches, with $100 million this month and the rest in April next year (via).

“I hope the partnership with InMobi, a fast-growing startup with significant mobile expertise and an outstanding technology platform; will further accelerate the pace of development in the mobile Internet space globally. We believe this partnership will help Softbank become the No. 1 Internet company in Asia and I look forward to working with the InMobi team.” [Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of Softbank.]

InMobi founder, Naveen Tewari set the stage on fire at UnPluggd2 and the lucky ones who were present at the event will recall the challenges they faced while raising funds (“Indian VCs couldn’t believe that InMobi can really make it so big.”).

What’s your take on valuation of the company? Atleast $500 million?

Penthouse magazine owner to buy daily deal site JigoCity

Now, even Penthouse wants to get into the pants of your favorite Groupon clone. FriendFinder Networks, which owns the famous adult magazine, is looking to buy up JigoCity owner BDM Global Ventures for US$65 million, reported Reuters on 12th September.

JigoCity, which was started in America, operates in 20 countries worldwide, including Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and many parts of Asia. While its presence in the Singapore market is small, it claims to have a revenue of US$600,000 in July and US$1.1 mil in August. The site’s net income is unknown.

This is surely the stuff of dreams. FriendFinder owns an extensive portfolio of adult websites which includes AdultFriendFinder, NoStringsAttached.com, BDSM.com, and many more. Heck, if you’re an exhibitionist, there’s something for you too.

They also own innocuous dating websites of all stripes, including ones for Indians, Italians, Jews, gays, and yes, Christians.

According to Reuters, FriendFinder’s reason for acquiring BDM is so that they tap into markets like China and the Asia-Pacific region.

In return, JigoCity gets access to a massive user base across FriendFinder’s social networks, “some of which already operate in Asia”. And don’t laugh, it claims to have some 484 million users in over 200 countries.

What makes the deal somewhat of an oddball, though, is that JigoCity is vastly different from FriendFinder’s existing portfolio. But according to min online, BDM’s CEO Tony Bobulinski and his top executives will continue to operate JigoCity with its current brand identity, so don’t expect the website to show discounts or advertisements of the titillating variety.

JigoCity ads, however, could appear on harmless sites like ChineseFriendFinder.com and even FilipinoFriendFinder.com, although I won’t be surprised if they show up on the lucrative adult-oriented sites too. Not sure if that’s what JigoCity’s CEO has in mind though.

FriendFinder’s acquisition came soon after it suffered a bad IPO debut in May — one of the worst in recent years according to 24/7 Wall St. From the initial $10, share prices plummeted to around $3 by late August.

But this did not stop the company from betting on BDM. In fact, companies have been busy snapping up daily deal sites like Monopoly properties: The acquisition of JigoCity is just the latest in a string of buyouts and investments in the Asia-Pacific region.

Looks like it does pay to be a clone after all.

    3. 8.53 million Chinese iPhone Users Choose China Mobile Over Official Partner China Unicom

At the 2011 Summer Davos Forum, Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, one of the largest operator in the world disclosed that the mobile giant is providing service for over 8.53 million Apple iPhone users, while the company actually isn’t an official iPhone partner in mainland China.

The Beijing-based mobile operator tried to strike a deal with Apple to introduce iPhone to China’s market back in 2007, without good outcome. China Unicom, the third largest operator in China partners with Apple to offer iPhone here since late 2009. China Telecom, the second largest operator in China is also reportedly introducing iPhone 5 to China in Oct. of this year.

Too impatient to self-learn app development? Pragmatic Lab can help

There are many ways to get started if you want to build the latest and coolest iPhone app. You can:

    a) Download the SDK and mull through the documentation yourself,
    b) buy a For Dummies guide from Amazon for additional help, or
    c) beg your friend to show you the ropes.

But if the answer you want is ‘none of the above’, ring up Sidwyn Koh from The Pragmatic Lab. Sidwyn teaches iOS development for a living, and he also loves teaching, period. For S$400 (US$320), you get 8 hours of lovin’  for the Basic Course, which doesn’t require any prior programming knowledge. After completing this class, you can move on to more advanced ones.

Or, you can sign up for all three levels at one go, and shell out S$1,200 (US$960).

By the way, you need to bring your own Mac too. So if you don’t have one, you’ll have to beg, borrow, or steal it.

You must be wondering: Who is this self-important chap who’s asking for so much money for just a few hours of lessons? Here’s his resume: He created a mobile app for Seesmic, a leading social network manager, with four other developers. He also created Definition, a dictionary app for iPhone and iPad that does what it describes. And many others.

The price sounds hefty, for sure, but there’s cost involved for spending time with a master who’s willing to handhold you. And besides, you’d cut down on time wasted pouring through the documentation and getting all confused and depressed. Class sizes are also kept small (no more than 7 students) so you can ask Sidwyn as many questions as you want.

As a bonus, you get a certificate for completing a course, which you can frame up on the wall for bragging rights. Yay.

If you’re eager to get find out more and get started, do check out the website for course descriptions and other details (also read my article for some idea about where the apps world is headed).

We played with the product and must say that it’s very well thought-out and covers most of the use case, an enterprise would need. The service is available in two forms – hosted service (SAAS) and on-premise software.

Pricing of SAAS service starts from Rs. 1,000/month (goes upto 10K/month) and company has done the pricing only on the basis of storage space (all features are available otherwise across the different pricing bands).

If you are an organization that is looking for better collaboration across the team members, do give TaskTrek a spin. There are quite a few standalone products available in the market (for project management, task management etc), but very few of them provide a holistic view.

Aside, do share which software do you currently use for managing projects/tasks in your organization?
