Pi of Life : Health Check for Entrepreneurs [You owe it to your team, family and customers]

Long hours, plus a 24×7 obsession with work and related ghosts. The laptop pretty much always on, or if not, a conversation over the phone. The emotional highs and lows at exaggerated levels on an everyday basis. Delayed lunches, skipped breakfasts, and snacky dinners.

The above must sound very familiar to you if you’ve recently started something on your own.

It obviously takes a massive toll on the body. You’re very likely already nearing, or already into your thirties, and the body will soon stop taking kindly to sustained abuse. Health is wealth has a much more direct impact for you as an entrepreneur, so think a little about these.

You’re likely to have read – more than once – about drinking enough water, regularly, about cutting back on too much coffee and avoiding junk, about eating small healthy meals, frequently and not going hungry too long. You’ve also read up about exercise (and I think cycling solves that wonderfully well without taking any extra time out at all).

Here’s a few more, slightly less obvious ones.

Sleep, and that body clock thing

Sleep is a wonderful stress buster, and there’s little you can do to work around this one. Yes, it seems important to finish that feature tonight, and there’s so much you cannot seem to find enough time to do it, but cutting back on sleep is not going to help. Often, an inspired 30 minutes is all it takes to achieve a breakthrough, and a tired mind and body cannot find inspiration in much – not regularly, at least.

Health for Entrepreneurs

Health for Entrepreneurs

Different people sleep for different lengths of time. The debate between 6 hours or 8 won’t die anytime soon, and you should go with what works for you. But some discipline around it, and “switching off” a little before you actually go to sleep help derive the most out of it. Being regular is more important that long hours.

And yes, if you’re like me, those power naps help a lot.

Leisure, and what they call “Quality Time”

You might have a family. And very likely have friends, at least. One, those relationships are a big investment and the quality of your future life depends more on those than on anything the startup will make for you. Seriously.

There’s also a lot to disconnecting, as I earlier talked about. To just give the mind a break, de-stress and even keep your creativity alive.

It might be tough to do, but setting some time away for a trip to the movies with your loved ones, or a short vacation, or even a 15 minute conversation over a cup of tea in the morning goes a long way as an investment into yourself and the relationships that matter to you.

Without that phone popping up notifications, of course, please.

Positivity

Optimism and hope are the currency the entrepreneur lives off. Its sounds easy, but maintaining a positive outlook is a real tough one through the huge highs and massive lows doing a startup always brings along with it. It takes time, and a deep belief in the face of things blowing up in your face – to stay hopeful, cheerful and feel fine. Putting on an act it one thing – being able to do it with nobody around is a toughie.

But as you start to get it – its liberating – and keeps you going. Its got to be good for your health!

Buddha and Meditation

Buddha and Meditation

Meditation

A lot many swear by it – and I personally feel it in a few moments that I get lost in a book, or on a ride, or something else I get very involved in. Like someone said, yoga is a state with the absence of anxiety about the future, analysis of the past and where only the instant matters. Given the buzz inside an entrepreneur’s head, its non-trivial to attain this help – but even getting a little close with my feeble attempts towards this seems to help a lot. Its probably a great way to try and achieve a lot of the above!

Get a Coach

No, I do not mean you should hire an expensive life-coach – that can wait for the IPO and the big bucks. A spouse, or a close friend, or mentor can often play this role. Tell them explicitly you’d love for them to watch your health – both physical and mental – and not shy away from encouraging you to make changes.

That might just get you to justify the membership fee you paid the neighbourhood gym a couple of months ago :)

The old overused cliche of a healthy body being able to support a healthy mind is – well – it got repeated that often for a good reason. As an entrepreneur, you are your startup in its early days. More than the product or your promises, people invest in you, customers believe you and early employees buy your vision. You owe it to all these folks to take care of yourself.

Karnataka launches portal to monitor forests online using ISRO’s geoportal Bhuvan

The forest department in Karnataka has launched two websites as a part of its e-governance initiative. The first site, called e-Green watch, is mostly a transparency portal which tracks central government funds allocated for afforestation. The second, is more interesting.

The state government has integrated the data from forest department with the Indian Space Research Organization’s geoportal- Bhuvan. Using spatial data from earth observation satellites shown on Bhuvan and data from the forest department, forests of Karnataka can be observed. Forest fires, assets, changes in forest cover etc can be viewed through the portal.

On a Satellite map of Karnataka, one can see villages, water bodies, landscapes, national parks, beat boundaries etc. When launched, Bhuvan was technically superior to Google earth in many ways. It is capable of higher resolution and is updated more often than Google earth. It has multiple views and is backed by powerful spatial data in the back end. However, while Google earth and its maps are widely used, Bhuvan did not make much headway with the consumers. Government departments have been using ISROs satellite imagery for various purposes like town planning.

Bug or Ban? Weibo Users Report Trouble Registering New International Accounts

After coming across a tip from a user that overseas users might be having trouble registering new Sina Weibo accounts in an earlier article, we decided to do a little investigating. The result? We have no idea what the heck is going on.

We spoke to a number of people as well as attempting our own new account registrations across different countries, ISPs, and browsers, and came up with a lot of different responses. A few folks said they had no trouble registering a new overseas account. Several others said they couldn’t do it at all. Neither my colleague Rick nor I (he’s in Japan, I’m in the US) were able to successfully register a new overseas account even after trying a variety of different email accounts and browsers.

Sorry, you've registered too frequently, we suggest you take a break!

Even more oddly, the error messages that we got seemed to vary. Rick got one error message about his email account having too much activity and another “server is too busy” error. I got a different error about having registered too many times despite the fact that I have never tried to register a weibo account on my current ISP and I also tried registering with four different email accounts and across three different browsers.

So what’s going on here. I honestly have no clue, but it’s clear that a decent percentage (though not all) international users are unable to register new Sina Weibo accounts right now. Is this a temporary bug or a concerning new trend? Are you experiencing any issues signing up for a Sina Weibo account? Let us know in the comments.

Qihoo’s Zhou Hongyi Needs to Just Shut Up

“Science cop” Fang Zhouzi seems to be remaining quiet after yesterday stating that he planned to sue Qihoo 360 for alleging that he had been hired by Baidu to spread false reports about the safety of Qihoo’s 360 Browser. But despite Fang’s silence, Qihoo appears to be doubling down on the rhetoric. Qihoo CEO Zhou Hongyi’s weibo account remains filled with posts about Fang, including several new “long weibo” statements. Zhou has said repeatedly that Fang isn’t “attacking fakes” but rather “fake attacking,” and he has even established a new “refuting rumors” website that appears to feature a crude caricature of Fang with a “Baidu” sign around his neck.

Speaking of refuting rumors, we should probably pause here to say that Baidu has categorically denied that it has in any way attempted to pay or influence Fang Zhouzi or Sima Nan. As Qihoo has yet to provide any evidence whatsoever that Baidu is connected to the Fang Zhouzi attacks, I’m inclined to believe that Zhou Hongyi is basically just making this up.

In fact, you know what? No. I am abandoning my attempt at editorial balance. Fang Zhouzi can definitely be kind of an ass, and I get the impression he’s not super careful about fact-checking every one of his accusations (some of what he has said about Qihoo is pretty obviously wrong), but Qihoo’s response has been utterly ridiculous. And it’s not like this is the first time this has happened. Time and time again, Zhou Hongyi has reacted to questions about his products with invective, threats, slogans, and a deluge of negative weibo posts. He may be right some of the time, but frankly, I don’t care. Shut up, Zhou. Just shut up. If your products are good, let them speak for themselves. If they’re not, then work on improving them. Working your way into juvenile slapfights online every other week is just pathetic, and even when you win them, you look like a loser.

Moreover, your accusation that Baidu is paying Fang Zhouzi to attack Qihoo is apparently totally unsubstantiated and it doesn’t even make sense. Fang has been going after companies for ethical violations for more than a decade; how idiotic would one have to be to approach a man like that and say “Hey, we’d like to pay you money to unethically attack our competitors!” Even if Baidu were inclined to do that, in what universe could that possibly be worth the risk of Fang refusing and then outing Baidu for fraud and attempted bribery? I don’t care what you think of Baidu’s ethics; you don’t get to be the biggest search engine in China by being that straight-up dumb.

Of course, I suppose one shouldn’t be too surprised at Zhou Hongyi’s public response to criticism given the revelation that he runs his company like a tyrant with employees living in fear of making him angry. But seriously, enough is enough. If Zhou is a tech CEO, he needs to give up the trash talk and go back to making stuff. If he’s not ready to do that, then he ought to resign his post at Qihoo 360 and become a battle rapper.

Endeavor Indonesia: These Three Tech Entrepreneurs Will Change the Country

From the left - Vincent iswaratioso (Indomog), Niki Luhur (Kartuku), and Aldi Haryopratomo (Ruma)

Global non-profit Endeavor aspires to be a catalyst for high-impact entrepreneurs around the world, and now it has chosen its first three entrepreneurs from Indonesia. Interestingly they are all IT startups: online payment solution Indomog, payment service provider Kartuku, and Ruma, which empowers the poor to become entrepreneurs using mobile phone technology.

The journey to become Endeavor’s chosen entrepreneurs is very steep and rigorous. For example, the entrepreneurs must pass the International Selection Panel (ISP) by a unanimous decision from its six panelists. The panels select entrepreneurs from all around the world, and this time the city host is Istanbul. Sati Rasuanto, the managing director of Endeavor Indonesia explains:

We are very proud that our three entrepreneurs attending the Istanbul ISP were all selected. They have demonstrated the scalability of their businesses in the country and the entrepreneurs represent the high-impact potential necessary to drive economic growth in Indonesia. We look forward to identifying and supporting more Indonesian high-impact entrepreneurs.

Indonesia is the first Asian country to join the Endeavor program. If you’re interested to know more about the program, you can see further details here and here.

Malaysian TV’s ‘Make The Pitch’ Finalists FashionValet Pocket Some Serious Seed Funding

Season two of the Malaysian startup pitching TV show Make The Pitch has just wrapped up with two of the six finalists securing some serious seed funding from MyEG (MYEG:MK), the e-services provider that also backs the TV show. The larger of the two investments was made into the clothing e-commerce site FashionValet.net, which has secured RM1 million ($326,000) in funding from MyEG.

From its Kuala Lumpur base, FashionValet’s marketing manager Marissa Zamani tells us that the startup has “over 10,000 users, and over 150 brands” on board now, which is way up from 10 fashion suppliers/partners just over a year ago when the site was first conceived – way before the recent TV show appearance. It sells male and female clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories.

Marissa explains that the two founders of FashionValet, Fadzarudin Anuar and Vivy Yusof (pictured above, with Vivy on the left), “had to go through three rounds of presentations and Q&A between us and the [Make The Pitch] panelists throughout the whole show,” and then “all negotiations were done on the TV show and the [funding] deal was made on the spot in the finals.”

As much as we love to see startups moving quickly, that sounds pretty terrifying. Like with Singapore’s similar Angel’s Gate reality TV show for startups, that kind of high pressure, high-speed deal is risky – after all, funding is not just about the money, but also your rapport with the VCs who should also serve as quality mentors.

Anyway, the show allowed Fadza and Vivy to show their mettle, and they impressed the Make The Pitch judges by getting sales to grow 15 percent in the first six weeks of the show’s airing.

FashionValet is up against some strong fashion e-commerce rivals in the region, such as Rocket Internet’s Zalora. Co-founder Fadzarudin Shah recently penned an interesting blog post about dealing with major competition. In it, he writes:

My response is simple: Having huge competitors play in the same space only further validates that there is a huge opportunity available. So forget about getting bogged down by a brand that suddenly blankets the websites you visit with their ads. Instead, now is the time to show potential clients and investors what your website could be. If you are scared of competitors, you will always be behind them in the pack. Take it as a challenge and enjoy the ride.
