Cool New Karaoke App for iPhone Takes China By Storm

In a way, it’s amazing there wasn’t a good karaoke app for Chinese iPhone users years ago. After all, the KTV (China’s term for karaoke) experience is a big part of the entertainment scene in China. But Chen Hua, the man behind ‘Chang Ba,’ an iPhone KTV app that’s growing swiftly in popularity, is probably not too upset that no one beat him to the punch.

Chen (pictured below) has actually been working with his team on the app for 18 months now, but the app’s recent launch has been met with incredible demand: nearly a million downloads over the first twenty days, according to Chen. He revealed this during an extensive interview with Sina Tech, but for those who don’t read Chinese, we thought it might be worth sharing some of the highlights.

Chen isn’t a newcomer to the world of startups, having launched a failed coupon site before beginning work on Chang Ba. There were a number of reasons for its failure, but one that any Chinese startup might do well to heed is that Chen says he was overpowered by the big companies in the internet business. “Competition in the PC internet market is too fierce, and the big companies control the flow of traffic,” he told Sina Tech.

Chen also shed some light on how he and his team came to make a karaoke app:

At that time, we felt no one was doing anything with voices on mobile. At first, we wanted to make an app where users created their own content, like recording themselves telling stories. But we found that Chinese users weren’t good at creating their own content. Only a few people could create their own stories or songs, but everyone can sing a few songs.

It turns out Chen wasn’t wrong. The app has nearly a million downloads, is in the top 5 in its category on iTunes, and Chen says they’ve barely done any promotion for it. “We don’t need to do any special promotion,” Chen said, the app has spread via word of mouth. While there is a neat karaoke web app made by a Chinese startup, clearly that other company made the major mistake of not taking it onto people’s smartphones.

With regard to copyright issues, Chen says his company is aware of them and striving to respect copyright law, which is why the current selection of songs on Chang Ba is so limited (just over 1,000). But the company’s focus over the next two years will be to buy the rights to more songs now that the app is seeing some success.

Finally, Sina Tech asked Chen the question “every [Chinese] investor is going to ask.” Are you worried about China’s web giant, Tencent, copying your product? Chen responded:

Every startup gets asked this question, but the only answer is whether or not you’ve made your own product well. If you haven’t made your own product well, then what’s the use in paying attention to others? Is your product the best one in China? Is your team’s ability to execute better than anyone else’s? Whether or not you’re successful depends on you, not others.

Chen finished: “Every failed company is because you didn’t do [the product] well enough or you made a mistake, not because other people were competing with you.”

The ‘Chang Ba’ app is free in the iTunes App Store.

With its new Commerce app, Indonesian Bhinneka mobile shopping gets easier

The rising number of people going online with their mobile devices has been identified by one of the biggest e-commerce companies in Indonesia Bhinneka.com as their main reason for introducing their Android app last week.

As part of their birthday celebration,‘Commerce App’ was released and has 120 million Indonesian mobile phone users as the captive market.

“We see that Internet trend in the country is growing rapidly. It makes us very optimistic in saying that our apps will make it easier for the users to purchase their desired products online through mobile devices,” CEO and Founder PT. Bhinneka Mentari Dimensi Hendrik Tio said during the launch.

The e-retailer founded thirteen years ago is a few dotcommers that has survived since the early days of the nation’s internet boom. US$1.1million was allocated for 2.5 months development, design, equipment, and marketing fund for the several apps developed, which can be downloaded without any charge.

As the mobile commerce era draws closer, we are beginning to purchase items with increasing ease and convenience. Tio continues to mentioned that “all features in the website are accessible within this app with simplified and more user-friendly user interfaces.”

Together with the announcement of aforementioned app, the other two apps ‘Tarif Kirim’ and ‘Potret Hantu’ were also officially highlighted to public. By utilizing Android’s Tarif Kirim, users will be able to obtain shipping rates information whenever they want to send their stuff to destination address.

Targeting amateur photographers, ‘Potret Hantu’ is basically a JME-based game developed by incorporation with Nikon and Agate Studio that is ported to run over Windows Phone and Symbian ecosystems.

Multiply Indonesia Lets You Form a Virtual Queue for the Newest Gadgets

Good news for gadget lovers out there as Multiply Indonesia recently announced its new feature, the Virtual Queue. This offers the potential solution to the few who feel so strongly about owning the latest products and gadgets that they are willing to fight their way through a long queue to do just that.

Multiply’s Virtual Queue, whose concept and development was wholly done by the local team in Indonesia, aims to bring a safe queueing system to its e-commerce customers. Now online shoppers can now take their spot in the queue in the comfort of their home, or just about anywhere with their phone, computer, or tablet. The Virtual Queue feature has been used so far in two promotional programs on Multiply: one involving Samsung, and the Multiply.com SHOPFEST.

Get In Line, No Queue-Jumping!

To access the Virtual Queue, users need a Facebook account to login to Multiply. Then, they will choose between two queue options. First is the “Fun Virtual Queue.” Here, users can gain access to the lowest product price by earning points. Points are earned by playing games and by sharing their activity on Facebook or Twitter. Some might say that that sounds like a lot of hassle.

Second is the “VIP Lounge.” This is aimed at users who are willing to spend a few more dimes from their pocket. Users can purchase a VIP Lounge “ticket” to enter, and with it they are guaranteed to get their desired product. Even though this is a costlier option, Multiply insists that the price would still be cheaper than the item’s market value.

I feel that the program definitely could solve and avoid a lot of distress for many gadget fans out there. However, product launches nowadays are not only used to get the item into consumers’ hands, but also to create media hype. With long lines visible to the public, companies can easily create the attention needed to generate buzz in the media as well as passers-by. Perhaps the virtual queue system for e-commerce sites can continue the drama of this, as brands will be able to say, “Hey, we have 1,000 people in a virtual queue for our new gadget!”

Hastify is a service that aims to let your favorite merchant do so in just a few simple steps. Hastify creates a simple mobile-optimized online menu for each food and beverage establishment using their service and provides them with all the necessary services required to take orders online. Currently, Hastify’s customers are Munch and SOHO Coffee. Interested merchants can currently sign up with Hastify for a special offer free trial of their services. How receptive would merchants be towards Hastify’s services? For one, having a pre-order service like Hastify would really help in inventory and resource planning. Knowing when the bulk of your orders are coming in and being able to plan beforehand and prepare would allow these merchants to provide better service. For the customer, Hastify’s service is somewhat akin to that of Disney’s FASTPASS service, allowing them to skip the queueing and preparation time for a quick pick-up.

Flipboard for Android ‘China Edition’ Launches, Comes to 2 Startup App Stores

Here’s another milestone for Flipboard in China, with the official launch today of Flipboard for Android ‘China Edition.’ It comes in partnership with the startup Android app stores Wandoujia and AppChina, which have been selected as the official distributors of the Chinese localized version of Flipboard for Android. The new app comes with lots of Chinese news and entertainment content, and supports sharing and syncing to two big social networks here: Sina Weibo and Renren.

This Chinese version of Flipboard can be downloaded right now from Wandoujia.com on this special page (not yet live); and it’s here on AppChina as well. Like all of Flipboard’s moves in the country, this launch is being overseen by the U.S. company’s product manager for China, Alvin Tse. This new version will be on the Google Play store too.

Plus, to mark this event, the indie app store has bestowed upon Flipboard the “Wandoujia design award” in recognition of the sexy, slidey UI that has made the app a global hit. A Wandoujia representative, speaking to TiA over the weekend, said the startup team is expecting an extra “tens of thousands of app downloads a day” via this special promotion alone – aside from all the regular downloads that it’ll get on Wandoujia. The site’s co-founder, Wang Junyu, added:

Wandoujia and Flipboard both strive for simplicity and elegance. We hope the partnership will promote the value of design among Android apps in China.

Amen to that. As an Android user – on the newest 4.0 – I still have occasion to facepalm when I see a Chinese (or overseas) app that looks like it was coded with v1.5 in mind.

This local launch comes less than a week after Flipboard first hit the Android platform. Before this, its iPhone app came to China in March this year, following in the wake of the iPad ‘China Edition’ that came into life last December.

The deal is a coup for the Wandoujia, which is one of many third-party Android app stores operating in China from web companies both big and small. It capitalises on the fact that a great many Android users here prefer to avoid Google Play and instead use such independent stores, or just download the ‘.apk’ files from around the Chinese web as and when needed. Wandoujia also has an iTunes-like syncing app for Windows and Mac, giving Chinese Android users the missing sync that Google has never provided.

As for AppChina, it’s backed by the Innovation Works incubator, and wrapped up some major series A funding earlier this year.

Here’s a couple of promo shots of the Flipboard for Android ‘China Edition’ in action:
