Konami Links Social Game And Arcade Machine

This is something I was expecting to read.

Konami has launched an arcade machine linked with one of its social games [JP]. The arcade game it's called Baseball Heroes 2011 Shine Star [JP], and it's complemented with the social game Professional Baseball Dream Nine (which have about 1 million users at GREE). There is no so much details about how the connection works, but probably it will be possible to get exclusive virtual items and other elements to exchange for cards and points. The integration will take place next October 12th.

I'm a passionate of arcade games; one of the main issues of this sector is how to innovate. Memory cards, card games, connection to the internet are some of the last iterations, for sure integration with social games is the next one. I hope other developers (like Sega or Bandai Namco) can continue on this way with some of their big hits.

Of Facebook Timeline, Lifeblob And “The Art Of Moving On”

I watched the entire F8 (Facebook’s developer event) yesterday and the moment they announced Timeline, it reminded me of Lifeblob, Bangalore based startup that built on a similar concept.

Essentially, Lifeblob used to import your photos from Flickr/Facebook/Picasa accounts and organized them in timeline.

The company was acquired by Printo (Nov 2010) and while the founders have moved on, the whole FB episode reminds me of their earlier FB accusation (read: Indian Startup, Lifeblob accuses Facebook of Copying its feature).

Just to set the record straight, we have had this feature ( and a lot more ) at http://www.lifeblob.comfor over a year now and facebook has blatantly copied it. Every time you upload a photo on lifeblob, a recommendation engine not only looks at the face tags, but also the other information associated wtih your photo to show you photos that are closely related around it.So when you upload your graduation day photos, we discover other photos of your graduation day and show it next to your photo. What facebook has done is picked up this idea and launched a simple version of it that only uses face tags

And now, Facebook launches a full-fledged feature that actually brings the entire concept of Lifeblob alive (read: Lifeblob’s New Release Lets You Explore Connections Using Pictures,Your Facebook Friends get a new Life with Lifeblob app )!

Do you think Lifeblob had a better chance of making it big, if they were in Silicon Valley? After all, building a global consumer centric product from India ain’t that easy and one needs to be present in the ‘early adopter communities’ (i.e. Silicon Valley).

We ask the cofounders – Pranav and Rakesh to share their first reaction.

Rakesh Ranjan (a.k.a XP)

Firstly, I’m happy that the idea that we had, has now a chance to become “mainstream”! As I mentioned earlier, I think FB has a good chance at it, as they have *the* 2 most important parts needed to make this work — connections and photos. rakesh

Now thinking of lifeblob and this story, it’s a mixed feeling – the idea we had 4 yrs back and the fact that we couldn’t crack it at that point.  I strongly think that location matters a lot – we are talking about paradigm shift in how people interact with relations and photos online. ( If you remember about what we used to talk earlier — flickr bought the first wave with tagging, FB with face tagging and LB was trying to tag relations and everything else). So while it may not be necessarily only SV, it could be any place where people are open in sharing their life online and willing to adopt new services.

Regarding the “copying” of idea(s) — I think ideas are cheap, execution/output is what counts :) Good luck to FB!

Pranav Bhasin

The idea of connecting people through photos / videos etc is very powerful and since the interconnections can become very complex, timeline is the pranavmost natural way to allow users to interact with it. It was in 2007 that we came up with this thought and that is when we decided to leave our jobs and start lifeblob.

I think we had our moments with coverage on TechCrunch, a deal with Sony Music, access to seed funding and most importantly strong support from our investors ( SeedFund ) throughout our journey. I sometimes wonder what convinced SeedFund to take the risk that they did on our whacky idea, but now that Facebook has launched it and everyone is raving about it, we can take some credit of having the foresight to think about it and the guts to do it!

Looking back, it is always easy to say what we could have done differently and what external factors could have made a difference:

Location: As a startup, the evolution of your product is influenced to a large extent by your users. For a social product, it is all the more important to have early adopters who actively engage with it and help steer the product in the right direction. I think presence in a location like Silicon Valley enables interaction with so many like minded individuals that it cuts down the feedback cycle dramatically and helps you move much faster in the right direction.

Distribution: The problem of distribution is something that a lot of startups under-estimate and we did too! To grow an idea from zero users to a million users is significantly harder than getting an idea adopted when you already have 800 million users. For a startup, you need to first crack the chicken and the egg problem with data vs users.

Brand: Facebook has worked hard over the years to build a reputation in the social space and now whenever they launch something new, users not only accept it graciously but also rave about it. For a startup, launching the same idea is much harder because the process of building brand equity goes hand in hand with the launch and evolution of the product.

All said and done, it is certainly flattering to see the timeline launch by Facebook and given our passion for this idea, I do hope people love it! As Xp rightly said, ideas are cheap and its the execution that counts :)

Runpapa Brings Pull Based Group Buying For Cars and Bikes

Almost all daily deal / group buying sites we have seen till date have been pushing deals for low ticket size lifestyle purchases. These deals mostly rely on impulsive purchase due to the price point. There is no planned purchase as there is no predictability around the deals. We’ve had only one reasonable player, IAN invested Groffr, that is into this space of group buying for planned purchases like real estate, auto mobiles etc.. Groffr, I am told is driven a lot by offline mediums than online. Then there is also grtDeal with similar model.

Runpapa is Ahmedabad based startup applying the same pull based group buying model to Cars and Bikes, including insurance and loans for the automobiles. Pull based deal meaning you define what product you are looking discount for. If there are enough member joining that group, a Runpapa negotiator gets a deal for you.

The site has been live since May and traffic is pretty low except for a couple of spikes. Surprisingly, they have 181K Facebook fans. Runpapa is also looking to launch in US soon.

Though the model of pull based group buying is pretty good in terms of value delivered to end user but solely depending on online as a medium would be deterrent for them. Preferably, popularizing such groups on corporate internal mailing lists / bulletin boards and events would help them capture a large set for a common group in lesser time. Runpapa does claim to have a offline marketing strategy as well.

What do you think of Runpapa? How much would you wait to get a discount on your favorite car?

HTC Developing Proprietary Mobile OS; Newegg China Pulls In $109M in H1

1. HTC Confirmed Developing Proprietary Mobile OS

HTC North Asia General Manager Dong Junliang disclosed in Seoul, Korea that the company has been developing its own mobile OS. ”We’ll also strengthen our relationship with partners like Microsoft and Google”, he added.

He also mentioned that HTC has filed patent lawsuit against Apple in the U.S. and “without question we will win the case.”

HTC isn’t the only one involved in Apple’s lawsuit over Android patent issues. The iPhone maker also sued over Samsung in Europe and Asia.

It seems to some analysts that HTC’s new move is a tricky step since if its proprietary mobile OS fails to win over customers the company might get into big trouble and lose ground to Samsung, one of its biggest competitors in smartphone area.

Samsung has also developed its own mobile OS Bada and is trying to promote the OS in many areas as we wrote before.

2. Newegg China Pulls In $109M In H1, Might Seek For Investment And Go Public Independently

Newegg China CEO Chi Yongxin said during an interview that the Chinese subsidiary of Newegg pulled in $109m in the first half of this year, up 50% from a year earlier.

The company has just replaced its Chief Executive, one anonymous NewEgg China executive said that “the company’s hesitation in new strategies triggered former CEO’s resignation.”

Founded in the States in 2001 and made its inroads into China in the same year, NewEgg China has long been criticized for its “inadequate effort to expansion and localization”.

According to Chi, Newegg China is still in loss.

He also mentioned that the board’s internal deliberation suggests the possibility of introducing outside investors for Newegg China. And the site would go public independently in the future.

Chi once disclosed that Newegg US will initiate IPO process in a year or two.

China Unicom to Allow Apple iPads to Make Calls

China Unicom Research Vice President, Huang Wenliang, revealed yesterday at the Macworld Conference that they have launched an Institute for R&D for iOS products. Some projects will be just experiments and some will go to market. 6 of the most recent developments have or will soon hit the App Store.

One radical feature to be released is Woxin 1.0, a piece of downloadable software the gives iPad or iPod Touch devices to make calls. If this is the case, what is really the difference between an iPhone of an iPod Touch that can make calls? Will this cannabalize sales of iPhones because iPod Touches are cheaper? Perhaps they don’t care as long as it drives them more traffic and users.

Huang Wenliang said ”we hope to develop more outstanding APP application, and further stimulate the use of user traffic.”

EBS gets acquired by Ogone

EBS, which is the second largest payment provider in India after CCAvenues, got acquired today by Ogone Payment Services, an European company.

EBS has been a relatively new entrant to the market but has since become the second largest payment provider. EBS provides multiple acquiring banks for providing payment gateway services to offer Mastercard, Visa etc on a single platform.

Ogone Payment Services is one of the main European service providers specialised in the processing of online payments, with more than 30.000 customers in 45 countries. The company provides a range of electronic payment solutions covering a number of areas, including e-commerce, ticketing, call centres or the hotel industry.

While the amount of the acquisition is not known, this is a good pointer to the fact that payment services are supposed to take off in India – especially in the domain of mobile payments.

Also with the rapid growth of Ecommerce, payment gateways are supposed to get more traction. To quote Mr. Peter De Caluwe, CEO of Ogone Payment Services  “Only 8.4% of the Indian market is currently online but this translates to 100 million users, which makes it the fourth largest online country in the world and this is set to grow rapidly with online travel accounting for 80% of the commerce in India. Acquiring a leading company such as EBS represents a huge potential for us and our European merchants.”

How do you think this market is going to shape up after this acquisition? Do you think it was a good decision to get acquired at this juncture (when they have 20% market share) and the market is set to explode?

Social Graph : Access, Activities, Environment & Experiences

In continuation to the previous post : The Scheme of things which may have set the base to understand the usage of terms such as Identity, Relation, Context, Functional Domains, Functions, State, Reputation and Edge Devices, I intend to work towards the functions of the Access points (Edge devices), Nature of Activities and Environment of use of the social-graph in this post.

Edge Devices
To quickly summarize, edge devices are the access points or tools that are used to communicate with the digital world, be it world wide web or the social graphs. Broadly there are 3 types of edge devices today being PCs/Laptops, Tablets and Mobile. Each device has advantages and disadvantages around form factor, resolution, input functions (keyboard), nearness (always with me?), bandwidth, processing capacity, memory etc.

Nature of Activities
Lets now broadly categorize the ‘nature’ of activities that a user performs over a social graph, as follows:

  1. Heavy text content creation/updates (Initiation as well as operational)
  2. Media content updates
  3. Passive Information Consumption
  4. Active Information Consumption
  5. Interaction

Heavy text content creation: During the initiation (or the first time use of the graph) there may be Identity creation, profile updates and other such social-graph-context specific info that needs to be updated. Depending on the context of the graph, these activities may include extraction and load process (Ex:Bill-of-material) into the graph as well. Also on a ongoing basis, you may change, update, add several stateful information that is relevant to the context.

Media content updates: These can be updates of Audio, Video, Pics or other relevant media specific to context.

Passive info consumption: User may visit the social graph site based on events like a notification (friend posted something on the wall) to only consume that portion of information. Or, the user may in general check the news-feed to be in-touch with activities and statues of others through a quick browse.

Active info consumption: User actively searches for a specific profile in the hope of hire (Linkedin), or a product search to find the seller (eBay) etc. There is a active and intense engagement of user to retrieve info either in the form of discovery (looking for something) or recovery (recall what i know already exists). This requires users attention to perform the activity with satisfaction.

Interaction: Interaction may involve, chatting, tagging, commenting, likes, purchase, filling lead forms, quotations etc… (diff function across diff domains of social graph)

Environment
The most important aspect of the access points are its environment.

- PCs/laptops are typically fixed point devices used from home or work. They are fully loaded across all capabilities including larger screen, ergonomic keyboard, powerful CPU, memory, fat-pipe (bandwidth) etc. Users typically sit-upright with full attention to perform a task when working with PC. There is limited distraction and ambient noise when user works on a PC. Lets call this the sit-upright posture. Lets say the combination of the device capability and the posture is called as aexperience. Typically the consumer can perform all activities (#1-#5) with absolute ease during this experience.

- Next, Tablets are mobility devices meant to be carried around and used in environments such as conference, work, shop-floor, home, events etc. The device capabilities are typically built around info consumption with a focus towards, touch inputs, relative mid sized screens (compared to PCs) and a good processing power for gaming. Now these devices are built to be used in a relaxed manner, leaning-back on a sofa, reading a digital book, playing angry birds, taking quick short notes etc. Lets call this the lean-back posture. IMO the functions that are mostly apt for a lean-back experience is media-content-updates, passive info consumption, and some amount of active info consumption, and interactions. Not all functions of active info consumption may provide maximum utility for a lean-back experience. Also heavy text inputs or extraction-load processes are a complete no.

- Finally, Mobile phones are extreme mobility devices which have the smallest form factor, limited screen size, not so powerful processor etc. The most important aspect of this device is its always-on, always-with-me profile. Also the environments in which they are used are far wider in range than the above two device profiles. Lets hypothesize that a user who has a PC + Phone, would mostly switch to PC when in home or work. (I will keep the discussion on users who never have a PC but only a phone, separate from this post). This eliminates home/work as the major usage time of phone as a access point to engage with social graphs sites. Given this assumption, phones, almost overlap with all environments that of Tablets.

Mobiles are also majorly used in shopping areas, airports, cafes. Typically due to the limited form factor of the mobile, and the amount of ambient noise, distraction, grab-of-attention etc that happens to engage the user away from the phone, the utility of the phone is primarily built to be able to be operated with minimal attention span of the user and maybe single handedly. User typically leans-foward, quickly consumes info and gets engaged back in his environment. So lets call this theLean-forward experience.

Lets extend the context of the mobile phone profiles a bit. There are feature phones (Not so powerful, limited capability devices) and there are smart phones (A mini Tablet lets say). So the utility of each of this differs based on input capabilities as well as info consumption (based on processing power). Assuming that mobiles are used in a highly distracting environments (unless in a cafe), the nature of activities that you may perform on a mobile gets further limited to a quick status update (about where you are, what you are doing) or passive info consumption. Also only some amount of media content updates and interaction can be performed. Performing Active info seek, or heavy operational text inputs are almost bad experience from the utility-value-grid perspective here.

So the users usage behavior on accessing specific functions of the social-graph is completely dependent on the profile capabilities of the Edge-device, Environment, and the Posture (Upright, Lean-Back, Lean-forward). In effect, all these dimensions combined, drives the experience of the user which limits the maximum utility of a social-graph function for a specific combination of these dimensions.

We can conclude that the way we experience the social graph significantly differs based on the combinatorics as explained.

Here-in lies a premise to focus on either incremental-innovation to build on top of the permissible utilities of a specific experience (mobile-lean-forward) or work towards disruptive innovation on making the pain-points go away (speech-to-text for heavy input processing). That said, it is difficult to change the environment of use or the limited attention a user gets for an experience such as mobile-lean-forward.

Will leave you for now on the thoughts of how applications and domain specific social-graphs can evolve particularly around a mobile-lean-forward experience, as majority of the graph utilities are yet to emerge in this segment. Do share your opinion.
