Chinese mobile manufacturer Huawei is set to conquer the high-end smartphone market with an 8-core smartphone processor within the second half of 2013.
The recently-concluded CES 2013 in Las Vegas had been full of surprises. One such surprise is Chinese company Huawei putting up stakes in the high end smartphone market. Richard Yu, Huawei consumer business group CEO, said that they will be releasing an eight core processor in the second half of 2013. The speculation is that the new processor will be based on the ARM Cortex-15. It could be the much touted HiSilicon K3V3 or a variant of it. It would be manufactured by Taiwanese firm TSMC, which also manufactures most of Huawei’s smartphone chips.
Huawei is trying to gain ground in the U.S. market, where the brand is unfortunately mostly known for its inexpensive, low-end devices. In the past year, the company had been under criticism, along with compatriot ZTE, for allegedly incorporating back-doors in its telecommunications equipment, which may allow spying. The Chinese deny this allegation, though, and continue to be suppliers of networking equipment to the world’s major telecommunications companies.
More cores, more fun?
The octa-core ARM Cortex-15 uses a big-LITTLE architecture which makes use of a mix of high-powered and low-energy processors. The eight cores are not all equal. Four of the on-chip processors are high-powered for processor-intensive computing, while the other four cores are low-powered energy-efficient chips which are used for regular workload. For graphical applications, the high-end chips are used. Meanwhile, for regular computing, the low-end chips are used. This extends battery life, and at the same time delivers power whenever computing intensive apps are running.
Yu also mentioned that they will be announcing the release of a new series P smartphone which will be 6.45-mm thin enclosed in a metallic body. Currently, the world’s slimmest smartphone is the Alcatel One-Touch Idol Extra which is 6.45-mm thick.
More noted for its B2B business with telecommunications equipments, Huawei has pushed its CES 2013 presence in order to become better-associated with consumer electronics. This time, instead of its Windows 8 phone offerings it announced last year, it introduced the Ascend Mate. Running on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and Huawei’s proprietary Emotion UI, the 9.9-mm thin device boasts a 6.1 inch high-definition 241 ppi Gorilla Glass screen.
The smartphone uses a 1.5GHz quad-core Huawei Hisilicon processor which is based on the ARM Cortex-9. It also has 2GB RAM and 8GB of built-in storage. It also has a two cameras, a 1megapixel HD front facing and an 8 megapixel rear-facing HDR camera. Huawei says that it will have 22 hours of talk time, 14 hours of web surfing time, and 10 hours of video playback.
Best smartphone in the market?
Compared to offerings from Samsung and Apple, Yu said that the Ascend Mate is the best smartphone. Huawei also introduced the Ascend D2, which is a smaller version (5 inch screen) of the Ascend Mate.
The Ascend Mate will be on the market in China starting February, and will be released to the world market the following month. Details about the 6.45mm thin Huawei phone will be released next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Huawei on Tuesday introduced the Ascend W1, a Windows 8 smartphone, 10.15 mm thin with a 4-inch IPS LCD 480 x 800 touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and Adreno 305 GPU. It has a 470 hours of standby time, considered the best in its class. It will be available in China and Russia starting this month, with rollouts in the USA, the Middle East, Western Europe and other countries to follow.
