6 Must-Read Tech Stories in China This Week

Social media! Cash! Bribery! No, we’re not trying to bribe you to follow us on social media – though we’re delighted if you do – and instead we’re giving you our weekly round-up of the hottest tech stories that happened in China these past seven days:

1. Report suggests China’s web censorship not aimed at suppressing criticism of authorities

The title reflects the common perception worldwide about what gets so many articles, blogs, and Weibo tweets deleted each week – but the real cause and motivation is a bit more complex than that.

2. Hudong, China’s Wikipedia, raises $50 million in funding

With 6.4 million articles to date, Hudong.com – which is run as a for-profit company, not a charity – recently got tapped by Microsoft to help improve Bing’s Chinese search results. And now it has wrapped up its biggest-ever funding round.

3. Microsft confirms Sina Weibo integration in Windows 8

When Windows 8 goes gold later this year, Chinese users will find that support for Sina Weibo – the country’s hottest Twitter-esque service – is baked right in. This will be especially evident in the upcoming People app in Windows 8.

4. Apple highlights new Chinese features in WWDC keynote

Sina Weibo is getting some loving from the other side of the OS divide as well, as Apple detailed a number of China-specific features in the upcoming iOS 6 (for mobile) and Mountain Lion (for desktops)…

5. Here’s Apple’s Siri speaking Chinese [screenshots & video]

…Not least of these new features is the fact that Siri, Apple’s smart and sassy voice assistant, can now speak Chinese – both Mandarin and Cantonese.

6. Huawei, ZTE execs sentenced to 10 years for corruption in Algeria

Africa has been a big part of the global expansion of Chinese tech – especially for telecoms companies Huawei and ZTE. But two Chinese men attempting to bribe staffers at Algérie Télécom has turned into an international incident.

That’s all for this week, folks! For our full spread of China coverage, you can subscribe to our China RSS.

mig33 and RIM partner for the first time to expand their user base

e27 - mig33 – BlackBerry 9220 Challenge: "Nice to mig you"

mig33 & BlackBerry 9220 Challenge: "Nice to mig you"

Dubbed as the world’s largest mobile and web community, mig33 establishes their first ever strategic partnership with Research In Motion (RIM) to grow its current members of 65 million in which 33 millions users are Indonesians.

Now BlackBerry users can find and would be able to install mig33 app in its app store,BlackBerry AppWorld.

In order to promote and create the buzz amongst users, a two weeks celebration starting July 1 to July 15 will be rolled out in four cities in Indonesia – Pekanbaru, Banjarmasin, Cirebon and Madura. These are the top four cities where Blackberry users reside.

“Overall campaign objective is to celebrate the expansion of platform into BlackBerry, which is an important platform for our fanatical users in Indonesia,” says mig33 CEO and Founder, Steven Goh.

RIM will be leverageing on ‘mig33 – BlackBerry 9220 Challenge’ as the event to promote their “affordable” devices which was launched earlier this year – the BlackBerry Jazz 9220.

Accounting for nearly 50 percent of total mig33 users worldwide, most of Indonesians that rejoice the mobile social entertainment services from their feature phone live in rural regions of the country.

This tie-up will help Canadian handset manufacturer expand their geographical expansion by tapping in new field besides urban areas in which there are approximately 12 million BlackBerrians. As one RIM executive mentioned, “mig33 has built one of the emerging world’s richest, most engaging mobile experiences, and today offers RIM a route to millions of mobile users – in markets that offer more growth potential than those targeted by larger, more mainstream, and less mobile services.”

During his Jakarta visit with then Business Development Vice President Chris Chandler, Steven revealed the fact that they had strong presence in Indonesia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. This is pretty similar with RIM targeted countries, which contribute the biggest share. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if new products or services were to be launched in these respective countries.

He continues to add that “[mig33] will have plenty of offline meet-up and gathering in Indonesia this year as their highest priority is on user engagement and user base expansion. The team led by Kiki Rizki will be the busiest team among counterparts in other countries where [mig33] have their grip on.”

To encourage number of participants involved and increase the level of engagement, a crowdsourcing activity has been set-up. Miglovers across the archipelago are invited to send their best initiatives and ideas on how the event should be.

The best idea selected will get the sponsorship and the winning community will execute their ideas on selected cities. There is also an online quiz provided by @blackberryid on mig33’s miniblog. A lucky participant will also get a BlackBerry Jazz as the prize.

PlayMoolah launches Coin Catcher, its first iPad app

PlayMoolah, a Singapore-based startup specializing in financial education for kids, has launched its first iPad app, a game called Coin Catcher.

It teaches children about wants versus needs and identifying US coins. Accelerometer-based controls are used to test both cognition and dexterity in over 50 levels.

The launch was announced in a blog post.

PlayMoolah is a high-profile startup that publicly unveiled their web-based money management game for kids recently on 18th April, 2012. It has won a couple of competitions, most notably the Echelon 2011 Launchpad, and also the Innotribe Challenge in Singapore.

According to Forbes, they have raised a seed round from a group of angel investors in US and Singapore.

The idea for Coin Catcher was inspired by a moment when co-founder Tan Min Xuan discovered that young kids thought that Dimes (10 cents) were worth less than Nickels (5 cents) simply because they were smaller in size.

Since it was difficult to explain the difference between the value and the size of the coins, she thought that learning the concepts through gameplay would be much easier for the kids. The idea soon led to the development of Coin Catcher.

Otaku Social Matching Service “Otakuma” Reincarnated As “Ultema”

C. S. T. Entertainment [J] has announced that they will be closing their specialized Otaku (nerd) social matching service Otakuma [J] as of May 26th.

“Otakuma” is C.S.T. Entertainment’s first shot at developing a social matching service which began in 2009.  At first it bathed in the limelight as a matching service specialized for otaku and got quite a buzz in the media, but as the years passed, the SNS stream changed to a timeline system as many requests for such a structure and way of thinking began pouring in.  After that they began to initiate their branding as a reinvented system with multiple hobbies and preferences, and they developed ULTEMA, [J] a new social matching service targeted towards all hobbies and interests.  From now on, Otakuma’s service will be integrated with ULTEMA.

ULTEMA registers up to 72 “All Hobbies / Preferences,” and is a matching service that automatically calculates compatibility with other users.  The matching ratio can calulate up to an order of up 10 decimal points.  The official service is planned to begin from May 27th.

German cloud-based service, doo.net, announces beta launch and series A funding of US$10million

doo.net raises US$10million dollar funding and launches open beta, automating file organization for all.

Germany-based doo.net, have just secured a series A funding, bringing in an investment total of US$10 million, allowing them to launch their open-beta yesterday. The round was led by Target Partners, who join DuMont Venture, e42 Ventures and prominent angel investors, including Lars Hinrichs, founder of Xing and HackFwd, and Professor Dr. Dres. h.c. Hermann Simon, the Simon-Kucher & Partners founder and chairman who’s been dubbed “the Peter Drucker of Europe.”

So what is doo.net? doo.net claims to be the first cloud-based service that collects documents from all sources, intelligently organizes and stores them in a single, secure place. You might ask, what differentiates doo.net with other cloud based storage services such as Google Drive and DropBox. Unlike its other competitors, with doo.net’s native Apps, documents will become self-organized and accessible on all relevant platforms in a readily available alternative to the paper document. They are easier than ever to find, work with, and share with family, friends and colleagues. “With doo.net, we remove clutter while helping you make sense of your documents,” says doo.net’s co-founder and CEO Frank Thelen.

According to the press release, doo.net automatically collects documents from your hard drive as well as from online services such as your email account or Google Docs. The documents are then automatically organized through intelligent algorithms that use text recognition to identify and assign keywords, which are attached to the documents as tags. Once tagged, doo.net organizes the documents by such tag categories as people, organization, place, and document type, making your documents a cinch to locate.

“The proliferation of Apps, devices and communications tools has exponentially increased the number of digital documents a consumer has to handle; and that doesn’t even take into account all the paper-based documents they are still managing,” said Olaf Jacobi, Partner at Target Partners and newly-appointed board member at doo.net. “With doo.net, there is now a single solution for organizing this important information. It is this market positioning, backed up by proven technology and an experienced team, that inspired us to invest in the company.”

The team has a solid experience backing them up. Founders Frank Thelen, Marc Sieberger and Alex Koch have a proven track record of creating disruptive businesses in industries with established, dominant companies and designing innovative products and services inspired by their own personal challenges. Thelen, a perpetual list maker who co-created the Wunderlist productivity management tool, came up with the idea of doo.net in response to his wife prodding him over the growing stacks of unpaid paper invoices collecting on his desk. His response: start a company that aimed to not only make paper documents a thing of the past, but one that organized and easily located and secured all of his documents.

The service launches its beta version with the Apps for OS X and Windows 8 Metro. Other Apps for iOS, Android and Windows will be available in the coming months. doo is free and available to everyone at www.doo.net. For cloud-based storage with backup and syncing, a “freemium”-pricing model applies. For more details: www.doo.net/pricing.

Government announces removal of Multi-level TDS on Software Products: Here is what it means to you

We earlier covered that the government was mulling removal of multi-level TDS on software product and the good news is that the government has announced removal of TDS (tax deduction at source) obligation at each level of the software distribution chain (notified vide NOTIFICATION NO. 21/2012 [F.No.142/10/2012-SO(TPL)] S.O. 1323(E), DATED 13-6-2012.).

So what does this means to software product companies? Naveen from eLagaan shares details:

Generally in the distribution chain the margins used to vary from 2%-30% or so, but with TDS in place, this margin was completely eroded as TDS was deducted on the whole amount of software. Now the distributors can get their margins on sale of software and need not wait till filing of returns and claim of refund from IT Department.

This will be helpful for persons involved in multiple level of distribution for a software. This will not help software developers/ companies who have designed this, neither any customized software(s). Companies like Tally, Anti Virus companies, MS Office etc. who have several tier distribution channel will have better case to push their products among distributors.
