East Ventures Gets Fashionable With Investment in Berrybenka

Women’s e-commerce can often be the hottest e-tailing ticket – and with that prospect in mind, the Indonesian fashion site Berrybenka has secured funding from East Ventures. The terms of the VC backing have not been revealed.

In an announcement issued by the startup, it said that East Ventures was attracted by “the amazing growth rate and strong business concept” of Berrybenka, which curates and sells items from relatively small and affordable Indonesian and regional clothing and shoe brands. The site started in August 2011, now has 50 brands on the site, and claims double digit monthly growth in both user numbers and revenue.

Berrybenka’s co-founders are Claudia Widjaja and Yenti Elizabeth, who recently brought on board some experienced advisors to guide them during their early-stage growth.

On today’s funding, Widjaja told the media:

I started Berrybenka in order to pursue my passion in fashion. We believe that Berrybenka can bring additional value for fashion lovers in Indonesia – and now we are very excited to have East Ventures as our partner. […] We believe that through this partnership, we will grow this website to be the leader of fashion commerce in Indonesia.

East Ventures has generally been investing in social and gaming startups, so it’ll be interesting to see if this marks a shift towards backing more e-commerce in the country.

Disclosure: TiA has also received seed funding from East Ventures

Rival Chinese Video Sites Each Land New Content Partnerships

youku vs tudou 01

Amid interesting (and somewhat controversial) numbers regarding China’s online video market, both the leading video site Youku (NYSE:YOKU) as well as perpetual number two, Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO) have recently announced new content deals.

Youku has signed a licensing agreement with global entertainment company Lionsgate (NYSE:LGF) to bring 200 titles to the Youku Movies Channel, supported by ads. Notable titles include Hotel Rwanda, Monster’s Ball, and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. Youku has previously signed deals with Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros, Dreamworks, and Paramount.

As for Tudou, it just announced that it has sold broadcasting distribution rights for self-produced drama Love Oh Dear I Do (pictured below) to Shenzhen Satellite TV and China Anhui TV.

A few months back Tudou partnered with TV Tokyo to bring more Japanese anime to its platform. The company has also previously announced intentions to produce its own animation, claiming that it wants to create content of the same standard as Pixar.

Coffee with Cofounders- How two non-geeks built and sold Pagemodo

Photo: Jakob and Thomas

Updates: Thomas contacted us with regards to a mention of their latest venture. Apparently, the product is not ready for public announcement yet and e27 will get back with another interview on it once the Danish duo are ready. Keep a look out for that!

For our Coffee with Cofounders column this week, we explore what makes cofounders hang around and work on multiple projects together. We are happy to feature Jakob Lykkegaard and Thomas Kjeldgaard of Pagemodo. After a successful exit on Pagemodo, Jakob and Thomas are moving on to their next venture together. Here’s our interview with both of them:

How did both you and your cofounder meet?
Jakob: We met trough a mutual friend in Thailand, Thomas was working with a new Facebook application and I was working with Facebook games, and it didn’t take too long before we both skipped earlier projects and started brainstorming for Pagemodo.

Thomas: I was in Bangkok and was listening to a podcast on an interview of another Danish entrepreneur in Thailand. I got in touch and went there to say hi. Jakob, whom I never met in Denmark before, was there as well, and that was how we got to know each other.

Why did both of you decided to take the plunge together?
Jakob: We both had a passion for Facebooks possibilities and could both see the vision ahead. I guess that talking in the same language in a different part of the world also connects people, as we were both fairly new in Thailand.

Thomas: The spirit was right and it felt right.

What makes a good founding team?
Jakob: It takes people that can see the same spot on the end of the road, you don’t always have to agree on exactly what street to take and you might take a few hits on the way, but as long at the vision is the same you will always end up there together and happy for the journey.

Thomas: It is really hard to tell whether someone fit as a cofounder before you work together. I would say Jakob and I were lucky in that we work together pretty easily. I would suggest trying to do a small project for fun or for a client first to see if its the right match.

What was the hardest thing on the journey working together so far, and did anyone feel like quitting at any one point of time?
Jakob: I think the hardest thing for us is that we are both business guys with no talent in programming. We know how it needs to work, can plan it and sell it, but since none of us were developers, it was difficult to figure out exactly who was responsible for what. As a result, we worked on many of the same things in the beginning.

Thomas: I dont think any of us thought of quitting but personally I did have a ‘Plan B’ if we missed. In addition to what Jakob mentioned, we had our rough time when our employee’s left (Welcome to Thailand!) and you sit back there alone with a 50 percent completed product. There was a point of time when we actually sat with Pagemodo which was 50 percent done, and the only two person left in the office was Jakob and I. However, none of us could code so we have to keep our focus right and just keep moving in such situations.

How is the startup ecosystem like in Bangkok in your opinion (in terms of talent, market potential and quality of idea)?
Jakob: While we are both very active in the community, we would still love to have it a lot bigger and organized than it is now. There is a lot of highly skilled entrepreneurs dropping by Bangkok to relax (and party) so you get the chance to meet a lot of people who holds high positions in other countries that might help you in your business. This provides one with a good network around the world, as everyone in the startup and technology space will pass through Bangkok at some point of life.

Talent wise, I would describe Bangkok as an unpolished diamond. You will find great developers here, but it takes a lot of trial and error, and networking to find the right ones. However most of them are eager to learn new development languages, so if you have one highly skilled guy, the rest will follow.

Thomas: I agree with Jakob but the startup scene is getting better and a lot want to start their own tech company. However there still is a lack of resources and most of the locals do not have a strong command in English, and this adds a barrier to the growth of the local startup community.

Any advices to entrepreneurs?
Jakob: “Keep focused and keep shipping”. In Bangkok there are a lot of things that is a lot more fun that sitting in an office. A lot will end up with lower goals than when they arrived in Bangkok, but if you can keep the passion, you can really make great things here.

Thomas: “Shoot for the moon. If you fail you’ll still land among the stars”  - Les Brown. Accept the bumps that you will get along the way and keep iterating. A lot of big companies today started out as a complete different product than it ended up being.

2-channel Founder And Affiliate Companies Gets Police Raid Around Drug-Dealers Comment Deletion

NHK [J], Asahi [J], Yomiuri [J]and others reported today that about 10 of Japan's massive anonymous bulletin board service 2-channel-related homes and offices, including its founder Hiroyuki Nishimura's house were searched by Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department from November 2011 to March 2012, this month. It turned out "according to a person in the investigation".

The police arrested a 54 yo drug dealer who tried to sell stimulant drugs on 2-channel in May 2011, and requested 2-channel to delete the related posts. However, the requests had never taken up and the posts were left in public. The purpose of the house search is explained "to present a real picture of how 2-channel is managed". Besides Nishimura, several "Sakujo-nin"(=person who does deletion) were investigated.

2-channel is known to have its servers in USA since it was founded in 1999. At the beginning of 2009, Nishimura announced on his blog that 2-channel was sold to Packet Monster Inc., which is a company registered in Singapore, likely to escape from libel and other lawsuits.

There is a procedure to file deletion request on a specific forum [J] on 2-channel. In the long 2-channel history, many people got mad on comments around them and asked the site to delete comments, but sometimes posters from the management team (the form of the organization, if any, is not disclosed well) cynic responses to tell them to follow the in-house request procedure. It is unknown that the metropolitan police followed the procedure when they asked it.

Nishimura's Twitter and blog [J] are not updated today, but it is not so strange as he usually does not tweet or blog much.

Android Market is now Google Play – combines books, music, movies and apps.

Its time to call the very popular Android Market by a new name – “Google Play”. Ever since its inception, the Android Market has grown significantly and has gone through several changes over the past one year.

What basically started off as a standalone app store, today allows users to not only purchase apps but also music, movies, books, etc. This basically gives a picture that Google finally decided to move to a bigger picture – from just Android to the cloud as a whole.

Considering that Google has actually turned the app store into a digital media hub, it seems the name change is actually a wise thing to do. It will definitely draw a lot more people who were probably being left out because of the constant Android-branding. So basically the media ecosystem that they’ve created isn’t just meant for  Android devices, but for users of all stripes.

The Official Google Blog reports:

With Google Play you can:

  • Store up to 20,000 songs for free and buy millions of new tracks
  • Download more than 450,000 Android apps and games
  • Browse the world’s largest selection of eBooks
  • Rent thousands of your favorite movies, including new releases and HD titles

Starting today, Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will become part of Google Play. But it comes with country restrictions. Read more on the Official Google Blog.

Meanwhile, check out a glimpse of Google Play:
