E-commerce company Homeshop18 has launched a ‘Virtual shopping wall’ at the domestic terminal of Delhi International Airport. The ‘Scan N Shop’ wall, touted as India’s first virtual shopping wall, will sell premium goods to customers.
An order can be placed by scanning the QR code of an item shown on the wall. Orders can also be placed by calling the Network18 owned eCommerce company’s call centers.
While some of us feel that this so called virtual shopping wall is a waste of expensive real estate and technology, proponents contend that this is innovative use of tech (by the way, how many of us are using QR readers?). The jury is out on that but no surprise that Homeshope18 is doing its bit to seem different. After all, they have a game changing Nasdaq IPO to pull off.
Retailers across the world are trying different solutions to improve sales. Brick and mortar retailers, like Walmart, have been trying to play catch up with online retailer Walmart as shoppers move online.
Walmart had launched a virtual toy store in Canada last year. In Korea, the “world’s first” Virtual Shopping Store was launched last year. The shelves are replaced by digital displays from where users can select desired items by touching the screen.
Other services have also been experimenting with virtual solutions and augmented reality. For instance, Hyderabad based eHealth Access has launched Virtual Medical Kiosk – which enables patient-doctor consultation in a secure environment.
