Indonesian Lifestyle Portal Updaterus.com Talks About its Transformational Decision [INTERVIEW]

Seven months ago we talked about Updaterus.com after the rather unique news portal launched. Now the site has pivoted, ditching the format of news mixed with beautiful women, evolving into a mens’ lifestyle site – which still (to our relief) has plenty of beauties. So, Updaterus has ditched its unisex market approach and opted to focus on just one niche – the guys.

We talked with Jonathan Marga Luhur, the CEO of Updaterus, about the site’s transformation and progress.

1. Can I say that Updaterus is the Indonesian version of AskMen?

Jonathan: Well, lots of people commented that we are the Indonesian version of Askmen.com. We initially never targeted ourselves to be like Askmen; however, since we share the same vision as it, many people commented positive things about our similarity.

2. How would you describe it then?

Jonathan: Some of the core ideas about our mens’ portal come from my personal experience. I was a total geek who did not know how to dress properly or how to talk to women, nor did I have a clue about my career. It took me years and lots of books to learn about all these. Our mens’ portal focuses on giving tips on how to be a better man. I found out that a guy does not have to be handsome or own fancy cars to attract women — he does not even have to be rich. But a guy who has an attractive personality, self-confidence, knows how to dress just right without being overly ‘metro’ will automatically be more appealing. We also take our content seriously, and that’s why we bring in established experts to write in our [columns] instead of just Googling each topic. In short, Updaterus.com is a mens’ portal that can improve a life with basic tools and knowledge.

3. Why did you decide to do this transformation?

Jonathan: Our first version, a unisex website, was a trial aimed at a bigger market [male and female]. Two months after we launched it, we encountered difficulties in how to serve that market because we had to satisfy both sides. Also, since my partners are all men, we felt that the mens’ market is one that we are good at. Without thinking much, we pivoted to become a mens’ portal. I used the lean startup method of “Build, Measure, Learn,” so as soon as we felt the unisex thing was not working, we pivoted.

4. Can you share any website statistics? How had the adjustment gone so far?

Jonathan: The transformation is super awesome. Serving just one market is easier than trying to do two markets. Our pageviews have rocketed about ten-fold. And also our recent video has 52,000 Youtube hits in less than a week.

In the era where there are big media [sites] like Kompas, Detik, Viva, Kaskus, it is more likely for us to [succeed] in this niche market.

5. Male readers must be loving the ‘Beauties by the Minute’ feature. How many “beauties” do you have there? Can the users chat and connect with them?

Jonathan: We have about 2,000 to 3,000 registrants but again we are very selective in choosing who can appear in the ‘beauty by the minute’, so we are down to a couple of hundred. My team and I have a conversation about [potential meetings between users and beauties], but there is lots of homework we have to do before that. So right now users can only ask questions to the beauties, and they will answer those questions through video.

6. Can you share your revenue model?

Jonathan: The easiest answer is ads. But ads can only [work if] we hit certain pageviews. Currently we focus on paid offline events selling seminars. Since we focus on basic character-building seminars, we had lots of good feedback from our attendees.

7. Does Updaterus have any investors?

Jonathan: Updaterus does not have any investors. Right now is self funded by my partners who are also experienced in the online and media industry. They choose to remain anonymous.

8. Can you name a few of your competitors? What makes you different from them?

Jonathan: Bachelora.com, Talkmen.com. What makes us different from them is we focus on self-improvement to make a better man. Instead of deploying lots of channels – for example music or movie reviews – our channels are very unique that focus on tips and knowledge. Our value proposition for the user is, after users read our content, they will learn something new that can cause them to be more appealing, smarter, and also charming.

9. Any upcoming plans you can share with us?

Jonathan: Yes. We will be lots of offline activities that focus on character seminars, offline campaigns, and also online campaign in November. But we can’t say much more about these quite yet!

Clozette partners Indonesia’s Fashion Daily Network to launch fashion social network Clozette Daily

Singapore startup Clozette announced yesterday that it has partnered with Indonesia’s Fashion Daily Network to launch a localized version of its fashion social network, Clozette Daily.

Fashion Daily Network is the largest female online community in Indonesia at over 47,000 members.

Clozette says that its latest offering will be the first fashion social network in Indonesia to integrate social networking with e-commerce. Users can create they own online closet and purchase items through Clozette’s third-party e-commerce partners.

The site looks similar to Clozette’s main site, sharing the same features. But the localization was clear to see. It features several Indonesian online retailers like Moporie and Closet Quickie, as well as a ‘Hijab of the Day’ page.

The fashion social network has been rapidly expanding regionally of late. It launched its Japanese platform on 15th December last year in partnership with Glam Media.

Clozette then followed that up by raising a Series A round of USD 1.9M led by Seed Ventures IV in May 2012, a USD 16.4M venture fund under the Singapore National Research Foundation’s Early Stage Venture Funding Scheme managed by Walden International. Adding that to a USD 1.19M seed round, this brings the total investment to USD 3.09M.

In terms of traction, Clozette had 100,000 beauty and fashion items shared by users from 100 countries as of May 2012. And in December 2011, it was attracting 85,000 unique monthly visitors.

Its founder, Roger Yuen, has serious entrepreneurial and management chops. Before starting Clozette in July 2010, he started IT security company e-Cop with Eddie Chau, another established entrepreneur. He then became an angel investor and board member of Brandtology, which was acquired by Media Monitors.

MagiXcan Promises to Make Computers 10X Faster, or More

A rise in megapixel count in a camera may not necessarily result in a better photo, but one thing it surely implies is a bigger file, and hence a longer time to open it on a typical computer. CPU speeds, unlike digital photo sizes, have not been getting appreciably faster over the years. Moore’s Law states that the transistor count on chips will double every couple of years–and this has certainly happened, explaining why the pixel count of your pictures has increased so dramatically. On the other hand, CPUs have hit a clock frequency ceiling with manufacturers unable to crank up clock speeds in the way they have in the past, mainly because higher speeds means increased power consumption resulting in thermal limitations.

This has resulted in larger photos taking longer to show up on your computer screen. Arun Sagar has invented a new technology called MagiXcan, that can decode media files, like digital photos, extremely fast using parallel processing. This technology is showcased in a free, downloadable tool called Aros Magic Viewer, by a Washington-based company called Aros Magic.

Based out of Washington, Arun has filed a patent for this parallel-processing technology. He has been creating software since 1986 ranging from fun toys and utilities to high-speed servers used at major companies that he’s worked for in his career.

In addition to superfast viewing speeds, Aros Magix Viewer 3.0 beta also gives you the ability to easily and swiftly connect your photos to a few online photo services, or Tweet/Facebook them. There is a small floating pane on the right that lets you browse through directories on your computer and then through photos in an album. The UX of the tool is nothing extraordinary, but I realized that’s not what it is for, from the little experiment I conducted.

The experiment

I downloaded the tool, currently in beta and only for Windows, and ran a few tests to ensure it does what it says. With an attempt to get a large photo, I tried shooting RAW, but a 16MP RAW image from my D5100 was only 23 MB. Also, since the tool only supports JPG images as of now, I compressed it to find only 5.5 MB left. I wanted a bigger image to better compare load times, and hunted down this panorama of Lake Tahoe I clicked one chilly morning at King’s Beach, California, earlier this year:

The original image is 14,695 pixels by 3,470 pixels (48 MP), and uses up a whopping 49 MB on the hard disk. It has been scaled 23:1 to fit here. The actual size of the picture can be imagined from the following small 1:1 cross section of the red rectangle in the above image:

I tested it on a Windows XP and an Ubuntu 10.04 computers, the configurations of which were:

-Ubuntu 10.04 running on Quad Core Intel Core i5-2540M CPU @ 2.60GHz each, 8 GB RAM
-Windows XP SP3 on Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 CPU @ 2.53 GHz each, 4 GB RAM

Time taken to load the image on various software was as follows (average of 5 times):

Cores and processing

A general trend in processor clock speeds, screen display resolutions, and photo sizes over the past two decades:

1990: 0.05GHz CPU, 0.5MP display, 0.5MP photos.
2000: 2GHz CPU, 2MP display, 2MP photos.
2010: 4GHz CPU, 3MP display, 16MP photos.

In my little experiment above, I was surprised to find a dual core Windows XP perform better than a Quad Core Ubuntu machine for the same file.

The number of cores in a computer doesn’t necessarily mean better performance, as Sagar explains:

Unfortunately, when it comes to the using of many cores with parallel algorithms, we run into Amdahl’s Law. This roughly says that there are limits to how fast you can process data if certain parts of it are serial. Because clock speeds have languished and photo (and other media) files are largely decompressed sequentially, we have reached a limit in terms of how fast we can decompress, i.e. consume, them. Even if we had 32 MP displays available today, our present (and foreseeable) CPUs simply wouldn’t be able to decompress and feed images of that size to those displays fast enough, because conventional methods aren’t fast enough. The increased core counts that are available these days are of no help in this situation (and wouldn’t be even if we had 100-core CPUs).

The Road ahead

MagiXcan is currently implemented for JPEG photo viewing speedup on Microsoft Windows only. MagiXcan needs to be implemented for other file formats – photos, documents, audio, video, etc. It also needs to be ported to MacOS and Android. It needs to be deep inside an operating system for it to yield maximum performance. The more formats magiXcan supports, the faster your computer will become. Arun Sagar is trying to crowdfund further development via this Indiegogo project.

MagiXcan is a significant breakthrough, and it is not just sheer speed that is revolutionized. Arun postulates:

Say we have a 100-core machine and have effectively achieved all the speed improvement we care for. Then this capacity for faster processing can be traded off against energy consumption. So instead of processing photos 100X faster on this 100-core machine, we could process them merely 10X faster, but at the same time using up only a tenth of the original power required – by lowering the clock frequency by the same factor.

Faster photo viewing is only the tip of the iceberg. Ultimately magiXcan is the technology that may enable your n-core computer to run n-fold faster for all the stuff that really matters than it currently does. If you are like most consumers, the single most taxing task your CPU does is digital media processing, which is fundamentally just decompression. A lot of the rest of the time your CPU is just idling. Thus, decompressing data n-times faster is, practically speaking, the same as speeding up your machine n-fold.

Less energy consumption directly translates into longer battery life (or smaller, thus less polluting, batteries). If this technology can be ported to mobile devices, phones and tablets running for a week on a single charge wouldn’t be imaginary.

Dish TV adds 477k new subscribers in second quarter

Dish TV India Limited (Dishtv) has announced its second quarter fiscal 2013 unaudited standalone operating revenues of Rs. 5,336 million, recording 10.1% growth over the corresponding period last fiscal. Dish TV added 477 thousand new subscribers in the quarter ended September 30, 2012 achieving a total of 13.9 million gross and 10.0 million net subscribers at the end of the period.

Total standalone operating revenues for the second quarter stood at Rs. 5,336 million, recording a growth of 10.1% as compared to the corresponding period last fiscal. EBITDA of Rs. 1,557 million registered a significant 18.3% increase over the corresponding quarter last fiscal. EBITDA margin for the quarter stood at 29.2%.

India Realizing its Potential as Mega Mobile Market, 4th in Android Downloads Worldwide

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced today that Android developers in India can now sell paid applications, in-app items, and subscriptions on the Google Play platform. Developers can collect payments on a monthly basis via their bank accounts.

This follows news yesterday that Android smartphone users in India would be able to buy apps in Indian Rupees after October 25.

Google also revealed some incredible figures about Android adoption in the Indian market, most notably that India is now the fourth largest market in the world in terms of downloads, with device activations up 400 percent in the last year. We understand that Japan and Korea are second and third respectively in terms of downloads, and (while it hasn’t been announced) presumably the US is number one.

Analyst Chetan Sharma noted back in May that while India has the world’s second largest total of mobile subscribers (behind China), it isn’t even in the top ten in data revenue or data usage. So its encouraging to hear this news from Google that things finally look to be picking up on the smartphone side.

The 2012 data we received from Tapjoy a few weeks back indicated that India is one of the Asian countries which leans far more in favor of Android than iOS.

Looking at Google’s ‘Our Mobile Planet’ survey, we can also see that Indian smartphone users look to be more passionate about their handsets than some other countries, with 49 percent of those surveyed saying they would prefer to give up their TV than their smartphone.

E-publishing platforms, Thailand’s Ookbee and Indonesia’s SCOOP, partner up for regional expansion

They have a combined collection of 600 regional magazine titles and daily newspapers. They reach over 4 million devices, and deliver over 6 million digital publications a year.

Now imagine what would happen if Ookbee of Thailand and SCOOP of Indonesia partner up. That’s exactly what they did, announcing couple of days ago a strategic tie-up in a press release.

Both are already impressive in their home countries. Ookbee has partnered with Thailand’s largest telco AI and the country’s leading bookstore B2S. It also received an investment of USD2M from Shin Corporation at a USD8M valuation, and was reportedly growing at 5,000 users a day.

SCOOP, meanwhile, has gotten sizable traction on its apps. It hit 250k users on iOS and 30k to 50k users on Android with a mostly Indonesian user base.  It raised USD 0.77M from Gobi Partners and Mitsui Global Investment last year, and is looking at expanding to Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

The collaboration could make them dominant regional players. It will accelerate growth through knowledge sharing, securing deals from bigger publishers, and cross-marketing their products. Foreign publishers and device manufacturers could benefit too: it’ll be easier for them to get visibility through the combined reach of both platforms.

“Partnering together will make Ookbee/SCOOP the biggest newsstand and e-book store platform in the SEA region. I believe this will create a synergy in so many ways in order to fulfill our visions of offering the best services for our users,” said Ookbee CEO Natavudh Pungcharoenpong.

Willson Cuaca, CEO of Apps Foundry, the company behind SCOOP, said that he compared notes with Ookbee and realized that firstly, both platforms are moving in the same direction. Second, Southeast Asia is made up of diverse markets.

So, to get over the hump of going regional in a fractious environment, it makes sense to partner up. Competition between both is inevitable, but knowledge sharing and cross-marketing could bolster both sides. This results in better products and improved services for customers.

It could also give them an edge over other competitors in the region. SingTel, for instance, has jumped into the fray with Skoob. Another Singapore corporation, MediaCorp, has launched ilovebooks.com. Thailand also has its own offering, Asiabooks, a traditional book business which recently ventured into digital publications. And of course, no one can overlook Apple and its Newsstand app.

The e-publishing industry is expected to see tremendous growth in the coming years as consumers migrate to mobile devices. According to Pricewaterhouse Coopers, e-book spending in Asia-Pacific is expected to hit USD2.26B by 2016. That’s up from USD1.27B in 2012.

Why isn’t there a Mark Zuckerberg in China?

The piece originally appears on LinkedIn, we reproduced it here under Kaifu Lee’s authorization. Kaifu is the founder of Chinese incubator Innovation Works , he also served as Google and Microsoft VP.

More specifically, why are there hardly any twenty-year-old wunderkind entrepreneurs in China?

I pulled the last 10 China IT IPOs in the US, and found that the founders were 33 when they started their companies.  At Innovation Works, the average entrepreneur age is also 33.  We all know the Y Combinator or Ron Conway are funding younger and younger entrepreneurs in the Valley.  What happened in China?

There are several major reasons why top Chinese entrepreneurs are 10 years older than their counterparts in the Silicon Valley:

  1. Chinese education tends to be better for depth than breadth.  In other words, when you graduate as a software engineer, you may have very strong fundamentals in math and engineering, but you don’t get as much exposure to user experience, communications, product design, business acumen, team-work, etc. as you would in a typical US university.  Moreover, Chinese schools focus more on tests from textbooks, while American schools care more about learning-by-doing.  In short, the American education better prepares a student to be an entrepreneur.
  2. The top American young entrepreneurs tend to be rebellious and spontaneous — Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry/Sergey, and Mark Zuckerberg all dropped out of school because they wanted to follow their heart and realize their dream.  But in China, the environment, culture, and education system care more about discipline, harmony, and conformity.  All students follow similar curriculum, and take standardized tests.  Grades are considered the primary measure of intelligence and success.  As a result, a Jobs-like rebel in China is much more likely to be shamed into oblivion, stifled into submission, or rejected into the dark side.
  3. The Chinese Internet market is a very tough environment, described by some as a gladiatorial fight to the death.  One company has registered a competitor’s domain name and built an identical service to fool users; companies de-install each other’s software and change user selections without informing the user; weibo (Chinese twitter) is used as a battleground for name-calling and rumor-mongering; lawsuits and arrests are common competitive escalations.  This is too dangerous a “playground” for a young CEO who hasn’t had ten years of experience and a dozen scars from virtual duels.

So in China, VCs generally prefer the thirty-something entrepreneur who are more mature, experienced, and adept at execution.  They are more resilient and dependable, but perhaps less innovative and passionate.  They desire success, but may not “think different”. They are a different breed of entrepreneurs from the Silicon boys.

Microsoft Launches Online Store in China, Ready to Ship Surface Tablets

China is not short of online shopping options – and now there’s one more, with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) today unveiling an official online store for Chinese fans of Windows products. The Microsoft Store for China is now live (see here) and has also put an official local price on the upcoming Surface tablet line-up, which can be booked right now.

The 32GB Windows RT Surface tablet with no smart keyboard cover starts at 3688 RMB (US$586), goes up to 4488 RMB ($713) with the cover, or the 64GB model is 5,288 RMB ($841). There’s no 16GB version because, as Daring Fireball points out, Windows RT is still a lot heftier than iOS.

The new Microsoft Store for China also sells a bunch of Microsoft Office packages – but, for the moment, nothing else. Yes, there’s no sign yet of pre-ordering Windows 8. That’s in contrast to most other official MS stores around the world, which also sell versions of Windows, Xboxes, and various accessories.

The Chinese tech blog WPDang points out that the new China online store brings brings Microsoft’s total of such e-commerce sites up to 230 markets around the world.

GREE Releases Monster Quest, New iOS Game from Funzio Team

GREE’s (TYO:3632) US studio has just announced a new title, as Monster Quest has just dropped for iPhone and iPad. The game is free to play, and lets players collect, train, and fuse monsters in order to create a monster empire.

Monsters represent eight elements, with each type possessing certain characteristics that will help them in battle. But in addition to this battle element players can also build habitats as well, sort of as you would in a farming or city-building game. The graphics look really sharp (it has retina support), and the variety of missions (over 300) should provide lots of opportunity to explore.
