Now comparing taxi services becomes easier; Thanks to Ezytaxi

If you are planning a trip around cities, and don’t know where to look for a trust worthy cab service, try Ezytaxi.com. No, they do not have their own fleet of cabs but they certainly have the pool of information, and the right guidance that will help you to choose the right service that suits your need.

The website launched by Amit Srivastava, an MBA from Symbiosis (SIBM) and expert in managing multimillion USD businesses for 4 years before starting his own venture, says the concept of Ezytaxi came from his own personal experience. “I love travelling by road from one city to other. While I was living out of India for 5 yrs, on all my India trips I was hiring taxis from Delhi to Agra, Delhi To Haridwar, Mumbai to Goa, Bangalore to Tirupati, Hyderabad to Sri Salem, Delhi to Leh etc. As opposed to Intra-city services (Merucabs & Easycabs), Inter-city Taxi booking was a very cumbersome process, websites were almost never updated, and more often than not you had to call 3 numbers before you spoke to the right person. Different websites had different rates/km and kms/ day. Comparing to two operators was very difficult,” he adds.

Even after going through all the negotiation, and cracking the best price he was never really sure, what he was getting into and what were the hidden costs. He even had hygienically bad experiences where the cabs supplied were either old or dirty. ezytaxi-logo

One day he heard his friends’ brother negotiating an Innova trip around the city at 9Rs/Km, when he realized that he had been fooled all these days being charged a humongous extra. This is the point that left him thinking where the large margin between customers & operators going was, and what he could do to change the scenario. He realised that the small taxi guys had no direct way to reach customers. That’s where the seed of Ezytaxi came from. Once the potential of Ezytaxi was established he did an on-field survey in cities of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Mumbai & Pune, and spoke to a lot of taxi operators. Amit even spent 2 days in the parking area of the Taj Mahal to find out, how taxis were booked, booking multiple taxis, multiple times on multiple routes to understand typical customer experiences.

Why Ezytaxi?

And in his entire struggle to get the website right he was helped and supported by his old time friend Bipasha Bhattacharya, a Masters from Lady Sriram College. She is part time into the venture and manages communication within and outside the organisation, at the same time training the drivers on behaviour, etiquettes’ and other important factors that provide good customer service. Apart from the founders, the team also comprises of local experts who have been part of the Taxi trade for more than 10 years.

What started as an idea in the last quarter of 2009-2010, came into existence in May last year and has seen two version changes since then. Initially launched as an information providing and comparison website Ezytaxi now has a dozen or so small car operators who now drive exclusively for them.

Let’s take a look at how the website works and issues it tries to address. According to Ezytaxi, a customer makes an average of 6-7 phone calls and visits to 5-6 websites to decide and book a taxi, which is tedious and time consuming. Also a risk is always involved. You do not know what you are getting into and you are in no position to initiate an argument with the operator when your bags are packed and clock is running.

So Ezytaxi aims to standardize the offering across multiple operators, making it comparable, and allowing customer to book taxi, based on past rating and prices offered by the operator. It works like this – Go to the website, choose your too-fro destination, date of travel and type of car you want. Then choose whether you want to book a round trip or a one-way journey and click submit. Once done, the website will show searched results for you wherein you can compare different offers from taxi services and select an offer that matches your needs. Then click the booking link to precede your booking. Thereafter enter your credentials and booking details (pickup address, drop address, mobile number etc) and pay a booking advance that secures your booking. That’s it! Your cab is booked and you will get a call from the operator in an hours’ time confirming your booking. And in case your route option is not listed you can go and request a quote. Simple isn’t it?

How Ezytaxi works?

Ezytaxi is doing well and getting approximately 180 – 200 visits a day now, generating 25-40 leads per day. And conversion rates are about 10 per cent to 35 per cent per day. The going is tough but it is getting better by the day.

Here is a QnA with Amit Srivastava:

Q – Amit how do you choose taxi operators or list them. How do you rate their credibility?

A – Well, we follow stringent procedures and select only those operators who have a history of good work behind them.

We first select the route we want to operate on. After selecting the route we research the operators on that route and select top 3 based on feedback through trade(mostly through referral speaking to taxi driver). Then we approach the operators – understand the fleet size, age of fleet (we avoid more than 3 year old taxis), utilisation, and explain the Ezytaxi concept to them. The operators who agree to work with us are given 5 leads to service, and a feedback is taken from the customers. Once approved the operator is given a mechanism to communicate with us to upload their offers and whenever a booking is made through the offers uploaded it goes to that specific operator and they need to service them.

Q – On what factors do you compare different taxi services?

A – For our customers on our website we compare services on the parameters of

- Car Brand

- Car Age (make year)

- Operator rating

- Image of car (coming soon)

- Price

Q – Cabsonrent.com and taxiserviceindia.com also provide similar services. How are you different from them?

A. These services are offered by taxi companies who want to go online, where they sell services of their own cabs – more like website for a company. We exclusively focus on inter-city services, no airport drops, no marriage rentals and no local visits. We work with multiple operators and are Pan-India player allowing comparison and choice to customers. From our experience we know that looking at the sites you mentioned, customer will visit 5 more sites, before he even picks up the phone and calls them

Q – Which cities are you servicing as of now? What are the future plans?

A. We are currently serving taxis mostly in Northern India including cities of Delhi-NCR, Jaipur, Ajmer, Mussorie, Haridwar etc. Apart from these we are in Mumbai and Chennai too! We will be in Goa, Bangalore and Pune within a fortnight. Our future plans include presence on all inter-city routes (more than 200kms) where more than 100 taxis are booked per day.

Q – How do you plan to expand the website? What features do you plan to introduce?

A. We believe that the Ezytaxi as a product needs to stabilise in the current form. It should become the first port call for anyone looking at inter-city taxi in India. While there is a lot of scope to add features in the current version of Ezytaxi, we would like talk about them, when we launch them. However, to give you a glimpse we will be launching local travel and shared taxi services soon.

Q – What are your revenue models?

A.   We have multiple revenue streams which include booking fee from taxi operators on every booking, In-taxi branding & promotions, and tie –up with highway retailers and tourist town shops.

Well, then sit back, book and take a trip with Ezytaxi and let us know your experience.

No Startup Tax for now

In a major relief to startups and angel investors, government has announced a decision to defer GAAR (i.e. General Anti-Avoidance Rules) by a year.

“It has been proposed in the Finance Bill that any consideration received by a closely held company in excess of the fair market value of its shares would be taxable. Considering the concerns raised by angel investors who invest in start-up companies, I propose to provide an enabling provision in the Income Tax Act for exemption to a notified class of investors.” [Finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee]

The government earlier announced that funding startups could be classified as an income and hence taxable (read coverage of startup tax).

For now, the damage is averted, but ecosystem needs to get prepared when the startup tax ghost haunts back after a year.

Looking For a Work Space in Beijing? Check Out Garage Cafe

garage-cafe-beijing

Both Willis and I are currently in Beijing now, and we’re always on the hunt for comfortable places to work from. I occasionally work from Garage Cafe and I think it’s an ideal place for bootstrapped entrepreneurs who are visiting Beijing for short periods.

Garage Cafe is located in the Zhongguancun area, often dubbed the Silicon Valley of China. It is surrounded by the big boys within the tech and entrepreneurship scene, such as Sina, Aigo, Innovation Works, and Tencent. The cafe aims to hold up to 150 people, and plays home to mostly Chinese entrepreneurs, VCs, and angel investors who are looking for a place to get stuff done and hold meetings.

Apart from offering coffee, food, and a physical space, Garage is a place to connect like-minded individuals working on startups. During lunchtime on weekdays from 1:30 to 2:00 pm, the cafe encourages patrons to interact with one another, exchange ideas, and to build relationships. They also offer photocopying, printing, and scanning services at a minimum fee. You can even list your startup on their website or put up hiring notices on their board if you’re looking to expand. Of course, it provides free internet too.

It can be interesting to eavesdrop on conversations – not that I was doing it on purpose, but they do get a little loud sometimes – and you’ll hear familiar names as entrepreneurs get really engrossed in topics they are really passionate about. The Garage Cafe does hold a number of entrepreneurial-related events, which is good if you want to have a taste of the vibrant Chinese scene within Beijing.

If you’d like to check it out for yourself the address is below (and see here on Baidu maps). You can also follow Garage Cafe on Weibo here.

Early VC relationship helps Scalify close recent $2 million funding

Australian gaming startup, Scalify, closes AUD $ 2 million funding with Starfish Ventures to expand sales and marketing efforts.

Unlike most startups that start off with growing and gaining some traction in their business before talking to investors, the guys behind Aussie gaming startup, Scalify did the opposite.

As reported by Startupsmart, Melbourne-based gaming startup, Scalify has recently cashed in $2 million funding from Starfish Ventures. Starfish Ventures is Australia’s largest Venture Capital firm. In return for the funding, Starfish will be holding an undisclosed equity stake in Scalify.

Scalify specializes in networking technologies for multiplayer applications. Their core technology and product, Baduma Network Suite is designed for fast and efficient creation of multi-user applications, especially online games and virtual worlds. Games are hosted using peer-to-peer technology rather than rather than larger server farms, to provide maximal functionality at a lower operational cost.

The team was already talking to Starfish before they even started the company.  Founder and CEO of  Scalify says: “It’s always good to start that kind of relationship early.”

“As a start-up, if you can have an ongoing process prior to raising money and then come back to show you did what you said you’d do, that’s great validation.”

Launched in 2010 within NICTA, Australia’s Information and Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence, the company has been in stealth mode since. The Scalify team boasts a strong technical background. Thus, with the new in pour of investment, Scalify will be using it to expand its growth by focusing on sales and marketing. It is anticipated that Scalify will close deals with major games publishers before expansing into the US, UK and Asian markets.

On Starfish’s investment, Tony Glenning, Starfish investment director, comments that Scalify was strategically placed to cash in on a large and growing online gaming market.

“The tech team there have made the breakthrough, they have patents and they have the chops to do something big with this,” he says.

“We follow a number of companies within NICTA and outside. Scalify has been on our radar for some time and once they cracked the problem of peer-to-peer, it was very interesting to us.”

Starfish’s investment portfolio includes over 60 companies in the Life sciences, Cleantech and Information Technology. Apart from investing in innovative global companies, Starfish Ventures also supports development projects in Thailand by placing foreign volunteers, delivering financial aid and providing expertise and project management.

Meituan Pads its Lead in Chinese Group Buy Space

Here is another insightful monthly report on China’s group buy space from the good folks over at Dataotuan. As we noted last month, market leaders have emerged and are beginning to stand out from the crowd.

The figures for March show that Meituan has further solidified its top position, moving up to hold 17 percent of the market from the 15 percent it held the month before (see interactive chart below, Meituan in blue). 55tuan, Dianping [1], and Lashou remain just behind as the other big players. You can see the entire market breakdown in the chart below.

Dataotuan notes for the first quarter of 2012, the total revenue in the daily deal market was about 4.5 billion RMB, with the top 20 websites accounting for 95.4 percent of that total. The four leading players now account for a sizable share of this revenue, and I encourage you to check out Dataotuan’s full report for even more information on how this drama is playing out.

Rumor: Tuanbao on Verge of Bankruptcy, CEO Already Planning New Startup

Tuanbao CEO Ren Chunlei

We have had fun watching the rollercoaster ride of Chinese group buy clone Tuanbao — also known as Groupon.cn — but it appears that rollercoaster may finally be chugging into the platform and expelling its dazed passengers back onto the fairgrounds. That’s right, rumor has it Tuanbao is bankrupt. And although CEO Ren Chunlei still owes significant debts, he’s apparently planning a second startup.

This is just a rumor, but it’s not exactly hard to believe. Ren recently re-launched TuanBao as a group buy site with exclusively free offers, so the site hasn’t had any money coming in. Last we knew, Mr. Ren was searching for investment to offset this, but he was also talking crap about his old investors and saying things like “investment is poison” so it isn’t a stretch to imagine he might have failed to attract investors. And as for his reported plans to start a new startup as soon as Tuanbao goes bankrupt, well, that’s exactly what he’s said he will do if Tuanbao goes bankrupt.

Of course, Tuanbao still has significant debts to vendors and creditors. This apparently doesn’t faze Ren Chunlei, who hopes to wipe the slate clean with a bankruptcy declaration and then start the whole thing all over again.

The upside of all this is that if you want to work for a crazy person, apparently Mr. Ren is hiring. According to people close to him, the “new Tuanbao” is already looking for editors, designers, customer service staff, and more. I wouldn’t recommend it, but I sort of hope Ren does get his new startup off the ground. The rise and fall of Tuanbao has been entertaining, and even if it’s dragged his name through the mud, Ren Chunlei wants to get right back on the rollercoaster.

Draw Something hype spawns localized Asian version, Dumpling

With a twist of localized word selections, Dumpling is hoping to capitalize on the recent Draw Something hype and be the Asian word game app.

Remember Draw Something? Their cool exit to Zynga sent a wave of motivation to many startups and mobile application developers. While the acquisition boosted Zynga’s Daily User Traffic Up By 25%, a recent report showed that Draw Something lost three million players in a single month, and this raises the question of whether is this the end of yet another mobile app?

Of course, following up with the successful exit of Draw Something, Dumpling, with an added library of words which relates more to the Asian market, plans to be the Draw Something for Asia. Quoting Clarence, one of the founders of the app:

“We created a version of Draw Something with fewer repeating words, 2-4 players per game, and the ability to create your own colors. We think we could appeal to those in Asia who like Draw Something but prefer something with localized words. We also offer words tailored for different countries. For Japan, we have words like domburi, soba, Akira, Tokyo, and Ichiro. For Korea, we have words like Hyori, Super Junior, bulgogi, won, jeogori, paduk, and Seoul. For China, we have words like durian, Andy Lau, and chicken feet. Although currently there are no Singaporean words, but we can very quickly add them if there is demand from users.”

What is new for Dumpling is that there are random opponents enabled and you can choose to play against players beyond your social circles. While this can be a good strategy for initial user acquisition, whether or not the app picks up the success of Draw Something is still anyone’s best guess. So feel free to download the app and let us know what you think. The download link to the app is available here.
