Pi of Life : Creativity Juicer

“Think out of the box”
There’s hardly been a more often used cliche. Its as often abused too, with “innovation workshops” and “guidelines” trying to define a box in which you can think outside it!

Think Outside: No Box Required

Think Outside: No Box Required

Its also something entrepreneurs need on an everyday basis. Sometimes to create something wonderful, sometimes to delight the customer, and sometimes to just get around seemingly intractable problems.

Thinking unconventionally also keeps your mind sharp, alive and active, and in one form or another, both demands and helps foster creativity.

Trouble is, most of us do not think of ourselves as creative people – that’s reserved for a very narrow band of professions, and comes with certain traits, appearances and attitudes that many of us do not possess or even associate with.

Don’t Try Too Hard

A lot of smart ideas, amazing insights and brilliant solutions just “happen”. Watching a movie, while in the shower, just glancing through the newspaper (but rarely when watching TV).

Read

Reading opens your mind up to a lot of new ideas, different parts of the world, new ways of thinking. Read a variety of books – not just self help, or just fiction. You’ll be amazed at what might strike you when you’re enjoying that Phantom or ACK from ages ago!

Talk to people about Ideas

It happens so often – you think through an idea, and even as you start describing it to the first person who’s willing to listen, you immediately realize you forgot to think of some issue, or completely ignored a possibility that now seems obvious.

Also, people think very differently, and like to share their opinion. Its amazing how you can often outsource creative thoughts and get some amazing inputs that might have totally eluded you!

Disconnect

Play Games

Scrabble, chess, dumb charades, pictionary – anything that needs you to push your brain along a different dimension – helps you not only spend some quality time with family and friends, but also exercises a different part of the brain.

Don’t be Afraid

To draw, write – a short essay, a blog or even poetry. “Me?” is the usual response – but backing yourself is not just liberating, it also makes you think more freely without getting all caught up in how great your idea is. Even Edison invented a 1093 things for the few really useful ideas that he’s actually well known for.

Question. Re-examine. Be Curious

This again goes back the the previous one – a lot many questions will seem like stupid ones to start with. Especially in the Indian context, we are taught to accept “truths” from established sources of knowledge and wisdom. Tell yourself – explicitly – that its ok to not take that as a given, and questions are not about right and wrong, but about different. Newton’s F=m.a is what we all learned as the truth, yet holds true only for larger objects in everyday conditions.

Can we travel differently? Could there be another answer to equity splits? Is search a solved problem – and why not? Are people totally happy with the way something is being bought/sold right now? What are the inefficiencies in any system? What assumptions and variables have changed since a product built around those tried solving a problem?

It needs you be curious and sometimes opportunistic wherever you are. On a vacation, in a conference, in a party, in the mall, or driving around. A few dozen observations will eventually turn into a few insights. Over time, you’ll get better at it as well.

Yes, very often a creative spark is merely the coming together of a relentless seeking of information and opportunity and the gumption to take a call based on seemingly unreliable insights you derive from it, and the latter becomes a skill as its done more and more often.

To paraphrase a famous one from a very geeky legacy – “May the creative force be with you!”

“Sacked” Valuefirst CEO Kumar Apoorv booked for cheating the company

Gurgaon police has registered a case against Kumar Apoorv, former CEO of Value First, his wife Payal Gupta, and two former directors of the company – Raju Venugopal and Venu Kumar Raju, reports Times of India.

According to the FIR registered with the Gurgaon police, the four have been accused of fraud involving Rs 7 crore and also of spreading false news.  The complainant, a director of Valufirst, said that Apoorv was sacked from the company on September 23 and he did not resign on his own as he claims to have.

Gagan Chadha, a director of Value First Digital Media Ltd, lodged a complaint at the Sadar police station in Gurgaon. In his complaint, he accused his company’s former CEO Kumar Apoorv of making personal gains through the acquisition of Way2sms- another company which was bought by Valuefirst earlier.

The complaint says that Apoorv had proposed the acquisition of Hyderabad based consumer focused Internet technology company Way2sms for Rs 150 crore to the board of directors. The complaint says that the it was later found that Apoorv was cheating the company as an amount worth Rs 7 crore involved in the deal went into his personal bank account.

At that time, the transaction was one of the largest acquisitions in the Internet industry in India that made ValueFirst (as claimed) the largest Indian digital media company by revenue and number of users. Directors of Way2sms were also in on the scam with Kumar Apoora, the complaint said.

To corroborate the complaint, Valuefirst director has attached the Kumar Apoorv’s bank statements which show that the directors of way2sms company have transferred Rs 7 crore in three instalments to the account of the sacked chief executive. And, the company management now wants to know why Kumar Apporva made a personal deal out of the acquisition deal for his personal profit. The accused couldn’t be contacted, said the report.

Report: Over 3,000 Foxconn Workers on iPhone Production Line Go On Strike After New “Strict Demands”

Apple CEO Tim Cook tours Foxconn's Zhengzhou iPhone plant in March 2012 (Image source: Bloomberg)

Foxconn’s (LSE:HHPD; HKEX:2038; TPE:2354) plant in Zhengzhou, in central China’s Henan province, has been hit by a worker strike, according to China Labor Watch. The walk-out occurred on Friday at 1pm local time, “involved three to four thousand production workers” and therefore “multiple iPhone 5 production lines from various factory buildings were in a state of paralysis for the entire day.” It’s not clear if they have returned to work today, Saturday. The not-for-profit organization reports:

In addition to demanding that workers work during the holiday [China’s “golden week” from September 30th to October 7th], Foxconn raised overly strict demands on product quality without providing worker training for the corresponding skills. This led to workers turning out products that did not meet standards and ultimately put a tremendous amount of pressure on workers. Additionally, quality control inspectors fell into to conflicts [sic] with workers and were beat up multiple times by workers. Factory management turned a deaf ear to complaints about these conflicts and took no corrective measures. The result of both of these circumstances was a widespread work stoppage on the factory floor among workers and inspectors.

China Labor Watch details the physical altercations at the plant, which was visited by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook earlier this year:

According to workers, there was a fight between workers and quality control inspectors in area K that led to the damage in inspection room CA, the injury of some people, and the hospitalization of others. After this, another similar incident occurred in area K, once again leading to quality control inspectors getting beat up. Yesterday, inspectors in area L received physical threats. When inspectors reported these issues to factory management, the management simply ignored and turned their back on the issue. For these reasons, all day and night shift inspectors carried out a work stoppage today that paralyzed the production lines.

Tech veteran Lalit Ahuja to launch Kyron, a $50 mn accelerator to “pamper Indian startups”: Report

Technology veteran Lalit Ahuja, Swiss Venture Capitalist John Cook and French-American VC Larry Glaeser have teamed up to launch Kyron, a $ 50 mn accelerator for Indian startups, reports Mint.

According to the newspaper report, “the first batch of 10 companies at Kyron with no more than four founding members each  will receive $ 100,000 in seed funding and access to resources in return for up to a 10 % equity in the startup.” Ahuja says that the accelerator is going to pamper startups with legal, financial and technical resources and perks like food, La-Z-Boy couches and showers.

Kyron has plans to incubate 125 new companies and there will be two batches of 10 startups every year starting from February and July. Ahuja, the Chairman and President of Target Corporation India set up the multinational giant’s captive center in India from scratch.

He was earlier the CEO of News Corp’s venture capital fund in India. He was also the CEO of Datamatics Ltd and LG Group’s software and R&D operations in Bangalore.

There has been a lot of action in the startup ecosystem over the last few months. Only two days ago, super angel Dave McClure’s accelerator 500 startups hired Pankaj Jain to focus on Indian startups. 500 startups has invested in over 10 Indian companies.

Last month, former president of Reliance entertainment, Rajesh Sawhney launched GSF accelerator to invest around $ 250,000- $ 300,000 in return for 5- 8 % equity in the company.

In August, Veddis ventures launched an incubator in Gurgaon to back early stage companies. The investment group led by Vikrant Bhargava, one of the co-founders of Partygaming Plc already has some in house startups.

Pearl Uppal, former CEO of FashionandYou and Gaurav Kacharu, who quit Dealsandyou earlier, have launched an accelerator called 5ideas to invest about Rs 2.5 cr in each of the 5 startups it selects.

As Sameer puts it, its nice to see so many accelerators coming up. But we need the brakes and clutch as well.

6 Alternative Gangnam Style Videos From Across Asia

The Gangnam Style video by Psy has been viewed more than 359 million times and has inspired thousands of people across the world to remake the iconic dance by performing their own version of Gangnam Style.

Here’s a collection of the neatest Gangnam Style-inspired tribute/parody videos from around Asia to help kick start the weekend ahead of you:

1. Philippines

Here is a very well organized flash mob dance performed by around one thousand inmates of a Philippines jail. Yes, this is the same bunch of Cebu cellmates who hit global headlines back in 2010 with their Michael Jackson dance performances. I wonder if they get reduced sentences for these flash mob dances?

Plus, this video nicely showcases just how viral and influential the Gangnam Style song/dance is, as the prisoners’ video has been viewed close to 2.6 million times since it was uploaded just over one week ago.

2. Indonesia

This is a daring attempt by 1,000 Indonesians performing an illegal Gangnam Style flash mob at an Indonesian landmark called Bundaran HI. They did a pretty convincing job and even encouraged passers-by to join the mass dance. This video has been viewed around 1.9 million times so far.

3. Malaysia

Malaysians do not lose out when making their own Gangnam-themed music videos. This funny video is called “Orang Sabah Style.” Orang Sabah means Sahabans, and is made both to promote tourism on the Malaysian state of Sabah and to celebrate Malaysian Independence Day. Though the lyrics are in Mandarin Chinese, they provide English subtitles for more people to understand. The video has garnered around 3.6 million views so far.

4. Thailand

This is Thailand’s version of the Gangnam Style video – though it keeps the original’s Korean lyrics and just focuses on changing the visuals. Nonetheless, they’ve done a great job of keeping the humor of Psy’s video. Impressively, this video has close to 4.6 million views.

5. South Korea

This Korean-made video is called “Hongdae Style.” I don’t understand Korean but I think that is the only word changed from the original Gangnam Style lyrics. The cinematography of Hongdae Style closely resembles the original video. This one has an impressive 4.8 million views to date.

6. Singapore

Here’s a quirky video titled “Singaporean Style.” The music’s lyrics satirize aspects of life in the city state – but ultimately it’s about how they’re proud to be Singaporeans. This video has around 2.1 million views so far. Though we notice it is also getting quite a few dislikes, even from Singaporean commenters, perhaps because the performers have riskily changed the lyrics.

Bonus

This hilarious “Pyeonyang Style” video appears to be made by a Canadian, and is pretty hilarious. Although I’m not sure what Kim Jong Un would make of this particular Gangnam Style reboot. This video has 4.1 million views with lots of commenters joking that this video might instigate a nuclear war.

Government says yes to Venture Capital fund dedicated to Dalit entrepreneurs

To promote and boost entrepreneurship amongst minorities, market regulator SEBI has registered a dedicated venture capital fund for Dalits. The fund would support businesses run by people from scheduled tribes and scheduled caste. After the registration, Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DICCI) Venture Capital fund can raise funds from both private entities and government’s financial institutions, reports Economic Times.

Earlier in December 2011, Dalit Indian Chamber of commerce and Industries (DICCI) had announced that it will create a venture capital fund with corpus of Rs 500 crore. During that time chamber said that companies like Tata Capital, Forbes, Godrej, Thermax are willing to invest in the corpus.

According to the census of MSMEs in 2006-07, Dalits own about 1,20,000 companies across India, out of which 7.7 % are registered, 1.55 million micro, small and medium enterprises. Tamil Nadu had the most Dalit-owned firms, followed by Karnataka and UP. Importantly, unregistered MSMEs were estimated by the census at a much higher 24.5 million.

DICCI was established in 2005 to motivate Dalit youth to enter the business & industry sector as entrepreneurs and encourage and support them in their entrepreneurial ventures. Currently more than 1000 entrepreneurs and professionals are members of DICCI and has Anu Aga (Director, Thermax), Raghunath Mashelkar (Former DG, CSIR) and Kalpana Saroj (Chairperson Kamani Tubes) as key advisors.

Besides, creating venture capital, DICCI is planning to roll out Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP), DICCI helpline and Dalit Social Responsibility  (DSR).

Big brother’s many tools

The Indian government has been trying its best to get access to Internet data and has had its shot at Internet censorship from time to time. It’s been trying to get into the Blackberries and the iPhones. Besides the usual legal recourse, phone tapping, shadowing, questioning and on the ground investigation, the government has a whole new set of tools now. Assuming that it wants to play big brother, will it succeed? Take a look at these new tools it has and decide for yourselves.

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India, a government agency charged with giving nearly 1.2 crore Indians a unique online identification number has been testing Iris based authentication system and has concluded that the mechanism to identify millions of people using iris scans is highly accurate. The system, works over mobile networks and offline cameras that appears crude compared to what you see in Minority Report but the country now has a biometric database which contains fingerprint and iris scans of nearly 200 million residents. The database, already the largest in the world, will soon have a majority of the country’s population on it. Read our earlier post here.
  • The government is planning create a pool of DNA profiles of “offenders.” The center will introduce the bill, first introduced in 2007, in the Parliament to legislate this. According to experts, this could lead to large scale misuse. According to news reports, the bill will also cover people who go through abortion, fight paternity suits and receive or donate organs.
  • The center is now buying software to gain access to secure mobile phones or password protected computers. The home ministry is buying more than 30 lisenced software from firms in the US, Canada and Israel to crack siezed mobilephones and computers, according to a recent report. It’s had trouble getting at information stored in Blackberry and iPhones.
  • In Maharashtra, the state government wants to install a network of 6,000 CCTV cameras across Mumbai. Bidding has been mired in cotroversies but the state is going to spend nearly Rs 500 crore to install these cameras. Similar networks are being installed in various parts of the country.
  • A national population register, containing photographs and biometric scans, is being setup at the cost of Rs 3539 cr. Data collection is underway. Many have been enrolled already.
  • NATGRID (National Intelligence Grid) will make it easy for security agencies including RAW, IB, CBI, Enforcement Directorate and others to access collated data from 21 different categories of databases including railway and air travel, income tax, phone records, credit card transactions, bank accounts, property records and other details.

Surely, all this is being done by an elected government then why are we worried? Because of the lack of safeguards. The Right to Privacy bill is still in the works (if there is one, we haven’t heard of it) and there are no basic guarantees from the government to protect privacy  of the Indian citizen yet.

Speaking with Freelancer about its Biggest Investment Ever, Indonesia [Interview]

Recently Freelancer.com launced its Indonesian version at Freelancer.co.id. The company now provides Indonesian language support, a local customer service team, a concierge team, and local currency support. Freelancer is targeting 100,000 users in the country by the end of this year, and 400,000 by next year. For now, Indonesian users still just comprise 1.5 percent of the four million Freelancer.com users worldwide. The primary reason for this has been the lack of Indonesian language support – but that’s now available.

We chatted with the vice president of growth for Freelancer, Willix Halim, to learn more about the company’s expansion in Indonesia. Since we also saw some complaints from Freelancer.com users about suspended accounts and money withdrawals, we asked him to clarify this issue as well.

Do you think not having Indonesian language until now was really be an obstacle to aspiring Freelancer users?

Willix: For any graduates, they can speak in English already. We have 70,000 freelancers in Indonesia, and none of them are having trouble in speaking English. I think Indonesian language support is for entrepreneurs, in case they don’t know how to speak English. [For example] if they’re in the textile industry that does not deal with the English language, that’s why we provide this for them. But for freelancers, i’m sure everyone would be able to speak English.

Are the job postings to be made in Indonesian?

Willix: So there are two job post [areas] in Freelancer.co.id: one is in Indonesian, one is in English. So people from Indonesia can still bid on projects in English. Apart from local job postings, there are also job posts from around the world giving more opportunities for freelancers to bid.

Do you have an office in Indonesia yet?

Willix: Unfortunately, we don’t have a physical address here. In the upcoming months, we definitely will have one. We really want to expand here. I’m a big believer in Indonesia. I was born here, and this is where the things are happening, right? Facebook is coming to Indonesia, everyone is coming to Indonesia. Rakuten is. So yeah, this is where the tech boom is going to be.

How are you going to develop the payment system in Indonesia?

Willix: So now you can deposit in rupiah through credit cards. Unfortunately, PayPal services don’t support the rupiah. You can do wire banking via HSBC to send money to banks anywhere within the country. We looking to essentially contact local banks – Permata, Bank Mandiri, KlikBCA. We can have a partnership with them, and withdrawal and deposits could be very easy.

Indonesia is the biggest investment that we’ve made. We have ten other languages now, including Tagalog in the Philippines, along with Spanish, German, and more. Turkey as well, we’re launching in Turkey next month.

What do you think are the most promising jobs that freelancers could do here in Indonesia?

Willix: I would still imagine it’s building a website, and e-commerce. I believe that there’s a lot of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) here, as I said that 99.9 percent of all firms established in 2009 to 2010 are SMEs and most of them probably don’t know how to make a website.

Most industries are already digitized. If they haven’t, they will be digitized. Building websites, getting traffic for your website, and all of these jobs will be coming to Indonesia. That’s what we expect.

On the same day as your press conference, there was a labor strike in many areas protesting about outsourcing. Then you announced this platform for outsourcing. What do you say about that, and how do you see the economy in Indonesia?

Willix: I was really scared actually. I thought, why do you choose the same time? There’s a conspiracy! Just kidding! It’s a completely different thing. The GDP (PPP) in Indonesia is 16th in the world and it’s growing bigger. Indonesia is going to grow as big as Brazil, Russia, India, and China. I think it could be there in about ten years.

That outsourcing demonstration – it’s a completely different thing. What I tried to emphasize about Freelancer.com is how freelancers in Indonesia could earn $100,000 here. We try to empower entrepreneurs too. The problem that [laborers] are facing doesn’t really exist in Freelancer.com. For us, we provide the convenience to work at home, being able to work as part-time moms, being able to digitize your business and grow your revenue further.

So it’s not about cheap labor?

Willix: Well, cheap is relative, right? In the US, building a website with $200 is cheap. But for us Indonesians, $200 is good money if we finish in three days. We can earn $2,000 a month which is a really good money. It’s a really different thing.

How about illegal jobs in the site?

Willix: We’re making sure that the jobs posted are legal. We keep tracking them. We have 3,000 to 4,000 jobs posted a day. You can see how hard it is for us to sort every single project. But we try. For Freelancer.co.id, I’ve mentioned to my engineers to remove the ‘triple x’ projects because it’s illegal here. We are looking at it very extensively now. It’s a continuous process.

An upset user of Freelancer.com mentioned in a comment in my previous post that the site suspended his/her account. Could you explain how an account could get suspended?

Willix: An account could get suspended for many reasons. One reason is for using fake names. I also read the article as well, and I think [that individual] was using a fake name [on his Freelancer account]. Because there’s a difference between the name itself and the aliases that he was using. We thought there might be something dodgy there.

But the account is suspended for a limited time. Because it’s limited, we need him/her to submit Identification number documents to make sure he is the right guy. It usually takes about five to seven days to resolve it. On average it takes two to four days. Once it’s resolved, you are free to withdraw the money.

We have to comply with anti-money laundering laws in Australia. We limit users if there’s something going on with that user – like with the commenter in the article – like having two or three different names.

How difficult is the mechanism to withdraw money in other non-English speaking countries?

Willix: In India, we provide express withdrawal by directing it straight to the local banks. They will get the money within two or three days. PayPal is probably the major third party that we use – but unfortunately it’s not available for rupiah. You can even withdraw with a Freelancer debit card which we can send to you. You can withdraw from any MasterCard affiliated ATMs as well. If everything goes right, which happens for about 97 percent of users, you will be getting the money within seven days.

How about Identity theft issues? Some of our readers were hesitant to submit their IDs to Freelancer.

Willix: Absolutely not, essentially it will be deleted once we look at it. We make sure that the process is as safe as possible, so definitely no possible identity theft. The whole point is that we want to make sure that the money goes to the right person.

How does the customer service team in Indonesia work to help freelancers address such complaints?

Willix: There’s a live chat support for Indonesia now, in the Indonesian language. You can even email support@freelancer.com. We also have a concierge system that they can contact as well. The concierge system is virtual, but they can speak bahasa as too.
