Mandarin Madness Tries to Offer Pain-free Chinese Language Learning Experience

How does language learning plus gaming sound like? Since learning a new language can be an extremely time consuming as well as frustrating experience that hold back numerous people’s dream of opening a new window to understand the world.

Among all languages, Chinese is universally recognized as one of the most difficulty one to master. MandarinMadness.com, a Chinese language learning platform combining gaming feature and Chinese learning is trying to make it easy for foreign tongues.

Founded in September of this year, the Melbourne, Australia-based startup carefully devised a series of games that challenge users to match Chinese characters with visual representations, with each progressive level increasing in speed and difficulty.

One of its co-founder said that the company’s novel language approach “mimics the learning process of children; and by combining visual and audio cues, allows anyone from any language background and any age to start rapidly learning and acquiring new vocabulary”.

According to the startup, Mandarin Madness will be offered on iPhone and Android platform soon.

“Selfy Channel” Makes Its Way To China For #1 SNS Sina Weibo

GCREST [J] has opened service of their avatar community “Selfy Channel” (USA: Tinier Me) for China’s largest SNS “Sina Weibo” [C] as “Xiaotiandi” [C] (Small World), via development and management by a major Chinese social game developer FiveMinutes Inc.

GCREST’s support base FiveMinutes will oversee development and administration of “Xiaotiandi,” and they will provide service expansion using their Chinese SNS social game management know-how.  In the same way as in the Japanese version “Selfy Channel,” you can decorate your avatar and room and enjoy communication with other users in areas within the game.  They are also planning to provide a Chinese customized version of the restaurant game “Selfy Restaurant” for “Sina Weibo.”

FiveMinutes is already working on a localized Chinese version [J] of CyberAgent’s [J] 2D virtual space “Ameba Pigg.”

Yokohama DeNA Bay Stars – DeNA(Mobage) Agrees To Purchase Pro Baseball Team

DeNA just announced [J] that it had submitted an application on acquisition of pro-baseball team Yokohama Bay Stars from current owner Tokyo Broadcasting System(TBS) group to Nippon Professional Baseball Organization (NPB). DeNA is to pay 6.5 billion yen (US$83.3 million) for 66.92% stock of the team, and will pay 3 billion yen (US$38) to NPB when approved.

DeNA's concern on pro-baseball business has been reported for months. As the deadline of purchase for the next 2012 season is coming close, DeNA seems to give up naming its flagship social gaming network service "Mobage" on the team name, as it is said that current owners opposed it (though many of Japanese team have "company" name on it).

There is no other companies raised hands, as having the pro baseball team in Japan tends to be in the red, many owner companies compensate the deficit in exchange of free promotion on sports news including public TV NHK (which usually do not show specific company names). That free appearances must be what DeNA wanted for selling Mobage to wider population, potential users, though the stock of DeNA has been falling down recently after the baseball things came up.

I expect that the company will rename itself with "Mobage" for the next 2013 season, though they did not want that even when they set the Mobage-Town's global brand as "Mobage".

What I did when I couldn’t get my hands on Siri

For all iOS lovers out there, how many of you want to get your hands on the new cool and fun Siri available on the iPhone 4S, but it would be unwise to get a brand new iPhone 4S because you just bought your brand new iPhone 4 a few months ago? Of course you could try to hack it and get Siri on your iPhone 4, but if you are not as tech savvy, you could try out Vlingo – an app which perform simple task on your mobile through voice recognition.

Why did i try out Vlingo? Simple. I wanted to be one of the cool guys to have tried Siri after hearing so much about how fun it is, but I have not had the chance to get my hands on one yet. So I chanced upon Vlingo and decided to download it and give it a try. It was actually one of the top 30 apps on the app store a few days ago.

What Vlingo can do:

  1. SMS: Text Jacky, message how are you feeling today?
  2. Email: Email Jacky, Subject Hi Message How are you today?
  3. Maps: Find Raffles City
  4. Social Update: Facebook Update today I feel good
  5. Web Search: Search e27
  6. Voice Dial: Call Jacky mobile

To improve its accuracy of identification when you speak contact names to call or text, you could grant Vlingo access to your contact for indexing when you install Vlingo. Having tried out the various features that are available, I have to admit that Vlingo was pretty fun. It could basically perform all my voice commands. It could perform my voice dial command, it could update my Facebook status, and it could perform simple emails for me. However, there were a few instances where Vlingo could not understand my voice command, especially when I am using the web search feature.

Having tried Vlingo, to be honest I was a little disappointed with its features. The amount of time that is needed for me to perform a voice command, for Vlingo to then carry out the command, I could have done it faster manually. Other than that, I would also expect Vlingo to be able to perform other tasks such as checking the weather forecast and setting a reminder for me. And it would also be totally awesome if I could set a default voice command to launch Vlingo app as opposed to me launching the app, and then giving it my voice command.

But I guess I should manage my expectation towards Vlingo because after all it is not perfect. The same applies to Siri. Techcrunch recently published an excellent article written by Jordan Crook where he said that the hype on Siri creates a lot of expectations from everyone, and that some people are disappointed when Siri could not perform some tasks such as adding contacts to the phone or launching an app. Expectation is a tricky thing.

“But Apple never said she’d be able to do that. And Siri is still in beta, technically, so there’s a good chance that she’ll be able to do much more in the coming months. But that doesn’t change my disappointment. Siri gave me hope — a feeling that we were truly jumping into the future, where a voice on a mobile computer could help me in almost any way. Not that it’s Siri’s fault, but this just isn’t the case.”

Overall, Vlingo was fun while it lasted. If you, like me, want to try out a voice recognition app and see how it works, you could give Vlingo a shot, but otherwise, grab an iPhone 4S from your friend to try the authentic Siri out. Heard its so much fun with it because of its semantic behavior.

Vlingo is also available on other mobile OS such as Android and WP7.

Sinus Operation

This contraction due to scarring is the reason why this sinus operation is only carried out very rarely and in the case of very pressing indications.  When the scar tissue grows back in the maxillary sinus it may impinge on the infraorbital nerve, causing pain for the patient which is very hard to treat.

For this reason nowadays we try as hard as possible not to disturb the mucosa and bone in the maxillary sinus.  An alternative is an endoscopic entry.  For this first an opening is punched from the mouth into the maxillary sinus with a special instrument.  The surgical instruments can then be passed through this opening.  Then the endoscope is passed into the maxillary sinus via the nose so that the operator can obtain a good overview of the sinus.

5 reasons why you should write apps for Nokia smartphones .. Now ..

I talk to a lot of people in the industry and their reaction to Nokia in smartphone ecosystem is lukewarm at best. We at Mobisy decided to focus on working with the Nokia ecosystem especially with their imminent launch of new WP7 Mango smartphone this month. Here is why ..

Early bird gets the money
Remember when iPhone SDK was launched first? Though it was limited in device support APIs, the developers who built some of the first cool APPS were the ones who became app millionaires. If you look at the Apple app store today, the competition is so much more stiff ..

Nokia Push
Nokia is still one of the leaders is smartphone industry with huge distribution especially in emerging markets. Nokia Ovi store downloads have grown as much as 10 times for our apps in past 6 months alone. Which means smartphone awareness and cheap data connections are pushing Nokia app downloads as much as any other smartphone app downloads.

Right partners
When you are a software provider, it’s always about choosing right partners. You ideally want to partner with a large company which has huge focus in your area of expertise. Nokia had the first working smartphone OS and developer ecosystem. But traditionally it is not the most developer friendly company. If you hear all the noises coming out of Nokia, that’s changing fast. I met Stephan Elop last month as part of developer meet in India and one thing that impressed me the most was their single minded focus on building smartphone developer ecosystem around their WP7 phones. I think today is the best time to partner with Nokia and Microsoft when they are just starting on this new path.

Opportunity.
All the signs point towards the fact that there will be 3 pillars in Mobile software ecosystem. iOS, Android and Nokia. From India centric perspective, Apple has shown very little interest in focusing on emerging markets where as for Nokia, India is life and death. Who will you partner with?

Ecosystem
Nokia more than Microsoft has a huge Mobile developer and publisher ecosystem built in India. They actively foster it with TV, Print ads etc. Nokia have huge developer stories of Indian developers making it big on global roadmap, this is the correct ecosystem to be part of if you are an Indian developer.

Risk
Not everything is rosy though .. in recent times Nokia has shown tremendous focus on Windows smartphone which means they are learning from past mistakes but not entirely.
I got 100s of calls in last 2 weeks alone from tele-callers regarding Nokia developer conference tomorrow, which means Nokia is just throwing away money to generate interest, this seldom works.
Nokia still has lot of legacy baggage to drop and it remains to be seen if/how Stephan Elop manages to do that over next year or so to reinvent this global leader. If that does not happen, Nokia Microsoft strategy may not benefit much to over all developer ecosystem …

What do you think?

Yuwan’s SoundPrint Technology Makes the Social TV Check-in Easier

Getting folks to check into apps is hard. But what would happen if we could automatically check into events – like TV shows – automatically? Today at TechCrunch Disrupt Beijing, a Chinese team is trying to take the check-in business into a whole new level.

Founded in September 2011, Yuwan is an application that lets TV viewers check into their favorite TV programs or even commercials and then share them on social media platforms such as Sina Weibo.

The Beijing-based startup employs an unique SoundPrint technology to record, analyze and label TV programs. That’s how the app can recognize what you’re currently watching as it “listens” to your TV set.

The Yuwan team said that television penetration in China is over 97% while TV programs-related discussions are amongst the top-five trendy topics on Chinese social media. But for a long time was no such thing in China that allowed coach potatoes to share and comment on shows they love and watch together.

[Note, the post is also co-published on TechCrunch, the video is produced by TechCrunch TV]

iBoxPay, the Square Comes With RFID Reader and Barcode Scanner

The Shanzai industry is always beyond your expectation. The idea can get copied very quick, and because you have to compete with other copies, you have to make sure you can bring something fancy in order to stand out in the market.

Recently we met iBoxPay, another Square liker from Shenzhen. Unlike Yeahka which is Shenzhen-based, iBoxPay’s product is not available in the market, yet. But, what impressed me is that the features promised on its official site are just amazing. RFID reader, Barcode Scanner, the Square-function, USBKey for secure, e-signature etc, it looks like iBoxPay is going to offer you a All-in-One solution combines with all future’s mobile payment methods. I just can not wait to check out how it will work.

Even more interesting, we also realized that the founder of iBoxPay is also the share-holder of GooApple, the Android-powered iPhone 4 clone. The founder also confirmed that iBoxPay had just closed its funding from a very famous international VC.

UCWeb Sues Tencent Over Unfair Competition

UCWeb, the Shenzen-based mobile software vendor announced today suing Tencent for unfair competition in the wake of the latter’s report claiming “Tencent Mobile Browser Eclipsed Its Competitors to Became No.1”. UCWeb has issued an open letter to its partners and users refuting Tencent’s report couple weeks ago.

Yu Yongfu, UCWeb CEO said that Tencent milked its monopoly position to menace partners and distort report.

The two companies both claimed to be the largest Chinese mobile browser vendor, by different metrics. UCWeb said that its browser’s monthly active users has recorded 167 million, which means UCWeb took over 77.67% of Chinese mobile browser market given China’s mobile browser users of 215 million.

Shenzhen-based Tencent hasn’t responded to the matter yet.

One Man’s Karaoke Box “Hitori Karaoke” Appears In Tokyo

Koshidaka, a company runs 317 karaoke shops all around Japan (and one oversea, in Korea), foretold that it would open a new category business "Hitori Karaoka"(one man's karaoka) at Kanda, Tokyo around the end of this month, November 2011.

One-man's Karaoke, corridor

Different from many other countries where Karaoke means singing in a bar in front of other people whom you do not know, mainstream Karaoke experience in Japan is to rent a so-called "box" and let your friends hear your singing. (I see resemblance with the difference between Facebook and Mixi there)

And the term "Hitori Karaoke" has been around there by people who are too shy to sing for others (Google search gives back 3 million results [J]), but still want to sing by herself/himself. The phrase sometimes had a masochistic tone, and visiting Karaoke box and asked to rent a room by oneself might be more humiliating than singing to audience.

So this new shop, having all 24 rooms are for single person, would be a cure for those stoic tao of Karaoke seekers.

According to SankeiBiz [J], those single rooms are so small then they may cause acoustic howling. The shop will rent a head-phone for free for the case.
