eCommerce Startups – Stop, Look and Proceed [Insights from eBay India Census Guide]

eCommerce startups and men who complain about women’s shopping habits have a reason to be happy during this weekend (and also longer hopefully). The eBay 2011 census guide indicates that eCommerce is catching up real fast with Indians not only living in the metros but also the rural areas. The guide also indicates that women who are shopping online are on a rise like never before.

The other key findings noticed in the census guide are

  • The rural India has started to buy online more often as it is the only way that a new product reaches them soon. While rural India buys one out of the ten items being sold, it also sells one out of the twenty items which are being sold. [Hint for startups: This gives a feeling that more transactions can be made to happen in the rural India provided if the delivery of goods can be made to these areas]
  • Lots of Indians are resorting to the mobile phone for browsing, comparing and buying products. [Hint for startups: No more excuses for creating a mobile-friendly website]
  • The Indian consumer does the research online for a product irrespective of buying it online or in a store. [Hint for startups: Device ways to hook up the consumer immediately after doing the research]
  • The Indian buyer imports trendy fashionable items and hottest gadgets from the global seller. [Hint for startups: Focus on the trends in the fashion industry and also on the latest gadgets available]
  • Increase in the number of women online shoppers has accounted to the rise in the purchase of lifestyle products. [Hint for startups: There is a rising trend in the buying of lifestyle products]

Cellphones are the most traded and imported items whereas the global shopper turns to an Indian seller mostly for buying lifestyle products. clip_image002

Nokia finally has something to cheer about as it is second only to Sony in the Top Brands list. Also Delhi continues to be the eCommerce hub of India followed by Mumbai.

Electronic Gadgets are found to be the most sought by an Indian buyer as they account to almost 50% of the all the purchases made on eBay India. On an average day at eBay, while a mobile accessory sells every 3 minutes, a jewellery item is sold every 4 minutes (True, Indian women online shoppers are on a rise). eBay also claims that it has almost over two million products that are available for sale everyday on its Indian website.

TRAI, SMS and India- Dilemma, Confusion and Struggle

TRAI’s recent initiative to cap the number of SMSes a day has sounded the death knell for lots of businesses as well as social solutions. SMS is the prime mode of communication for many specific users e.g. the physically challenged. Many mobile users who are deaf start their day with a Good Morning SMS and in the course of the day, send and receive more than 300 SMSes while communicating with others. Similarly hearing-impaired students in schools and colleges have been using SMS service for their studies.

Businesses providing tracking services ( e.g. real time train timings, how driver is driving, etc), Group SMS using web are also badly hit.

SMS is an inexpensive , easy and silent mode of communication. Young India communicates extensively through SMS. Businesses use SMS as a cost effective and universally understandable communication medium. But on the flip side subscribers & businesses have also abused this mode of communication.

Political parties have also come out against the TRAI rule to gain more sympathy in the eyes of public.

“The government wishes to curb the endless and disruptive flow of messages, but instead of addressing the source of the problem, they are imposing limitations on the public. This goes against the basic rights of an individual,” Shiv Sena’s Aaditya Thackeray.

Every month, the TRAI receives some 40,000 complaints about telemarketers. Last month, it cut off 72,000 phone connections of registered telemarketers and more than 118,000 of those of unregistered firms for calling people even though they had subscribed to a do-not-call registry. Not all subscribers complain, even if they are at the receiving end.

Businesses are sending SMS or mail stating to unsubscribe from NCPR or unblock particular category, if you would like to continue our services. But aren’t these businesses asking their users to open door for Spam? We surely think so.

In fact TRAI has warned users:

“Customers are requested to be aware of such messages which are apparently based on misunderstanding of the regulations and customers already registered on NCPR are requested to not deregister,”

“Concerns have been raised that such provisions will impact flow of transactional messages such as from a bank to its customers or from Airlines to its passengers, and likewise from the schools to the students/ parents. This concern is misplaced. Under the Regulation, such messages are classified as Transactional messages [see Clause 2(ab)] and the limit of 100 SMS does not apply to the Transaction messages,”

Today businesses and subscribers both are confused and are in a dilemma. They are struggling to understand the fine prints and the technicalities of the rule and what would be cost effective alternatives.

What I recommend to TRAI is to communicate, explain and simplify the rules. It is important that the common man understands the logic behind the rules.

Baijob.com Received New Round from Baidu, Considering Adding Reputation System

Baidu has invested a new round of over RMB 100 million (more than $ 15 million) into its wholly-owned online recruiting service Baijob.com, said Li Zhenwen, Chief Exec of the company, while the site will splash RMB 20 to 30 million (US$ 3.1 to 4.6 million) on ad campaign.

Baijob.com has already received RMB 100 million from Baidu in January of this year.

One of the main causes for the generous funding is that Baijob.com removes most of the ads on its website, which means that the Beijing-based company doesn’t count on ads for revenue and needs to figure out new revenue model. To most online recruiting websites, ads on homepage contribute to half of their profit.

Introducing Social Features

According to Li, Baijob.com is considering introducing reputation system that similar to what has been employed by Taobao. With the system, companies with good reputation will be recommended and featured by the system while those with bad reputation will be removed from the site.

Baijob.com is also trying to incorporatie social features into the site to build up some kind of social connection based on its resumes. The site to date has over 1 million users.

O2O New Comer Qianpin.com Raised Over $15M

Qianpin.com, a newly-founded O2O service raised RMB hundreds of millions (US$ 15 million) from Sinobo Group. Founded by former Baidu-er Yuan Peng, the Beijing-based company is positioned as an ecommerce platform for local businesses centered around life services.

“You get me wrong if you consider us a group buying service.” Yuan emphasized, “We’re focusing on online-to-offline model whereas group buying is just the primary form of O2O. What we’re working on is a online shopping mall for local businesses without material items or logistics burden.”

Qianpin.com went online on 18th, Aug. of this year with over 300 staff in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. As of now the company has partnered with more than 1,000 local businesses to offer life services ranging from restaurants, entertaining services to beauty salon and so on.

To be honest, I just can’t help associating the site to group buying service when checking it out – btw, the homepage definitely reminds me of Dianping.com. After playing with it for a while, it left me with the impression that it is just group buying service plus coupons aggregator with a brand page to feature service provider.

Apart from deals, the site hosts a brand profile page to feature deal provider with details such as telephone number, address, introduction and so on. Isn’t Dianping major in this? I personally see slim chance for Qianpin to compete with Dianping in that realm.

The emergence of group buying in China gives rise to O2O business model. A bunch of startups have been exploring in that forefront, including several projects curated by Chinese incubator Innovation Works, Meishidaren, Jiudiandaren and Buding Coupons, to name a few.

  • I made a mistake, mishandled a simple situation that could have been done better. I guess I got carried away with the Found saga and went on to bash the wrong things regarding Asia’s Top 50 Apps voting system. No excuses. I made a mistake.

The Top 50 Apps voting system hacks left a big impression on the community, most of it being how we mishandled the whole thing from the start and let it get out of hand. And we acknowledge it. Here’s what happened:

    - One of the nominated app’s developer, Erwan, found a hack in in the voting plug-in javascript
    - He made efforts to contact us via Twitter and also email
    - We did not respond to his alert and also failed to acknowledge the problem in a blog post.

    What we should have done:
    - We should have worked with the community to solve the issue by getting in touch with Erwan or asking the developer community for help.
    - We should have alerted people of the problems so that they are aware of it.
    - We should have let people know we  were working on fixing the hack

That said, what is done is done for us. We acknowledge a number of the community members have already lost faith in the legitimacy of the awards. The only way we can regain trust and legitimacy for ourselves and the award is by taking the appropriate steps to make sure that there will be a fair outcome. Here’s what we are doing, and do give us your feedback on how we can do it better if you have one. We need your support
    - we have temporarily shut down the voting so that we can clean up the data
    - we are going to integrate Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn connect so that the voting system is more secured
    - we are going to look at all the previous votes and remove the illegitimate votes. That way, legitimate votes wont be put at a disadvantage
    - we are open to more feedback from community on how to make it better

Community building is all about communication and trust. We failed because we didn’t communicate what we were doing about the problem effectively. We failed because we, and the voting contest, lost your trust. We slipped up. It’s a good lesson for us and we are learning.

We want to make things right, and we hope that the community will help. The end goal is to bring the ecosystem forward. We may have taken a few steps backwards yesterday but we hope that it will not stop us from taking many more steps forward tomorrow. For those who have supported us, we are sorry for letting you down and thank you for your support.
