China’s Online Retailers Tap Convenience Stores for Package Pick-Ups

Although Chinese consumers are hot for the nation’s e-commerce sites – with one in seven urbanites shopping online each month – it can be a pain actually picking up your parcels. When the courier companies are working, you’re at the office. And although the courier companies will deliver stuff to your office, you’ll then have to carry it all the way home. And so two of China’s top online malls for brands, Alibaba’s Tmall, and Tencent’s QQ Buy, are tapping some convenience store chains to allow package pick-ups.

The Tmall tie-up launches today and initially covers just nine brick-and-mortar retail chains across five cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Jiaxing, Hangzhou, and Wuhan. But that amounts to 580 individual stores (like C-Store, pictured) as potential collection points. It’ll allow city dwellers to collect their online purchases at their convenience, 24 hours a day. The ideal picture is that your neighborhood store will support the scheme, so you can pick up your package at the same time you stock up on milk.

The scheme will soon be expanded to southern China’s Guangdong province so that there’ll be a total of 1,300 supporting stores across five provinces by next month – just in time for China’s hottest online sales day on ‘singles day’ – November 11th.

Tencent’s (HKG:0700) QQ Buy, a similar online mall to Tmall, started the same thing last month – but only in Hong Kong. It was a way for China’s biggest web company to take its online shopping platform into a new market, and a range of retail partnerships in Hong Kong mean that 1,200 stores are covered in just that once city.

Report: Nearly half of Indian Internet users will access the web only using mobile devices by 2015

About 40-50 % of Indian Internet users will access the web only on mobile phones by 2015,  says a new survey report. Mobile internet use through feature phones and smartphones is already more widespread than PC and laptop penetration, said the survey based on 4500 responses gathered by the Boston Consulting Group’s Center for Consumer and Customer Insight.

“In tier 4 areas, for example, the penetration of mobile Internet usage is 15 percent, not so different from the 20 percent mobile-usage penetration in metro areas. For PC- and laptop-based Internet usage, penetration is only 9 percent in tier 4 areas, versus 25 percent in metros,” the survey said.

According to BCG, nearly 60 percent (as measured in aggregate Internet hours consumers report they consume) already lies outside the largest cities, and it is the midtier towns that will drive growth.

For 2015, we project a four-fold growth in Internet hours, with nearly 40 percent of demand coming from tier 4 towns and rural areas; 22 percent coming from tier 1, 2, and 3 cities; and about 38 percent coming from metro areas, the report said.

Other highlights

India is where China was in 2006 in terms of penetration. China’s penetration rate is now about 40 percent, and its ecosystem has really burgeoned.

  • Out of four segments the consulting group divided the respondents into, the “trendsetters,” or young, affluent, and tech savvy who account for 13 % of the sample spend 54 hours a month online. They are just as likely to be found in smaller cities as in larger ones.
  • “Reluctant adopters,” 22 percent of the sample, are older and are tech dependent without being tech savvy.
  • “Smart shoppers,” 32 percent of the sample, are tech savvy but price constrained. They tend to be students or people with lower income levels.
  • The “tech indifferents,” 33 percent of our sample, are older, late adopters. They started using the Internet because it came into their homes for their children or because they wanted to keep in touch with friends and family.

Students: Wanna learn code? Apply for TreeHouse’ $6mn scholarship

Silicon Valley based TreeHouse is an online platform to learn code/enhance one’s skillsets and the company recently announced a global $6mn scholarship program where in 5,000 students globally will be chosen for TreeHouse ‘Gold Account Scholarship’ (which is $49/month).

TreeHouse hosts online courses on how to design and develop for the web and iOS/Android platforms; and scholarship winners will have free access to TreeHouse courses for two years (application form link). You must be a current student or graduated within the past year to apply for the scholarship.

Treehouse

Treehouse

We asked TreeHouse founder, Ryan Carson more details regarding the scholarship and importantly, the future of education:

What’s the big vision behind the $6mn contest?

Ryan Carson: We want to discourage people from going into debt at a university, in order to earn a technology degree that will immediately be out of date. Our hope is that we can encourage some students to consider learning online, at a much more affordable price.
Learning online also allows them to keep their skills continually up to date.

How will you select winners (criteria)?

Ryan Carson: All applicants need to verify their student status. We then pick on a first-come-first-serve basis.

What do you think is the future of education? Do you define education as a set of skill sets (learn <iOs/Android programming>)?

Ryan Carson: In technology we feel that skills are more important than degrees. Employers are looking to hire people with specific skills like Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, etc. Earning a Computer Science degree, doesn’t mean you have those skills. Learning through Treehouse does give you those specific skills, and then you can keep them up to date as the technology changes, by watching new videos that we release on Treehouse.

3. How does TreeHouse recruit teachers? Why not play a platform approach to education (i.e. enable anyone with a skill set to teach)?

Ryan Carson: We look for experts who are great at teaching on camera. This is a very rare skill and it’s hard to find great teachers. We think it’s important to hire full-time Teachers at Treehouse, instead of crowd-source our curriculum. This is because students need a consistent learning experience, from someone they can trust. Allowing anyone to teach on the Treehouse platform would undermine that trust and students couldn’t be sure they were being taught the most current and correct skills.

If you are a student and interested in learning more about web/app development and design, apply for the scholarship.

Shit Happens. Let’s Clean it up

toilet-brush

It’s not easy to be an entrepreneur. And no one can portray the level of difficulty in words either. It’s a huge mountain that you climb. When things are rosy, people are happy. The real test is when shit happens, and it usually does happen, because an entrepreneurs usually has to take on multiple roles. A good friend told me:

You are running business that comes with paperwork, finance, auditing, book-keeping, investor relations, communications, team building, a business model, product… [The list goes on…]

That’s a lot of stuff and I don’t think anyone can claim to be able to ace every role. The truth is, we all have flaws. But that shouldn’t be an excuse.

Most of the entrepreneurs I know are very young, most of them fresh grads. And the old generals would likely wonder what the hell do they know about business anyway. They are right most of time. But ignorance is bliss too. Young folks usually do not understand the risk and challenge, and maybe that’s why they have the courage to be entrepreneurs. Along the way they will surely make mistakes and hopefully are able to turn things right when shit happens before their bank balance hits $0 and lands them in the dead-pool.

But whether you’re young or old entrepreneurs, shit always happens. Always. The entrepreneur who cleans it up fast will have a better chance at winning. So if shit happens, don’t give in. Grab a brush and clean it up. Sparkling clean.

Gaopeng to Buy 24Quan?

The Berjaya Corporation, an investor of Beijing-based group buying service 24Quan was reportedly in talks with Beijing Wangluotianxia Life Technology Company about a potential sell of 24quan. Wangluotianxia was formed by the merger of Gaopeng (Groupon China) and FTuan in this June, both received investments from Tencent.

Du Yinan, founder and CEO of 24Quan wasn’t involved in the sell talk though.

The troubled 24Quan announced several days ago on its website to close business for an indefinite time as a way to protest Berjaya secretly transferring money out of 24Quan’s bank accounts. The investor-founder contradiction eventually led to the potential sell.

Lin Ning, CEO of Wangluotianxia said that Berjaya actively approached the company in an aim to forge a deal. The company is now evaluating the acquiring possibility on fronts like user base,  local business partnership and debt.

Foursquare to Check into Philippines this December at #4SQHackPH

Foursquare is now hacking into (or checking into?) Philippines this December with the all-day-long mobile application hackathon Foursquare Hackday Philippines, co-organized by Smart DevNet & WebGeek, both are programmers’ community in Philippines.

The event, charges PhP 1000 for one ticket or 200 for early bird discount starts on Oct.29, is to be held at Sadoce, 12/F Smart Tower, Ayala, Makati City on December 1.

Paul Pajo, developer Evangelist at SMART Communications said that one of the reasons they host such an event is because once an app was launched, no one ever remembers or cares who the developers are, and they want to highlight the fact that developers are the ones who actually do the dirty work to produce these apps.

  • Form a two-man or a three-man team
  • 9 hours to develop a mobile app
  • programming languages, application frameworks, and development tools is up to everyone’s choices

Chinese Group Buying Market Shrinking Dramatically

Chinese group buying service aggregator Tuan800 released a latest report, indicating that by the end of September Chinese group-buying sites shrank to 2919, dropped 42% yoy. The message can be translated into the fact that 5.9 Chinese group buy sites either shut down or pivoted to other ideas every day. 24Quan which use to be in the Top 10 army just announced to close business temporarily due to a investor-founder contradiction.

It “seems” that group buying is becoming a promising market as consumers can get discounts anytime anywhere with smart phone at hand. It’s estimated that the whole Chinese O2O market will reach 98.68 billion, increased by 75.5% yoy. As the vanguard in O2O business, group buying should have grasped the opportunity and stepped itself up, but the sobering reality is that only 10 out of the remaining 2919 players offer mobile clients, accounting for only 0.3% of the whole.

An industry insider once said that it’s not likely that consumers installed more than 1 group buying app into their smart phones, so the coverage of mobile clients are of most importance. Adding an app to these group buying sites’ consumer reach points would help them get more exposure among potential users. After nearly two years of wild growing, Chinese group buying services now all look like each other with little differentiation, we’re expect to see an ongoing consolidation in the market till only about 10 left.

The Unique Business Model of YY Music

Investors who focus on China TMT startup, don’t give yourself a hard time if it’s the first time you heard of a company dubbed YY Inc. “is filing with SEC to go public” on TechNode couple days ago. Even for many Chinese locals, the China southern Guangzhou-based company could catch too much of their attention before.

Now with the surprising IPO prospectus, many finally jumped to the startup to dig out what it is really up to. One interesting finding, is that though few Chinese music-related startup are making money given problems in record industry like piracy, YY’s music business seems to be doing well with stunning revenue and growth.

In the first half of 2012, YY’s music business reached RMB 33.76m(Q1) and RMB 58.96m(Q2) in revenue respectively. When many are complaining about Chinese users just won’t pay, YY Music has already 26.57million monthly active users while 355,000 out of them are paying (data: as of Sep 31th, 2012).

Apart from the premium users and some related value-added services, YY Music also sells virtual items on its platform. Users can purchase items like roses and give away them to performers they love and the performers then can actually cash in on these roses. Some grassroots musicians are very popular among the YY community. So the platform will even hold mini concerts or campaigns for them through which they share profits.

We once wrote that The No.1 Rule for music startups is not to tell people you are funded. So true and recently some insiders pointed that the business model of YY music may have involved some copyright infringement. “If the songs that have been performed by users are not original, whose copyright is owned by other musicians, the profits that are derived should be distributed to the copyright owner. It is true that many owners now are unaware of their IP being infringed, but this behavior still can be called plagiarism,” said one insider.

Wang Bin, a lawyer also said that if YY music is profiting in this way without any agreement with copyright owners, this is illegal. However voice from the music industry sounds different, producer Zhong Sheng thought that YY Music makes pop music available to every one and is also a good publicizing channel. As to the business model, he said that YY Music could help develop users’ consuming habits, which is unique among peers.

It is also said that YY Music has been signing agreements with record industries to obtain copyrighted contents, a move to clear hurdles beforehand.

With its launch in  Asia, the company aims to  target the large number of small and medium enterprises and 1 million designers willing to work online in the continent, however it has priority to find new customers needing design services in the region . Currently,  50% of the  DesignCrowd’s top 20 designers come from the region and India is DesignCrowd’s fourth largest source of users after the US, UK and Australia. Earlier this year, DesignCrowd had rolled out its services in Canada and the UK.

Crowdsourcing is relatively a new term to India , especially for creative or design services. Baidu Expects Ad Revenue to Rise to $3.18 Billion by End of 2012

Despite a still fragile economy, China’s top search engine Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) believes it’ll see a strong rise in ad revenues in 2012. Baidu’s VP, Wang Zhan, said publicly this week that he expects in excess of RMB 20 billion (US$3.18 billion) in online advertising sales by the end of 2012 – which would be way up from 2011’s total of RMB 14 billion ($2.2 billion).

Baidu leads the pack in China with its ad platform. At the end of 2011, data from Analysys International says that Baidu has the greatest market share in the online ad sector in China, at 30.5 percent of the industry’s revenue. E-tailer Alibaba is second with 17.4 percent, and Google’s remains third despite a shrinking proportion of the market:

Baidu’s share of the market grew very slightly from 2010 Q4 to the end of 2011. Mr. Wang’s confident predictions suggest the company is looking to stretch its lead again in 2012.

But not everything is going Baidu’s way this year, with a major new search engine emerging in the form of Qihoo’s 360 Search. The software maker looks to have taken some market share from Baidu as well as Google. However, for the moment, Qihoo doesn’t have an online ads platform.
