Mobile value added services company Handygo Technologies is planning to tie up with major telecom operators to sell nearly 2 million eBooks on the mobile through their newly launched e-book app called Rockstand.
The app, which is available on Android right now will soon be available on iPhone, Windows 8 and other operating systems like Symbian and Blackberry, Rishi Kumar Jha who heads Handygo’s m-commerce company RockASAP Retail told NBW.
The company is expected to announce partnerships with two major operators for Rockstand in a few days.
The next version will also have text to speech option, said Jha.
Rockstand has close to 1,000 books live on the app and is planning to put nearly 2 million books on the shelves by February.
To buy a book, one can click on the buy button and it deducts the amount from your mobile balance. The books are copy protected but can be read offline as well.
With nearly 25 million eBook users, India is the second largest e-book market after the United States which has 60 million users. As Internet penetration grows, this number is set to go up.
The company has also tied up with regional language publishers to offer books in languages such as Kannada, Marathi and Telugu. More than 45 publishers provide content to Rockstand.
Rockstand also wants to make magazines and cartoons interactive. “For instance if you are reading an article on Shah Rukh Khan, you can click on the magazine and see videos etc,” said Jha.
