Taiwan’s Weibao Digital Spends $2 Million, Becomes Exclusive Operator of Shenxian Zhuan

shenxian-zhuanChina’s The9 (NASDAQ:NCTY) announced this morning that Taiwan Weibao Digital has purchased the rights to be the exclusive Taiwan and Hong Kong operator of The9′s hit MMORPG game Shenxian Zhuan for $2 million.

The fantasy game, which features buxom ladies like the one pictured at right, is quite popular on the mainland, so $2 million isn’t as crazy-large a figure as it might seem for the right to operate the game in two other big culturally-Chinese gaming markets.

It’s still a big number, though. In fact, it’s the largest sum paid to date for the Taiwan operating rights of a Chinese game. The9 is understandably quite pleased, and presumably so is Taiwan Weibao Digital, who gets to be the exclusive operator of the game for the next three years. Their contract with The9 also apparently includes a minimum earnings clause, although the details of that aren’t clear.

MyFirstCheque invests in Pre Cared – a pre-used baby product startup

Seed investor, MyFirstCheque has invested in Pre Cared, a service which re-sells pre-used baby products (read our earlier coverage: Precared Enables Buying /Selling Of Used Baby Products).

PreCared has been conceptualized to re-use baby products and thus offer an economical and green option to parents. The company buys used products from parents and post them on the website for sale after cleaning and sanitizing the products. The website also offers the option of classifieds and also provides a Used-Condition rating for all the products.

As far as the target segment is concerned, the Mumbai based startup is targeting the aspiring Middle class and affluents. The categories of products offered range from Walkers to Car Seats, Prams, Toys, Cradles and Cribs etc and offers anywhere between 15-35% of the current retail price of the products depending on the product and its conditions to the sellers.

Urban lifestyle, single kid and growing consciousness about product recycling has worked in favor of the concept of reusing baby products.  Baby products are kept in excellent condition by their user and looked after with a lot of love and care. However the segment is unique as post the 1-3 year time frame the baby outgrows the product and it can’t be put to any other use and that makes it a perfect segment for recycling.

Pre Cared also has informal alliances with NGOs wherein if the parent doesn’t want to accept money for the product that he or she is selling to Pre Cared, then the money is donated on their behalf to the NGO by Pre Cared.

The company will use the funding to set up 2 more warehouses in the South and North of India for sourcing products.

This is the fourth investment of MyFirstCheque and the first in the current year, with earlier ones being in Mericar, apply2many and OfferGrid.

QnA with Precared founder, Tabrez Khan (from our earlier coverage):

Pi: How do you plan to monetize the service? Generally, the segment that is interested in buying second-hand products  (in this case) isn’t online – so how do you plan to distribute?

[Precared, Tabrez]This is not a not-for-Profit venture, We make money in the difference of selling and buying cost.Space is at a premium so most parents don’t negotiate on price, they are happy that they get paid for getting space in their house. So the difference in our buying and selling price is worth doing this business. The alliance with NGO’s is to be able to contribute. You have pointed out to my biggest challenge by asking me about my ‘Target Segment’.

Agreed that as of now ‘Used Baby Products’ is perceived by many to be a cheap option and is only for people who cannot afford them. But I am convinced that it would not be confined to that specific strata,In fact I have sold to some affluent families. The biggest concern with them is Hygiene and Trust, and we are addressing both the issues(treatment and 100% refunds).
Also many young mothers are feeling positively towards the Recycling and Contributing to society concepts. Apart from these, consider that a single kid is given a pram,a cot,a rocker,a walker,a car seat,a high chair,a playpen, and some expensive toys; then the potential savings would be anywhere between 20k to 50k and that is substantial. In fact we may encourage parents to aspire and try more different products than be restricted by budgets. Our products too are in good condition as most products are used very seldom and gently. We Indians are highly value conscious, and if provided with the comfort and style of say a 10k brand in 5k – 6k price, then we would certainly give it a try.

As for people who don’t shop online, can visit our warehouse and shop physically. We would also plan more outlets wherein we would keep very few products but provide customer with more choices online at that outlet thus addressing their concerns at less overheads for us.

Pi: How do you take care of hygiene?
[Precared, Tabrez] The Hygiene is taken care of on the guidelines of baby care centers(western countries). We give treatments with detergents, warm water, and Chlorine solution(where recommended). We also dismantle the product entirely and treat manually so that the treatment is complete.

Dish TV chief executive RC Venkateish said the company has launched a pilot project in Delhi and he expects to grab 1-1.5 million subscribers across cities in the short term through tie-ups with the cable operators. Silicon Valley’s Singularity University Offering One Chinese Innovator a $25,000 Scholarship

Silicon Valley’s Singularity University is giving one Chinese national the chance to win a program scholarship worth US$25,000 to its academy – all that’s needed is one visionary, high-tech idea that can be implemented and which will positively change the lives of people here.

That’s the key demand of the Singularity University China competition panel of judges, who’re now welcoming applications from academics, scientists, entrepreneurs, or anyone else in China who’s bubbling with innovation. The challenge orients itself around this fundamental question: What new product or service can you create, through leveraging technology, that could improve the lives of 10 million Chinese citizens within 5 years?

All submissions will be judged according to their unique use of technology, feasibility of implementation, and its ability to impact that fairly large amount of people.

The one scholarship winner will be whisked to the Silicon Valley academy – which is on the campus of the NASA Research Park – this summer, where they’ll join the ten-week 2012 Graduate Studies Program that runs from June to mid-August. At the program, he or she will take part in courses with the assembled post-grads, academics, and entrepreneurial leaders – all focused, just as was the winning idea, on getting tech to make the world better. One extended aim of Singularity’s training is that it will enable the winner to return home and foster such ideas among those with whom he/she works or studies.

The application process closes on April 1st; then finalists will be notified by the 9th, and a visionary winner will be selected on April 16th. Finalists who end up being runners up will win some useful design software.

Any interested parties can get the full details on the Singularityu.org website, and then click the ‘apply’ button.

NHN Japan’s LINE App Hits 20 Million Users – After Just 8 Months

20 million - that's the amazing number of users that LINE, a communication app made by NHN Japan, just hit. The free voice call/messenger app for iOS and Android just took eight months to reach this milestone (it was released in June last year).

LINE makes it possible for users to call or text each other for free after pulling information from the phone's contact list (other people can be added via their LINE-specific ID). As a special feature, users can exchange "stickers" (cute icons and graphics) with each other (see below). Group communication is possible, too.

NHN Japan reported 10 million users in December 2011 and 15 million users on January 27. The company says that it reached 20 million users faster than Facebook (which needed roughly 38 months), Twitter (26 months), Mixi (73 months), GREE (77 months), or Mobage (54 months).

What's interesting (apart from the unbelievable growth) is that 60% users are from outside Japan: this number makes LINE one of the most successful (internationally used) web/mobile products coming out of this country ever.

Even though NHN Japan is the local subsidiary of Korean Internet powerhouse NHN, LINE was completely designed, created and marketed out of the Tokyo office (the first version of LINE hit the App Store after six weeks of development).

NHN Japan is planning to launch LINE for computers and tablets next.

China Mobile Breaks 15 Million iPhone Users

china-mobile-logo-iphone

China Mobile (HKG:0941, NASDAQ:CHL) has been in the news recently for rather unflattering reasons (yes, China Mobile, corruption at the executive level does make you look fat), but chairman Wang Jianzhou wants to spread some good news: China Mobile has more than 15 million iPhone users.

Of course, that’s especially impressive given that China Mobile’s 3G network doesn’t support the iPhone so China Mobile iPhone users can’t get any 3G service. Although rivals China Unicom and China Telecom both offer iPhone-supporting 3G networks now, apparently millions of people just love China Mobile too much to leave it.

Of course, China Mobile isn’t planning to stay out of the iPhone game forever. According to Wang, it has been continuously in contact with Apple, and its 4G-LTE network should be friendly to future iPhones, if it ever gets off the ground. The company has been having a bit of regulatory trouble because, it seems, the Chinese government wants to further develop domestic 3G before moving on to the next technology, but China Mobile did recently expand 4G-LTE test areas to more cities and may be able to have the thing up and running in time for the iPhone 5 to come out in China (likely early 2013).
