Offline price comparison service, Pricebaba launches in Delhi (NCR) and Pune; partners with Innoz

Mumbai based Pricebaba, a location based search engine which collates information from offline retailers for mobile phones and tablets, has extended its services to the Delhi and Pune. With this extension, Pricebaba enables consumers in 5 cities to hunt  for bargains on mobile phones (across 26 manufacturers) and tablet devices in their vicinity over 350 shops, the company said in a statement.

In terms of traction, PriceBaba’s smartly done Kaju Katli campaign (i.e. urging Google to name the next version of Android to Kaju Katli, following Jelly Bean/ICS etc) has gotten them a lot of traffic and founder, Annkur Agarwal shares that the traffic has been increasing steadily (grew 100% from August to September). The team expects traffic to reach million uniques by next year September.

Pricebaba has also partnered with mobile search engine firm Innoz,  so that users can get services over sms. In April this year, Innoz had crossed the 1 million SMS searches a day and served over 35 million queries a month from Indian users, growing at around 1,000% a year.

Earlier, in May 2010 when we have profiled Pricebaba, it was offering services only in Mumbai. In addition to aggregating information from retailers it also recommends stores including price history tool that highlights the price fluctuations for a given mobile phone.

From our earlier conversation with Ankur Aggarwal, Founder, Pricebaba:

Pi: How are you collating pricing info from local retailers? What’s the ‘guarantee’ that this is the lowest price at which retailer can offer the product (or is it still open for bargaining)?
We do not want to just collect rates from the retailer and push it to consumers, that opens up the system to being gamed and controlled by the retailers (remember retailers quoting less than cost price on similar sites some years back?). But given our retail backgrounds we are working with the supply chain to get the best bargains to consumers. Can some retailers beat that price? Yes. But for vast majority of the users, they would benefit from the guidance we give.
At the same time, we are busy building solutions that would address the friction you pointed.

Pi:  What’s the refresh frequency of price list?
More than once a week. At times before the market knows about the price change. But not all prices change every week / day.

Pi: What’s the monetization model?
Many avenues. But we want to engage the users and then explore those channels over time. We need to carefully craft our model, we cannot afford to lose the trust of the users. Quite search engine like dilemma there!

Indonesia’s House of Representatives Shows Support For Telkomsel in “Bankruptcy” Case

Commission I of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) says it supports the PT Telkomsel appeal in the bankruptcy ruling that was brought about by the PT Prima Jaya Informatika case. The support was expressed in a hearing which was organized by authorities in the capital yesterday.

A member of Commision I of the DPR from the PDI-P Party Faction, Maruarar Sirait, asked the government to maintain Telkomsel as assets that are vital to the state. A Demokrat Party Faction member, Roy Suryo, showed the same support for Telkomsel, saying to Harian Seputar Indonesia that the case is strange and unreasonable, causing the nation’s biggest telco to be declared bankrupt over a relatively small amount of disputed money. Roy questioned:

Who are the people behind this PT Prima? Who is not eligible under the MoU between Telkomsel and PT Prima?

In contrast, the Golkar Party Faction’s, Enggartiasto Lukita, said to Kompas.com that Telkomsel’s board of directors was being arrogant by thinking that this was a small case. PDI-P Party Faction’s Evita Nursanty also shared the same opinion, and said she suspected Telkomsel assigned junior staff and a team of lawyers to the case who were not skilled enough to deal with a lawsuit – causing the company to lose in court and be hit with the “bankrupt” ruling.

President director of Telkomsel, Alex J Sinaga, asked Commission I to give attention and support to Telkomsel to get justice according to the law. Alex explained that the support is needed in order to carry out Telkomsel’s strategic role as a major telco in the nation.

EFF: As Cybercrime Act is Passed, It’s “A Dark Day for the Philippines”

Twitter user @RADforthewin protests and satirizes the new Act.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has been covering the Philippines’ Cybercrime Prevention Act very closely, concerned about how the extent of its clampdown on libel will impede free speech. And now that it has been passed into law (on October 3rd), the EFF pronounces it “a dark day” for the country and its net freedom. The group explains:

In addition to criminalizing online libel, Section 19 of the Act would also allow the country’s Department of Justice to block access to “computer data” that is in violation of the Act; in other words, a website hosting criminally libelous speech could be shut down without a court order.

Activists in the Philippines say that the Act is unconstitutional, and will take their appeal to the nation’s Supreme Court. Many netizens in the Philippines are dubbing it “Cyber Martial Law” and are using the Twitter hashtag #NoToCybercrimeLaw (pictured) to raise awareness and protest it.

Classbox Is the Social Course Calendar for College Students

Classbox is an mobile application developed for college students to easily check their course calendar and connect with others who are attending or interested in the same courses.

Classbox has collected course information from about 3,000 universities in China. After input basic educational information, such as your university, faculty and time of enrollment, you can choose your own classes out of curriculum information and your personal course calendar can be generated. It is a very handy tool for college students as with Classbox it’s quite convenient for them to check class information, including lecturer, time and place etc. Of course, it can also serve as a reminder and a notebook to make sure you won’t be late for the classes and take note. Classbox also comes with social networking features. Users can see other registered classmates who have taken the same courses. They can send them friend requests, even chat with them online.

It’s quite a smart idea to develop applications for campus students as more and more students have their own smart phones.  Classbox is developed by the team of Jihua.fm which aims at events and activities sharing. Jihua.fm encourages users to share activities you participate or discover and to make friends during participation. But after running for a period, the team found it only gains popularity in IT and startups circles. So after the brainstorm with the team, Classbox took shape, an app targeting at students’ activities.

The team behind Classbox has only four staff, including co-founders Li Tianfang and Wang Ran. Li Tianfang used to be a software engineer in Microsoft, and then entered a Silicon Valley startup and later Innovation Works. Before Wang Ran joined Jihua.fm, he was COO of Buding.cn (an e-coupon mobile platform), one project also invested by Innovation Works.

According to Li Tianfang, this application has gained 120,000 registered users from roughly 2,000 universities in just 10 days after launching without any promo activities. The startup was funded by Infinity Venture Partners, and now is seeking a new round of funding.

OuterEdit: From Online Collaborative Works of Art to Sharp T-Shirt Designs

outer-edit-logo

The internet has impacted out lives in a number of different ways, but its function as a collaborative space is one of the most exciting, bringing together great minds over great distances. This advancement has touched the art community as well. And one young startup out of Singapore, OuterEdit, is a good example of what kind of amazing things can happen when artists meet online to work on projects together.

We spoke to OuterEdit’s Ryan Tan to find out more about how how this collaborative design process works, and how it all got started.

What exactly is OuterEdit?

Ryan: OuterEdit is a new online graphic apparel company, but one with an approach to graphic design that is fundamentally different. We essentially work with the world’s top budding creative people to make killer artwork for T-shirts through the world’s only live and online, five-way graphic art/design collaboration format we call the ‘O/E Collab’.

Through the way we curate the O/E Collabs, make t-shirts, manage the store and connect with our audiences, we aim to grant them a sneak peek into the inner-dynamics of the creative black box and truly celebrate the creative faces and the craft behind the names in graphic design. OuterEdit values the essence of individual creativity and craft within the O/E Collab and treats it as an integral element within the final product offering.

[…] Within the last 2.5 months, we are pushing close to 1000 registered users on OuterEdit.com. […] And we’ve just past 6,500 fans on our Facebook page which is huge for us.

Who are the founders?

OUTEREDIT ™ - Power of eye-082751

OuterEdit Shop

Ryan: The founders of OuterEdit are the odd sort of guys who are constantly curious over how and why things work, where they were derived from, and by whom. We believe that through this, people gain a higher level of understanding and appreciation, tend to ascribe greater value to things, and hopefully inspire creators to make more meaningful products.

When applying these thoughts to T-shirts, Clive and I felt they were only getting a mere fraction of the story and with the combined pennies in their pockets, decided to rebuild the idea of an online T-shirt store by focusing on the notion of collaborations, and properly celebrating the creative faces and processes behind the names of graphic design.

What inspired you guys to create OuterEdit?

Ryan: The OuterEdit concept was actually derived from an idea to connect some of the best creative minds around the world through collaborations to create exciting things together.

We were fascinated by the notion of global creative interconnectedness – how technology these days makes this even more achievable – and the value it can drive when harnessed and applied to a specific challenge or brief. We work with five designers at a time. Some say too many cooks spoil the broth, but we say synergy in graphic art and design through collaborations keeps things fresh, unpredictable and unique.

We started out with the desire to make a real positive impact on the local creative scene – but we later figured that one of the best ways to showcase local creatives was to have them collaborate with internationals (and vice versa) on a platform thats online, well-designed and truly accessible to the world. Profiling is big on our agenda – we make sure this trickles down to the way we apply winning collaborative artwork to our T-shirts, and how all collab creatives are profiled as part of the end product to our consumers.

So how does the collaborative process work exactly?

Ryan: Top notch creatives from around the globe are invited to take part in their very own O/E Collab alongside four others. The O/E Collab typically goes on for seven days and the participants are given a themed challenge, which they cant refuse. Before the O/E Collab begins, all participants create one solo work of art based on the collab theme which may later be built on by other participants. Once the O/E Collab is officially underway, everyone may create evolved versions of any one else’s artwork that catches his or her eye.

This process can be repeated multiple times over the span of seven days. As the collab progresses, near real-time updates covering the creatives and design processes are made. OuterEditors get to experience the wonder of art unfolding before their very eyes and are empowered to vote, comment and share. The collab will conclude by having the top five voted artworks produced on premium OuterEdit apparel and made available for (pre)order on the OuterEdit store.

Here’s an example:

outeredit-example

At the end of the day, visitors to our online store are met with a selection of limited edition OuterEdit T-shirts. […] The O/E Tees are constructed with 100 percent combed cotton (making them ultra-soft and light to wear around), are designed to fit well, not go out of shape easily – and utilize printing methods that are soft, long lasting and help you express your new point of view.

Can you tell me a little about your team?

Ryan: Being a start-up we work with as many friends and family who are able and willing to chip in any way possible. But we also roll with a fine selection of young people on a full/part time basis. Some of these guys have been true enablers for us – and its often very surprising how bold & resourceful they can be.

Also, having agreed to be a part of OuterEdit and the things we do, we make it a point to build the relationships we have with our global network of creatives and make them feel welcome as part of the OuterEdit crew.

[…] We run a mini studio office and retail showcase from a shophouse on Niven Road, Singapore.

What’s the revenue model? Do you have any investors?

Ryan: Upon completion of each O/E Collab, the top five most-hearted artwork get applied to the O/E Tee. We run them in pretty limited quantities, and the sale of these helps us continue to do the things we do.

We are privileged to be supported by both Spring Singapore and the Design Singapore Council through their respective Y.E.S and DBIG grant schemes.

Do you have any exciting future plans coming up?

Ryan: These days, we’re continuing to do what we can to stay relevant and fresh to our target audiences. We’ve got exciting O/E Collab themes and creatives lined-up every month until the end of next year – and we’re in the midst of looking for new creative talent from other parts of the world – which can only mean more awesome OuterEdit T-shirts!

360 Search Launches Independent Domain So.com

Screenshot of So.com on Chinese National Day

In August we reported that it took 5 days for 360 Search to be No.2 Largest Web Search Engine in China. One month later, the company launched an independent domain so.com, aiming at a “Safe, Fresh and Reliable” search engine.

“From a poll on Weibo, we are happy to see that over 40% of the respondents thought the domain so.com was brief and catchy. We love this domain as well because S stands for SAFE, and O stands for Open, which happens to be 360’s belief all along.” CEO Zhou Hongyi explained about the new name and pointed out the company will keep on guarding net users from viruses and malicious sites, meanwhile will open up  to cooperate with more industry peers.

According to a 3rd party data, the whole business scale of Chinese search industry will surpass RMB 30billion in 2012, and Baidu still covers 80% market share. Search engines have become the most important entrance to Internet, but net users are not happy with the status quo. The whole market lacks healthy competition, current players lack social responsibilities, and the unfairness caused by interferences in searching results is getting worse…All these problems have made the search engines to be unreliable or even risky in users’ eyes.

As the biggest safe service provider in China, 360 (NYSE:QIHU) has kept on offering Internet safe products since founded in 2006. From  the Q2 financial report of 360, its PC active user base  has reached 425 million and that of smartphone  is about 120 million. President Qi Xiangdong revealed that, “Apart from our former safe portfolio, we will release a series of new products focusing on searching safety. We are dedicated to providing safe and reliable search results to our users.” Zhang Peng, the editor-in-chief of Business Value commented on the SAFE and OPEN characteristics of so.com, “On the one hand, the safe property of 360 stands itself out among other players; on the other hand, to emphasize on openness paves way for more support in this industry.”

Accordingly, the search team of 360 is well experienced in search area. This time so.com utilizes the 3rd generation search engine technology(Search 2.0) and launches a “Thumb Plan” in which users’ behaviors influence the results ranking. “This new rule implies a future trend of user-oriented searching, and thus the annoying spam sites can be avoided as well.” said insider Qu Xiaodong said that, “With its huge user base, the success of the ‘Thumb Plan’ seems very promising.”

Sina Weibo Updates With QR Code Service

Just now on my way to the campus, I scanned a QR code on a rare plant, and I got directed to a botany cyclopedia! Even a tree can have its own QR code now, what about you?

Good news for Weibo users. The QR Code service is finally released with the latest Weibo3.1.0. You can generate your own QR Code, and share it with your friends on Weibo or just print it on anything you like. Currently Weibo QR Code  service provides functions including adding friends, access to certain pages, and direct to some fixed-content Publish Box.

To generate your QR Code is available on all mobile devices or PCs. For PC users, go to http://m.weibo.com/web/qrcode/, enter your Weibo ID and you’ll see the code. Here’s Technode’s Weibo QR Code.  : )

This service seems a good way to improve user experience. You can print your QR code on your business card, or make some interesting labels as you like(on your shirt for example). It will be much easier to add friends in many situations such as meetings or parties. Just show your QR Code, and blink, two new friends.

For enterprise users, this could also be an efficient marketing method for promoting online events or ads to target readers. The small code with big data and fast readability has drawn much attention in media, internet and many other fields. Maybe in the near future, you can hear people say Scan me! rather than Hello.
